Part 5

Jareth wanted to make her forget the world outside, he wanted to make her think only of him, and she was. But he knew he had lost, she would not stay. It rang with he whole being, tonight only.

Even though her body sang for him, even though she dreamt of him nightly and wanted his touch.

Oh the images she had in her head made him weak. He wanted to show her everything; he wanted to make those dreams come true and more so. But he resisted.

She had that power over him; she could make him think of things other than himself.

He knelt on the bed, cautious and aware. She was in his bed with her arms open. She wanted him to come to her and he had. But he wanted to give her more.

Only a kiss was allowed though; and a kiss it would be.

He placed his mouth on hers in a gentile kiss that grew into something more, something fierce and possessing, consuming every thought. Sarah's arms wrapped around Jareth pulling him closer, and he obeyed. He swung his legs over hers and put his hand on the back of her head. The other cupped her face in a possessive gesture.

He deepened the kiss, prodding her mouth open and exploring. Tasting her sweetness and the wine, trying to touch her very soul.

Her skin was hot to touch and her mind was flooded with light and desire, coulcould only think of this kiss. This touch that only been imagined before. A kiss that satisfied but left her hungry for more.

Jareth wanted to give her more but that would be a violation. Soon she would realise and he would loose her again. He broke it off, being what she wanted him to be.

Breathless for a moment Sarah kept her eyes closed, her lips were a bruised scarlet, and her cheeks flushed. Somewhere during the kiss her and Jareth's legs had switched positions and she lay open and inviting. Jareth just stayed positioned over her and waited, his patience showing the depth of his desires and feelings. Feelings she had made him feel.

When Sarah was again herself she looked up at her king, for he was that now. The few acts of kindness and tolerance had won her over to him, more than the wine and the passion. He had a heart; she knew that now and adored him for it.

"Lie down so I can hold you, tell me. Tell me please why you came to me then."

Jareth obeyed her and lay down so both were comfortable and he could rest his head on her chest.

"I have heart your heart calling for a long time Sarah. You have been searching for escape, as I was as well. Your being called me as few can from beyond the veil. I heard it; I felt it echoed in my own soul.

Initially you wanted a hero, someone to take you away and free you from the world you never felt you belonged to. I knew you didn't belong there. I could see what was different in you and initially I wanted that something to use for my own end.

I tried to be that hero for you doubted; your doubt separated us. I then watched you play games and listened to your dreams, I wanted to use your dreams to win you, to make you believe. I sat by you while you played, I watched over you when you cried, but you never saw me.

"Then you were give a book, a book that spoke of me and my kind, it rang true to you like nothing else and you latched onto it. You hoped it would bring you release and make you fit in. You saw your dreams in that book. But it wasn't enough, you still doubted; you weren't ready to see me. I used what powers I have to expose you to more and more because I wanted you to believe.

"When your life turned upside down I watched you heart ache. I felt your pain. You again called out for a rescuer, someone to take you away. But you still doubted in me, you cried but didn't think it would work. I had to watch and wait.

"You received a book and a bauble from your mother, a book I helped her pick. It made you aware of me. Then that night you called me, you called with heart and conviction but I couldn't move. Then you called them. They didn't care if you doubted they wanted to spite me. They and you forced me into my role.

"When you faced me it was hard. You rejected everything I offered and decided you had to fight and defeat me. I lost because you wanted me to. Then you left us, a changed person, stronger more independent, but still you knew something was different. You clung to them and called upon them. I watched you, I heard you, I knew your thoughts and desires, but I was only able to watch.

"Your belief was enough to sustain them in your world, your faith in them is what helped me. I gathered strength, to come unbidden is hard on anyone of us, and I knew it would be hard on me because I had to fight your image of me as well."

"Why did you need to fight my image of you?" Sarah's hand was stroking Jareth's hair.

Jareth sighed. "You keep asking me this, you believe I am one way, I have to act that way. You have that much power over me Sarah. I can't resist you."

"I never..."

"You did, that was why I was there. I couldn't let my desires go. I couldn't let you go. I was worried that when you started you new life with him you would forget, you would stop believing. I had to be there to remind you. I wanted you to believe again."

Jareth sighed, with is heat on her breast, listening to her heartbeat he felt at peace, he never wanted this to end, but it would. He had to go on, she needed the full story. He called up the image of Sarah on her wedding day to his mind, feeling the heartache anew.

