poor mai...this is for your paper clip biting self...

Hephaistion woke with immense pain in his abdomen, his vision was blurry and he heard voices in the room. He reached out for nothing in particular and a hand grabbed onto his and held it tightly.

“Alexander,” he whispered softly.

The person who held Hephaistion’s hand so tightly pressed their lips against his.

“Alexander is still away Hephaistion,” Olympias replied softly.

“When will he be back,” he questioned weakly.

“When he is able to.”

“How are my babies?”

“Just rest Hephaistion, just rest.”

Hephaistion obeyed unwillingly, he was too exhausted.

****************************~

Olympias left Hephaistion to rest and went to see Glaulcos to ask him on the progress of her grandchildren. She slowly opened the door to not wake the babies and saw Glaulcos tending to them. They slept silently as Glaulcos did his work.

‘My gods, they are so tiny, so weak, may the fates be on their side,’ she thought to herself while inching closer towards the doctor and her grandchildren.

“How are do they fair Glaulcos,” she questioned softly to not wake the babies.

Glaulcos placed a hand to his brow, “I do not know my Queen, their temperatures rise and fall and they do not take my medicine well.”

“What do you mean they don’t take your medicine well? Give them something that will make them well!”

“My queen, they will not drink anything, not even the wet nurse’s milk! They spit out everything I give them to make them well. If things continue this way they will not see the light of tomorrow my queen. It’s been two days,” he said sadly.

Olympias’ eyes lit up, “And what of Hephaistion? What of his milk?”

“We can try my queen, but I doubt that will do anything. It seems these babies just wish not to live. They do not want to see Apollo’s sun driven chariot any longer.”

“Hush, do not say those things! We must try! These are Alexander’s children! He is expecting to come home to another child and he was blessed with two! It cannot end this way,” Olympias said with a passion in her voice.

******************************~

Olympias closed her eyes as she recalled the events from yesterday. She didn’t dare tell Hephaistion in his weakened state or else she feared that he would pass on from grief. Tears flew freely from her eyes. They tried everything, everything, Glaulcos was right. They did not want to live.

Alexander would be furious with her, she was entrusted to care for Hephaistion and their unborn child…children.

She looked at the sleeping form of Hephaistion with her eyes full of tears

She would tell him tomorrow…
