Olympias was standing outside of the palace, right at top of the steps were the entrance was. Her face showed no signs of emotion, she knew how to make that face, and she perfected that look. However, her foot told another story, she was tapping her foot on the ground nervously. A messenger arrived earlier this morning, informing her of her son’s arrival, it had been exactly four months since she read the letter that Alexander sent her informing her of his arrival. Now, today she waited patiently, nervously for Alexander. She thought of many, many ways to tell her son that there were no more children, she imagined it all, even Alexander’s reaction, which all ended up the same way, he was devastated. She hated seeing that look of disappointment in her son’s face, she saw it many times when he would look for his father’s approval and was denied it. How she hated her husband, she was glad she was dead.

“He’s here, King Alexander is here!”

Her servant’s voice shook Olympias’ mind from her flight. She swallowed hard when he saw her son walk up the steps. He looked like a god, he was dressed regally and the sun shone on him so bright that it made the people around him appear to be dull and lifeless. Alexander smiled when he saw his mother and quickened his pace to greet her.

“Mother, I am so glad to see you,” he said while embracing her.

“As I Alexander, as I,” she said while placing a kiss to her son’s cheek.

Arms were disentangled and Alexander looked around, “Where is Hephaistion mother,” he asked in a panicked tone.

“Do not worry my son, he is inside with Teodor,” she replied calmly.

Alexander raised an eyebrow, “Why isn’t he here to greet me with him? And of my newborn?”

Olympias sighed, “Alexander, he is not here because he didn’t want to see your reaction when I tell you what happened.”

Alexander’s face went grim, “What happened,” he questioned angrily.

Olympias was afraid of this, she could see his veins starting to pop out from his neck and his temple, “Come, let us speak of this matter inside, in private.”

Alexander complied and followed his mother.

Once inside he let his temper flare, “Mother what happened,” he yelled.

Olympias closed her eyes, “ Hephaistion did not carry one child ---”

Alexander’s eyes went wide, “What do you mean?”

“Let me finish Alexander,” she scolded her son, “Hephaistion carried two babies inside of him.”

“Two? Oh we were blessed,” Alexander exclaimed.”

“Yes that is what I said when I discovered this, it was a boy and a girl.”

“Was a,” he questioned softly as if dreading to ask this question.

“Yes, they died Alexander. They did not want to live,” Olympias replied all teary eyed.

“How? Why,” Alexander exclaimed.

“One night, Hephaistion was wailing in pain Alexander. In so much pain I heard his screams from my room. Hephaistion told me that the babies wanted to get out. I told him it was too early, he was in so much pain. I called his doctor. He told me that he needed to cut open Hephaistion to get the children out. By doing this he risked Hephaistion’s life. Everything went fine, the operation went smoothly, and the babies were out. However, they did not want to eat. They refused any medicine the doctor gave them and they refused Hephaistion’s breast milk. They lost the will to live.”

“By the gods, that must have been devastating on Hephaistion. Where is he,” Alexander questioned.

Olympias held back her tears from resurfacing those memories and said, “He is in the gardens with Teodor.”

Alexander embraced his mother and whispered in her ear, “It is okay mother, I do not blame you, fate was not on their sides. Its okay.”

“I thought you would send me away,” she replied bitterly.

“Shhh, mother its alright it wasn’t your fault.”

“Thank you for understanding Alexander.”

“Yes, well, I need to go find Hephaistion now.”
