THEN

Still not ours

'Then'
Isla de Muerte

"I'm alive?"

Captain Henry Barbossa grunted and sat straight up both hands flying to the killing wound above his heart.
His pale blue eyes flashed around the dim cavern, the last things he rememberd were, Jack Sparrow shooting him with the shot he had saved for ten years, and that boy lifting the curse, and himself feeling so cold. He thought he remembered dropping the apple he'd brought with him. He had so looked forward to eating it, to sinking his teeth into it's crisp yellow flesh.

"How?" A soft chitter from the left caught his attention. "Jack?" A tiny, furry, tailed creature jumped off a pile of stolen furniture and laned beside it's master.

"That's a good monkey." Barbossa reached out and patted the mammal on it's head. It grinned, and picking a shiny yellow coin up from the swag the pirate had laned on when he died, handed it to him. The yellow coin with a grinning skull Barbossa had hoped never to see again, yet was very happy to have in his long nailed hand.

AZTEC GOLD. One of 882 cursed pieces taken from a stone chest high atop the tallest pile of rock and treasure. His thin lips pulled tight across stained teeth when he smiled the coldest smile ever seen by Jack-the-monkey, "This is interestin'!" he muttered before throwing his head back laughing hard.

The monkey screamed and jumped up and down, pearl necklaces draped over it's little body.

THEN The Black Pearl

Captain Jack Sparrow stood high atop the black mast, not inside the crow's nest, but several feet away, balanced on the main boom.
The same wind that filled the mainsails also whipped black hair about his bronzed face. Dark eyes gleefully took in the horizon- he loved the way the sky melded into the sea, fading into each other until he did not know where one started and the other ended. In the horizon, there was no end to either, no beginning; it just was.

A sound caught his ears and Jack looked down, sharp eyes taking in his crew. A sudden, sharp nod and Jack grabbed a nearby rope. He stepped off into the air, he slid all the way down to the main deck. He hit harder then he intended, and fell forward, and-feet over head- rolled expertly and was back on his feet in an elegant move that appeared deliberate.
Hat still firmly on his head, he turned to face Mr. Gibbs

"Well, Mr. Gibbs?" Jack laid an elbow nonchalantly on the wheel that steered the giant vessel.

"Cap'n, ya sure this is a wise idea? Ah mean, goin' back to the Isla de la Muerta?" Gibbs tipped his rum bottle to his lips before tucking it away again.

"O'course it is, Gibbs. All that swag, just sittin' there, all by its lonesome with nuthin' but jewals for company. And nobody knowin' the way but us." Jack smirked at his old friend.

"An' tha' other crew!" Anamarie's voice was sharp as she interrupted.

"Ahh, but" Jack leaned close, swaying away and back with the rolling of the deck, "They are either dead or locked up. It's perfectly safe, savvy?"

"As you say, Cap'n" Gibbs nodded. "As you say."

The black Pearl anchored in a close cove and the crew rowed to the secret cave to plunder the treasure inside.

Watching from the darkness, Barbossa gripped the cursed coin tightly in his hand and watched the pirates steal the swag he and his men had spent ten years building. He saw them avoid the large stone Aztec chest. "Shhh, Jack," he soothed the monkey and stepped away, back into the shadows. "I've got a plan."