"There you were in a dress you picked with care. So unlike the one of your dreams, but perfect in everyway, it made you radiant. Roses and lilies were everywhere their scent was decadent. Your hair, shorter than it is now, was loose around your neck and face.

I couldn't stop it anymore than I could stop the stars, but I needed you to see me. I walked out on that bandstand and when it was the right time I sang. I sang to you so you would never forget."

"I never have forgotten you, how could I? You are the embodiment of my dreams."

Jareth started to hum, just letting Sarah's hand stroke his face. Soon the memory and the song overtook them both.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

The wedding was perfect; Sarah was entranced by it all. After all the

stressful work involved everything had gone by without a hitch. Dinner

was just about over and the band was starting to set up.

The lead singer looked vaguely familiar to Sarah, but she dismissed it.

She had hired them months before and hadn't seen the lead singer since then.

She instead looked to her father and Toby sitting on with her at the head

table, and to her groom, her husband. She was so happy

She had met him during her freshman year at College and started dating him two years later. Now they were getting married.

The best man had just finished grilling the groom and made the

announcements for everyone who couldn't attend the couple's happiest day.

He then looked to the band and a base chord was strummed.

"All right ladies and gentlemen the couple's first dance as Bride and Groom!"

Sarah and her new husband rose and made their way to the dance floor.

As they looked into each other's eyes a Song started up.

Dance with me, feel the rhythm in your soul,

Know that I am with you and will never let go.

Even if the moves are new and strange,

Even if your feet hurt and the air in your lungs burn,

Touch the moon just once in your life.

And never look back toward old worlds

That once plagued mind and memory.

Breathe in the bliss that can be found in

the exhaustion of the reel.

Sarah looked up at the singer; this wasn't her and David's song. This wasn't anything she had heard before, except that voice, that lilt.

Sarah tried to remember where it came from.

Let the sweat drip down your back,

Let the hairs on your neck stick to you.

Feel all the joy that is there.

And never heed those who would watch and jest.

Touch the moon just once in your life.

And n loo look back toward old worlds

that once plagued mind and memory.

Breathe in the bliss that can be found in

the exhaustion of the reel

A dim memory of an owl's wing, a world underneath everything the Sarah dreamed of. Friends and a foe, yet a plea for love. Where was he from?

They have not found this world,

The world that you and I have found

The rapture of the step,

It is yours and mine.

Touch the moon just once in your life.

And never look back toward old worlds

that once plagued mind and memory.

Breathe in the bliss that can be found in

the exhaustion of the reel

A dance, a ball, cruel faces, taunting laughter, and Him!!!!!!!

You have sprouted wings and love.

Together we lock hands and fly.

The music blends with our souls

And we dance together in the moonlit night.

And I kiss your fevered hands,

So that I remain in the corner of your memory

With my hair dishevelled

I dance Dance Dance.

The music continued on and the lead singer stepped away from the microphone.

Sarah parted from her beloved to look at the man from her dreams.

Jareth just nodded to her and smiled his smile. She understood, he

came to wish her the best he could. To give her her dreams.

He loved her that much that he would give her away.

The end of the night and Sarah still wanted to speak with him.

She tired but kept being pulled away to talk to some other well wisher.

Finally it came time to leave. Sarah tossed her flowers and left under a

cloud of rice. She and her husband slept entwined in each other's arms.

Though in the early morning Sarah awoke and went to the bathroom. She

looked into the mirror andled led him softly.

Unlike her other friends of the Labyrinth, Jareth didn't appear in the mirror, nor did he appear behind her. Sarah whispered a quiet thank you to the air and returned to bed.

An owl sat on the branch of an old oak tree outside the window and titled its head. It knew all it needed to know and was content in that.

With breakfast there was a small box wrapped in black paper. Once opened it was revealed to be a crystal ball.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

"I tried to find you, I tried to call you. You didn't appear."

" I was there, too exhausted to show myself in true form." He stopped quite and still.

"Jareth?

"Too heartbroken. You didn't see me, you rarely do."

Saddened, the lay there in silence comforting each other. Sarah reflected on her memories of this unique relationship. Jareth gathered his strength. He knew he would have to fight her again.

