*Jack - three months before Will join Tyler's crew*
Jack Sparrow reached Tortuga a few days after leaving Port Royal. The
Captain was a shadow of himself - he barely talked or ate. His mind
wandered about where Will was,and if he was alright. He could have been
caught by the rapist again, that was for sure. But Jack wasn't willing
to think about it very much. He was already down; thinking about Will
in the hands of that crazy man would only make Jack suffer more and more.
Annamaria greeted her Captain when she saw him, relieved to learn he hadn't
been caught by any lobster or Norrington. Then, she told Jack that his
crew was still there in Tortuga, waiting for him. 'At least that,' he
thought bitterly. He had asked Anna if they'd had any word from Will. If
the boy had really been caught by the rapist again,he could have managed
to escape and go to Tortuga to look for Jack or something. But no one
seemed to have heard any news of Will. Jack was starting to get really
worried,besides depressed.
As soon as he met Gibbs again,Jack asked him:
"Do ye remember Davies?"
"Aye,Jack." Gibbs answered. "Why?"
"He d Wid Will." Jack barely could speak, because his throat was strained.
"No." Gibbs widened his eyes.
Jack made a motion for Gibbs to follow him,and the older pirate did so.
They were at a tavern, and Jack didn't want to be overheard. As soon as
they found themselves at a more private place,Jack said:
"I have to hunt him down. I was with Will at Port Royal, and he was coming
here with me,but in that last night,he just vanished. I'm almost sure
Davies got him."
"But...Jack,it's been almost a year that you..."
"I know. But it seems time doesn't pass to that bastard. Are ye helping
me or not,mate?"
"Aye,Captain. Of course I will." Gibbs nodded.
For a month and a half,Jack hunted Davies, with no success. He and his crew
had even left the Caribbean for a while, but there was no sight of Davies'
ship. It was a big black-sailed vessel called The Seagull, and it was
a feared pirate ship, though not as feared as the Pearl.
Almost three months after Jack had left to hunt Davies,he came back to
Tortuga. He couldn't find the Seagull, and would ask any pirate he knew
at Tortuga if they'd heard anything about Will Turner. He just couldn't
continue hunting the man and not have even a word about him. It was useless.
Maybe by now some of the pirates had heard anything about Will's whereabouts.
It was this time that he met John Tyler. The pirate had just arrived at
Tortuga and then would go to the other pirate island. Wheck mck met him,
he said:
"John! Long time no see!"
"Jack!" The pirate hugged his old friend. "How're ye doing, mate?"
"Actually,I have a *big* problem." He sighed.
"Tell me," John asked.
"Have you heard about Will Turner?"
"Not Bootstrap's son!"
"Yes,that would be him exactly. I met him almost a year ago."
John nodded: "So...what about him?"
"Well...we became friends...I told him I was a friend of his father's...
and I helped him save his fiancé..."
"Is the boy /married/? Gods,time flies! I remember him as a one-year-old!"
"He was to be married, but something happened...he was..." Jack sighed.
"He was raped,John."
"Jesus Christ! But who did it to him?"
"Davies."
John's mouth opened. He didn't say a thing,as shocked as he was.
"And then I stayed with him for a while at his city. He lives in Port
Royal."
"I know it. Have plundered the city some years ago."
"So,John...we fell in love...me and Wilwellwell,I did. But on the day
that we would come here to Tortuga,he just disappeared." Jack's eyes were
watering.
"But how?"
"I think Davies must've found him. He was there in Port Royal. Raped him
twice. And wasn't caught by those bloody officers."
"Dear God,Jack. What can I do to help?"
"Just...well...I don't know." Jack's voice broke. "I'm so lost." He finally
cried. "I love him,John."
John put his hand on Jack's shoulder, trying to comfort his friend. Yes,
that was new. He'd never seen Jack cry for anyone. It seemed Jack's love
for Will was bigger than anything he had felt before.
