CHAPTER 4: Suffering and Treasure

Fells stepped into the cabin, his eyes going from the restless form of his Captain to the ship surgeon, Makins. The young man had been with the Midnight Starr crew for 2 years, his expertise was well known among the pirate crew, all of them having to use his skills at one time or another. "How is she?"

"She got hit in the side. That one's no problem, just a shallow cut. It's her shoulder that's what' worrin' me." Makins dropped to his haunches next to the bed, "She's been fevered for two days now, Fells. I've been hopin' that it won't fester."

"But?" Fells dropped to one knee, his worried eyes watching Ketain.

"It's festered." Makins laid a cool cloth on Ketain's forehead.

The pirate captain moaned at the touch, her skin giving off heat that even Fells could feel. "What do ye think we should do fer her?"

"Cauterize the wound. The heat will drive out the poisons."

Fells was silent for a while, then he nodded, "Do it." He looked at the surgeon, "What do we need to do?"

Makins outlined what he would need and the help he would require and in a short while everything was ready, a marlinspike was turning red-hot in the brazier, three former Starr crewmen waiting to help. Makins nodded, "Okay, lads, now fer the hard part." He motioned for the men to hold Ketain down, he reached for the marlinspike. "Hold her still as ye can, me lads." The surgeon pressed the red-hot metal against Ketain's shoulder.

Ketain reacted with a scream, her body arching up trying to get away from the pain. She screamed again, weaker this time, struggling to get away from the hard grip of the four men.

Makins removed the marlinspike, wincing slightly at the sight of blackened flesh. He nodded to the men, "You can let her go now. I'm finished."

The crewmen let their captain go and gratefully left the cabin just as Jack Sparrow burst in, "What in 'ell are ye doing to her?"

Makins turned to look at the other Captain, "Saving her life." He dropped the marlinspike on the floor, the heat from the tip still showing a faied ged g "O "Or perhaps ye'd like to bury her?"

Jack shook his head, his beaded hair jingling with the movement, "Nay, I've no wish to see her dead." He reached down and smoothed Ketain's hair back from her sweating face, then jerked it back as Ketain murmured a name. His eyes tightened slightly then he turned and stalked out of the cabin.

Makins looked at Fells with a raised eyebrow, "And who the hell is Jamie?"

"None of yer concern, that one. Just ye be seeing to the Cap'n." Fells nodded toward the mentioned lady, then turned and left the cabin.

Ketain opened her eyes and stared at the ceiling above her. Listening to the raucous calls of a crew outside she figured she must indeed be on the Black Pearl. Which meant she hadn't been dreaming, and she wasn't dead. The pirate lady tried to sit up but the movement jarred her arm. Biting her lip to forestall an outcry of pain she stopped moving. "Okay, I wasn't imagining getting shot either."

"No, ye weren't, lass." A familiar voice came from across the room, "Ye've had yer crew in a fair worry about ye, Ketain."

"Jack." Ketain turned her head to smile at the pirate captain. "Weren't ye worried bout me also? Or did ye rescue me out of the goodness of yer heart." She laughed, "Wait a second, yer heart is as black as midnight, it can't be good. Ye must be after something. Sorry, no ship to plunder from me. I lost mine, thanks to the British Navy. Unless it's me fevered body ye be after."

"First off, it’s CAPTAIN Sparrow to you, lass. And you mustn’t forget treasure, pillaging, thieving, singing, pleasuring,"

"And plundering your weasley black guts out?"

Jack grinned and saluted her with the rum bottle dangling in his hand, "Lass, ye be knowing me too well."

Ke
Ketain chuckled softly, "That I do, Jack." She glanced at the other pirate, "Ye got anything besides rum to drink on this floating barge?"

"Hey, the Pearl is not a barge!" Jack looked ready to throw something at her. "Behave yerself, lass, or I'll toss ye back to the British."

"Right." Ketain grinned, "Like ye'd ever do that."

"Keep insulting me ship, lass, and I might consider it, savvy?" Jack got up and started rummaging through one of the cabinets, "What's wrong with rum anyway?"

"I prefer brandy and you know it."

"Tea, and I've brought some soup also."

Both pirates turned at the sound of a new voice. Ketain smiled, "Makins."

"Cap'n." The surgeon set the tray on the table, then helped his captain sit up in bed. "How the shoulder be doing, Cap'n?"

"Hurts like hell, Makins." Ketain looked three shades whiter with the movement shifting her arm.

"Can ye eat left-handed? I need to check the wound." Makins moved the tray to Ketain's lap.

"Sure, as long as you stop poking me shoulder and making it hurt."

"Here this be help with that." Jack poured a heathly dollop of liquor in her tea, then with a grin added one to her soup.

Ketain glared at Jack, "That had better not be rum, ye pirate."

"Nope, it be fine french brandy. See?" Jack held up the bottle for her to read.

Ketain nodded aprovingly, "Quite fine brandy." She drank some of her tea, "Oh, make the verra fine."

The next few days Ketain regained her strength quickly. The fresh salt air helping, but the fact she was free helped also. This particular fine day had Ketain and Fells sitting on the poopdeck talking in low tones about what they were going to do about a ship when a cry was heard.

"Sails off starboard."

Jack let the wheel go as he grabbed the telescope. Will caught the wheel to prevent the ship from falling off the wind.

"What is it?" Will asked as he stared toward the sails.

"French merchantman, well down in the water." Jack grinned, sunlight flashing off his gold teeth, "Let's go huntin' lads!" He took over the wheel again, the Black Pearl heeling over and taking the new heading with a snap of her black sails. The ship leapt forward into the sea like a hunting hound coursing after a rabbit.