"No you don't" she whispered, "You don't need to fight me anymore Jareth." She held him tight to her. In their closeness a new sight came to Sarah, she was suddenly more aware than ever.

"The fight is over, dawn will be on us soon. I have stayed and been with you, and yes I have grown to love you, but it wasn't that hard Jareth. I have almost loved you from the start."

Jareth opened his mouth to speak but she wouldn't let him.

"I am committed to a life out there. Others need me Jareth. I can not stay."

"Sarah, let me show you what it could be, let me make you forget them." He removed himself from her arms to look in her eyes. He was desperate to keep her, to keep this. When he tried to kiss her to make her forget again she turned away.

"I cannot abandon them anymore than you could leave here. When my duty is done and his life over.." She looked so wise and beautiful, but suddenly concerned.

"Jareth, would you accept me as a toothless old crone?" She started to cry.

Jareth yearned to kiss those tears away, it tore him in two but he accepted her prophecy. "Of course" he breathed still looking in her eyes.

"This is the first time I have known so much. I know why I call to you and why you can hear me. I know why I was so at odds with the world. I can read your thoughts as you read mine. I can see what lies before me." She broke eye contact with him and breathed a soul-shattering sob. "Why am I so scared Jareth? Is it like this for you?"

"I am ageless, immortal, as you were meant to be. One of the last changelings set out on the world Sarah, I was to be one of them too, until"

"Until it was discovered you had your gift."

Jareth nodded "Few changing survive into adulthood Sarah, those that do are strong, but it is hard to make them believe. When you return to us we will welcome you home. Live your mortal life and we will wait, I will wait." He did kiss her then. Tender and full of passion, a kiss of deepest devotion and love.

Sarah sighed and closed her eyes. Her awareness changed and the future wasn't so clear anymore. Jareth's kiss changed. It lost its heat and was more like the kisses David gave her. Sedate, comforting, but mundane.

When she opened her eyes she saw them both smiling at her with their different smiles. Then Jareth faded and only David remained.

40 years later.

Chole taped up the last of the cardboard boxes. Mom was getting too old to live in the big house by herself. After a long time Duncan and Chole has convinced her to sell the house and move into a retirement home.

Chloe's own children were away at University, and Chloe wanted her mother to move in with her and hesbansband. But Sarah said she would make other plans.

So here they were, packing away a lifetime of memories.

"That's us mom." Chole turned to face her mother. "When do the movers arrive?"

Sarah, now and elderly grandmother, was holding a dolling in a glass container and a black box.

She handed them both to her daughter. "Here, these are for you."

"Mom! This doll, it was a gift from Grandma, you treasure this!" Chole was shocked. "I can't take these, they are your most prized possessions."

"Where I am going I won't need them sweetie. I have only kept them to remember."

"Remember?"

"You were 7, and angry."

The memories flooded back to Chole. " I thought that was a dream, a dream from the stories you told me." Chole put the doll on a near by box and opened up the one her mother had given her. Inside was a crystal.

"The house has been sold, the money will be willed to you both. I want you to have these Chole, You can remember, where Duncan was too young." Sarah picked up the crystal and turned her hand so it caught the sunlight. "Do this and you will see me, but I must go."

"Where mom?" Chole was confused, it had been a d ream hadn't it?"

"To the Underground with me." A man stepped out of the shadows into Chloe's view.

"Jareth?" Chole dropped the crystal and it shattered on the floor. "You're REAL!" She looked to her mother.

"Yes Chole, I'm leaving with him. Do what you want with everything, it is all yours."

"But. But"

"Please tell Duncan I love him." Sarah embraced her daughter and turned to the Goblin King. He opened his arms to her and Sarah was her youthful self again.

When Chloe was her mother in Jareth's arms she understood that this was meant to be. Sarah had only waited until her children were ready to let go. Chole smile and looked at her mother in youthful glow. "I'll look after the doll mom. I love you!"

Sarah and Jareth started to fade from sight, "I love you two sweet heart." Then they were gone.

Chloe's heart ached as it happens when a loved one leaves us, but she knew it was better than a retirement home.

Chole started moving boxes to her car, she would take them home and sort them there.

"Chole, you might want this" His voice startled her. Jareth handed her the crystal, mended. "Should you need us.."

"I'll call"