"You know Davies." Jack sniffed. "He said to me he would harm Will. He
warned me. But I didn't believe him. I couldn't believe him. But I was
wrong...it's all my fault." Jack cried again. "I should have warned Will.
I should have told him to leave Port Royal..."
"Jack...if I find this lad,I'll let you know immediately. I'm going to
gather me crew and find the lad."
"If you find him...if he's still alive...take care of him for me," Jack
was feeling like crying again.
"I'll let you know if we find him,Jack. How long are ye staying here?"
"I don't know. Maybe some more days."
John just nodded. He would find that lad. Ah,he would.
He just couldn't imagine /Will/ would find him.
After John left,Jack continued to ask all the pirates he knew if they'd
seen Davies or Will. Jack gave them descrons, ons, but it continued to be
useless. No one seemed to have seen the Seagull or its Captain, nor Will.
Jack didn't know what to do.
---
Will had just left with John Tyler's crew when he was asked to go to the
Captain's cabin. Will went,a bit warily, but he trusted John. Anyway,as
he had never been in a pirate ship being part of its crew,he didn't really
know what John could want from him. And a man who had been raped twice
couldn't be as innocent as a man who hadn't been raped at all. Will trusted
the Captain, but was a bit uncomfortable with some men of the crew who
were eyeing him from head to toe. What Will didn't realize was that the
men were staring because he was /new/,for God's sake, and not because
they wanted him.
Will knocked at the door of John's cabin. The Captain said:
"Come in."
Will entered thein,ain,and John said:
"Thank ye for coming,Will. There's something I want to discuss with ye."
"Aye,Captain," Will replied.
"Sit down, lad," He asked Will, who did so. Then John spoke: "Well, you
told me not to tell Jack where you are. But as his friend,I promised
him I'd tell him if I met you."
Will's eyes widened: "No...please...Captain,you can't tell him..."
John became surprised with the fear in Will's eyes. He felt sorry for
the lad.
"Will,I told Jack that I would tell him. But I have no need to say that
you are with me."
Will wiped the tears wer were starting to fall down, and nodded. "Alright.
If you need to do it,then go on."
"Jack's worried about ye,lad. Do ye think it's right that he's suffering
when you're alive and well?"
Will shook his head, feeling embarrassed. Was he being this selfish? Did
Jack care about him like that?
"Why don't you write to him?" John asked. "So,you tell him what you
want to tell. But please...let him know you're alright, lad. He's thinking
you've been caught by Davies again."
"Davies?" Will asked. John nodded,a little uncomfortably: "The man who...
did that to ye..." The Captain said, waiting for a rash reaction from
Will. But the boy just sighed, and said:
"Alright,Captain. I'm writing to Jack."
John allowed Will some privacy and left his quarters for a while. Will
was the child of Bootstrap...he could be trusted. It wasn't a big deal
to let him stay writing alone on his quarters,John thought.
Will started to write:
"Jack,
It's Will."
Will sighed.
"I'm writing to let you know that...I'm alright. I left Port Royal that
night because I needed to be alone. I'm sorry,Jack. I know you were
worried. I'm really sorry. But I couldn't stay with you."
A tear rolled down Will's cheek.
"It's not that I don't love you. I /can't/ love anyone after what happened
to me.
I met Captain John Tyler. He's a good man and told me he was your friend.
He is going to send this letter for me,but I can't say where I am now,
Jack. Please go on with your life. I'm fine. You'll find another one who
can love you the way you deserve to be loved. I'm not the one to do it.
I can't even love myself.
Perhaps someday we will meet again.
But know that I'm very grateful for what you did for me when I was broken.
I'm sorry I've broken your heart.
Love,
Will."
When Will folded the letter, his cheeks were wet with tears. He wasn't
sure of any of that. He wasn't sure if he really didn't love Jack. But
he was sure that he needed to stay alone for a while. He couldn't give
Jack any hope.
Crying,Will was going to call John and give him the letter, but something
caught his attention.