Ketain grabbed a telescope and watched the fast approaching merchantman, then suddenly started laughing.

Jack scowled at "W "What?"

"It seems yer reputation, or at least the Pearl's, is getting around. The Frenchies have run up a white flag." Ketain handed the scope to Jack, "At least ye save a few cannonballs today."

Jack looked through the scope, "It looks like ye be right. The crew be all on deck." He turned and shouted to his own crew as the Black Pearl closed on the merchantman. His crew jumped to lash the two ships together as Jack grinned at his lucrative captive. Then frowned as a shout was heard from the main deck.

"Parlay! I wish to parlay."

Ketain managed to keep from laughing at the crestfallen look on Jack's face as Will groaned and shook his own head.

Four crewmen brought a large well-dressed man up on the poopdeck. Ketain's eyes widened in recognition, she felt Fells start beside her and she grabbed his knee to keep him quiet. The two of them were off to the side where a casual glance wouldn't see them, and since the man was focused on Captain Sparrow at the moment he hadn't seen them.

Jack grinned, "So, ye want to parlay? I must be telling ye, parlay is only for other pirates, savvy. So why ye be demanding it?"

The man laughed, "I am a pirate, Captain."

Jack looked crestfallen, "What ye be wantin'?"

"Let the Corvallis go, free and clear, no chasing after her in two days. Ransom myself and the lad I brought on board. You'll get more money by the ransom than by plundering the Corvallis." The man spoke with a faint accent of the Scottish Highlands.

Across the deck Ketain was muttering to herself, "Damn it, Ian. Don't do anything foolish."

Jack crossed his arms, "Aye, and who would we be ransoming ye too now?"

"Captain Starr of the Midnight Starr. She knows my family, she knows how much my son and I are worth."

Will's eyes swung to look at Ketain but Jack spoke before the former blacksmith could say anything. "And what be yer name? I be needin' that when I speak to Captain Starr, savvy."

"Ian Malcolm, my son's name is Jonathan." Ian replied calmly, looking for the world like he captained this ship, instead of being a captive.

Jack tu to to Will, "Will, go tell the crew to turn the Frenchies loose." He motioned the younger man off with a nod of his beaded head. Nothing was said as the two ships were untied and drifting apart. With a snap of sails the Black Pearl headed off to the west.

Jwatcwatched Ian carefully, "How I be knowing that Captain Starr be wantin ye?"

Ian crossed his arms, "She will."

"But I have no way of knowing that, savvy?" Jack cocked his head, "I guess I should be asking her." He turned his head to look at Ketain, "W Cap Captain Starr, ye be wantin' to ransom this man and his son?"

Ketain nodded, "Aye, Jack. I be wantin' to ransom them both."

"That's interesting." Jack shrugged as Ian turned to look at Ketain.

"Hello, Ian." Ketain smiled, "What the blazes ye bing ing here?"

Ian crossed the deck in a few steps, "Ketain!" He engulfed the pirate lady in a hug, then pulled back when she yelped in pain. "Whappeappened to you?" He looked at her arm in its sling then glanced back at Jack.

"Nay, it weren't them. I got shot in the back by a redcoat. Jack and his crew rescued me." Ketain grinned, "Now, why you be here? Where's yer family?"

"Mary and the girls are dead. A sickness last fall. Only one of the boys made it. So we decided to sell the croft and come looking for you." Ian's eyes were saddened with his loss.

"The boys? Which one?" Ketain was suddenly afraid.

"Relax, Ketain, he's here. On the main deck." Ian grabbed her firmly by the shoulders, careful of her wound. "I'm sorry, I didna mean to scare you, lass."

Fells left and returned quickly with a lad of about fourteen following him. When the boy saw Ketain he fairly flew into her arms. Ketain wrapped her arm around him and soothed him, "Shh, I'm here."

Intrigued to say the least Jack sauntered over to the little group, Fells alerted Ketain to it with a slight touch and a soft, "Cap'n." She pulled back from the hug, but kept her good arm around the boy's shoulders.

"So, ye be ransoming them. What they be worth to ye, lass?"

"The treasure ship SaMariMaria de Francisco."

"Ketain!" Ian looked shocked, "You can't give that up for us."

"Hush, brother, I can and I will. There's enough left on the Red Dawn to keep us afloat for quite a while."

Jack was speechless, his jaw dropped to his chest, then he shook his head, "You were the one to take the Santa Maria de Francisco?"

"Aye." Ketain answered with a grin, "I took her two years ago."

ck sck shook his head, "Of all the cagey, wily, unscrupulous pirates I know, Ketain, ye take the prize. Savvy?"

Ketain grinned, "I know."

"So, this be yer brother, and the lad be his son. Fine looking lad, what are ye, fourteen or fifteen?"

Ian suddenly looked at the deck causing to to stare at him.

Ketain cleared her throat, "Actually, the lad be my son, Jack. Ian and his wife raised him for me. A pirates life isn't for a child." Shanceanced at Ian, "And Jamie's fourteen."

"So, this is Jamie?" Jack recognized the name.

Ketain glanced at Fells, who commented, "Ye called for the lad in yer fever, Cap'n." Ketain nodded in understanding. She watched Jack as he stared at her son. "Whatever is wrong, Jack?"

"That's Captain Jack to ye, lass. The boy reminds me of someone." The pirate captain looked puzzled, "But I can't say who."

"He looks like you, Jack." Will spoke up from behind Jack.

Jack turned to look at his first mate, "Me?"

Will nodded, "It's the eyes."

Jack got a little wild-eyed, "Ketain, the last time we spent any time together was about that long ago." He turned to stare at Jamie again, "He's not, is he?"

Ketain nodded, "Aye, he is, Jack. Jamie is my son, and yers."
