Chapter Forty-Seven
“You’re brooding again.”
Xanatos didn’t bother turning to face his friend as he replied to the accusation.
“I am not brooding and don’t you have some Jedi stuff you should be off doing, rather than sitting here irritating me?”
Eitan pursed his lips at the jibe his gaze briefly flicking toward the still figure before he returned his focus to the data pad in his hands. He knew his friend didn’t mean the words and was in fact glad to have him around. Xanatos hated knowing his lover was within the Temple walls, as far removed from him as humanly possible. There was an air of frenzied desperation about Xanatos that worried him. If things didn’t work out with young Obi-Wan, Eitan feared he may lose his friend to the Darkside for good.
‘And here I thought you enjoyed my company.” Setting the data pad on his lap, his dark gaze sparkled with mischief. “These new delta ships are sweet. They cost a fortune however, the Jedi would never be able to afford even one to test out. I would give anything to get my hands on one.”
That captured Xanatos’s attention, prompting him to turn around and study his friend’s patently innocent expression.
“How many do you want?”
“I wasn’t dropping a hint.”
A rude snort. “Drop the act Delano. I’ve known you far to long to believe it.”
Before Eitan could offer a retort in his own defense, the door slide open and Xanatos’s aide stepped inside with a bow.
“You have another guest, My Lord. Should I escort him in?”
Eitan felt the sudden flood of excitement through the Force as Xanatos took an unsteady step forward. Getting to his feet, he hurried over and rested a calming hand on the other man’s arm, concerned by the tension he felt humming through a whip cord lean body. Xanatos relaxed beneath his grip, a curt nod of his head letting Eitan know he understood and would proceed with caution.
“Escort him in, Tio.”
“Very good, My Lord.” A small smile curved the aide’s lips as he stood back to allow the newcomer to enter the room.
Xanatos’s indrawn breath was easy to hear as Obi-Wan walked in and stopped just inside the door. The younger man was a vision of loveliness, his new found peace only enhancing what had been already enchanting features. He’d trimmed the thick locks of reddish-gold hair so that they now brushed just the bottom of his neck and brought attention to luminous eyes and tanned, high boned features.
Eitan shifted his weight to the opposite leg, earning himself a heated sideways glare from his friend. Flushing beneath his dark completion at having his thoughts be so easily read, he offered the new arrival a welcoming smile.
“It’s good to see you Obi-Wan. Your time with us certainly seems to have done wonders for you.”
Ignoring the waves of tension that flowed between the two friends, Obi-Wan returned the smile. “I’m glad I decided to go. Master Yoda has helped me deal with many issues that were holding me back.”
“I’m happy for you,” the swarthy Jedi replied before clapping Xanatos on the back with enough force to send him forward a step. “Xan, I’ll place that order and redirect the bill your direction.”
Not bothering to wait for a response, Eitan moved toward the door, pausing long enough to give Obi-Wan’s arm an encouraging squeeze. The two exchanged grins as they felt the surge of anger emanating from Xanatos, the Jedi Master leaving before he started anymore trouble.
Left alone at last, Obi-Wan met his lover’s unblinking gaze head on. His throat worked with emotion as he once again gazed upon the man he loved, his heart racing as he drank in the handsome features and whipcord lean body. He knew the conversation about to take place would not be an easy one, so many factors working against the two of them.
“I stopped by to offer you an apology.”
His quiet words caught the fallen Jedi by surprise, sapphire eyes widening with curiosity. “Apology? For what exactly?”
“For the way I’ve behaved since we joined forces. I’ve done nothing but take and demand even more from you, while offering nothing in return.” A helpless shrug. “I’ve doubted you when I had no reason to.”
“Is this some of the new found enlightenment you garnered while with the Jedi?”
Obi-Wan winced at the sneering tone. “Yes. I was selfish and self-involved, disregarding your feelings completely.”
When the older man merely continued to stare at him, Obi-Wan continued on with more than a little hesitancy. He had no idea if it were too late but knew he had to try and work things out.
“I’ve realized just how much I care about you; love you. I want to be completely honest before you make a decision.” Gathering his courage, he began to explain his plans. “I’m in the process of relocating my entire business here to Coruscant. My assistant is already finding me a permanent home.”
Xanatos stared at him as if he were a stranger, the throb of a blood vessel beneath alabaster skin the only visible reaction to his words.
“Who are you?” A shake of his head accompanied the harsh words. “I knew they’d brainwash you but I never imagined it would be this bad.”
“No one brainwashed me, Xan. I’ve just rediscovered old friends and don’t want to lose them again.” Obi-Wan sighed heavily in frustration. “I don’t want to lose you either.”
“Then where do I figure into these new plans of yours? My home is on Telos, Offworld is on Telos. You know very well that many of my business dealings are far from legal and must be kept from the eye of the Senate. Explain to me how there can be anything between us when you’ll be here and I’ll be light-years away?”
“It won’t be easy,” Obi-Wan admitted. “Perhaps we can divide our time between the two planets. You can run the legitimate side of Offworld from Coruscant and while we spend time on Telos, I have my assistant I can depend on to run things for us here.”
Terror filled Obi-Wan when his suggestion had Xanatos turning away in disgust. Hurrying forward, he moved around his lover, staring up at him with pleading eyes.
“I love you. Please, help me find a way for this to work.”
Faced with an implacable expression, he reached up in order to grasp his lover behind the neck and pulled his head down. Using lips and tongue, he broke past Xanatos’s barriers, deepening the kiss until they were both breathing heavily. His eyes stung as he savored the taste of the man he loved, a hand slowly sliding down a well defined chest. Tearing his mouth away with reluctance, Obi-Wan struggled to speak, his lips gently brushing the broken circle scar on Xanatos’s cheek.
“I’ll give you the time and space to think about this. I’ll be at my suite awaiting an answer.”
A last toe curling kiss before he forced himself to stride from the room. Xanatos took a shuddering breath and sank into a nearby chair, his legs too weak to hold him. Head buried in trembling hands, he tried to bring his thoughts into focus.