Letters.
They were on the Captain's bunk,as if John had read them recently. As
Will was writing on the table,he hadn't seen them before.
Will took a look at the door and went to the bunk. He sat down and started
to to look at the letters. It wasn't right to read someone else's letters,
but Will's curiosity got him.
He opened one of them. It seemed to be a love letter. Will felt ashamed
to be reading this stuff, but continued to. It was really a love letter,
full of promises and caring words. Will smiled a bit; it'd be good if
he had someone to love like that. Someone real. It'd be good if he let
Jack love him...but maybe it wasn't the time.
Will was reading happily when the letter came to an end and the signature
was...
Bill Turner.
Will's eyes widened. No,it couldn't be. Had his father been John's lover?
Will shook his head,as if trying to deny it,but thought better of it; why
couldn't it be true? John knew Jack and Bootstrap. Just how close had
they been in the past?
But Will couldn't ask Johnthinthing,or the Captain would know Will had
been reading his letters. So,he quickly stood up from the bunk and called
the Captain, telling him he had finished Jack's letter.
Oblivious,John took the letter and sent it to Tortuga when they stopped
in the nearest port.
Will went on with his life. He continued to be part of John's crew for
almost two years. Sometimes he wondered about his father and John, and the
fact that they'd been lovers. And he grew used to that; it wasn't really
a big deal.
And sometimes Will thought of Jack. Not only because he missed the pirate,
but because he felt guilty. He had been selfish and childish running away
from him. Running away from the love Jack could surely give him. And Will
tortured himself with thoughts of what could have happened between them.
The love that they could have shared.
He longed for Jack, but co't g't go back. Could he? Jack was lost to him.
He'd be lucky if Jack wanted to /look/ at him,let alone be his lover.
So,Will went on with his life and considered himself healed from all the
wounds. He made friends with some members of the crew. Half of them knew
everything about the rapes. Will wasn't afraid to tell anymore. He wanted
to release himself from that weight in his chest. And,to his surprise,
his friends felt a deep sympathy for him. Some promised to kill the man
if they had the chance.
Will felt well among the crew, and felt he was really healed.
------
Jack received Will's letter in a stormy evening. He was at an inn in
Tortuga, drowning himself in rum,as he used to do since he had lost Will.
The lightnings brightened the sky and Jack's tears fell while he read
the letter. He didn't know what was the worst; to think Will had been
kidnapped by Davies or to know he had gone away because he wanted to.
Because he couldn't love Jack the way Jack loved him.
"Why?" Jack thought aloud. "Why have you left me,Will? I would have taken
care of ye...I'd told ye I didn't care if you couldn't make love to me,
dammit!" Jack shouted to no one and ripped the letter into tiny pieces.
He was lonely, hurt and the man he loved had just said in a letter that
he couldn't love Jack back.
The rum stock in the inn just vanished that night.
'I hate you,Will.' Jack thought, feeling rejected and hurt. So,he had done
everything for Will, even risked his life being under Norrington's nose,
and that was how Will thanked him? Leaving him alone like that? Drowning
in his suffering,Jack couldn't think straightly. He just remembered how
hurt he felt. He promised himself not to think of Will anymore.
But,as he had feared...he failed.
Almost two years after receiving the letter,Jack was in a friendly port.
His crew had been given leave for the night and Jack was going to a brothel
to have two or more whores slake his lust.
He thought of Will those days, but tried to push him off his mind,at least
while he was with the whores. Their kisses, their caresses, almost made Jack
forget Will. Almost.
But thoughts of the former blacksmith always came back to him. Jack wasn't
angry with Will anymore. In his mind,he had forgiven the lad. Only God
knew how Will felt after the rapes. He had been a virgin before them,
for God's sake. Jack realized Will's pain should have been strong. So
strong as to make the lad give almost everything up. And these days,Jack
just prayed he was alright...that Will hadn't done anything stupid,as he
seemed to like doing.
