Losing Jack

Chapter 5: Losing Jack

The next morning Riddick wakes up to find Jack gone. He jumps out of bed, thankful that he never took of his clothes and rushes out of the room, calling Jack’s name. He runs down the stairs skipping steps three at a time and reaches the kitchen to find them having breakfast.

Jack looks over to him with a worried look, “What’s wrong Riddick?”

Jason is staring at him wide eyed and so is Saia. Rhianna and Ryan are sitting on their special table eating, they see their father and run to him, kissing and hugging him.

“Riddick? Are you OK?” Jack asks again after she doesn’t receive a response.

“I should be asking you that. Are you OK?” he walks up to her holding Rhiannas hand. Ryan goes back to his table to eat. Riddick touches Jack’s forehead and she flinches away from his touch, as if it scolded her.

“I’m fine, why wouldn’t I be?” Jason notices her unusual behavior. Riddick decides not to bring up last nights events while the children are present. Jack serves him breakfast and he eats, in silence.

Later on that afternoon while the children play in the playroom, Riddick mentions what happened in the mines to Jack, Saia and Jason. Leaving out the name Rain. Jason seems intrigued, he asks Riddick details about the creatures’ appearance. Saia suggests that maybe the unfortunate child had been exposed to radiation. Riddick simply says, “Maybe” but they all know better. Jack seems uninterested by the whole conversation. Riddick can even sense a change in her; her body language, her presence and her scent.

Outside in the back porch, the blood that stained the wooden floor is gone. Jack is kneeled down by her flowers gardening. Riddick walks up to her and kneels beside her.

“Can I help?” He says it more to get her talking; she hasn’t said a word since this morning. Jack continues to replace a dead rose bush, but she doesn’t answer him. The rose bushes roots are deep underground, making it difficult for Jack to tear them out. Riddick decides to help her. She protests at first, but gives in. Riddick grips the bush at the very bottom and yanks it out. Jack turns to look at him abruptly and opens her nostrils.

“You’re cut,” she says. Riddick is about to say something when Jack covers her mouth a runs inside obviously about to hurl.

Riddick looks at his hands and finds the cut, he hadn’t even felt it, its very small, but the blood is visible. How in the world had Jack known he was cut? He follows her inside and finds her walking out of the bathroom wiping her mouth with a towel.

“That was disgusting. I guess breakfast didn’t sit well with me,” she says with a half smile noticing Riddick’s concern. “I’m fine,” she continues.

“We’re going to the doctors,” he says with authority. Jack tries to argue, but knows there isn’t any point.

The next day Riddick literally drags Jack to Doctor Oxfeld’s home. A short pleasantly man, dark brown eyes and brown hair with a heavy English accent. They’d become friends and trust him with their secret. Doctor Oxfeld prefers to work from his home than a gloomy office.

Jack sits impatiently in the waiting area of the house while Riddick talks to the Doctor. Minutes later Oxfeld calls Jack into the examination room. Riddick is sitting on a stool beside the plain lab bed. Jack sits and rolls her eyes at Riddick.

“So Jack, tell me what’s the problem?” Oxfeld asks.

Jack sighs, “I’m fine Doc, however my husband here is a worry bug. I threw up my breakfast, big deal!”

Oxfeld asks her some basic questions and takes her pressure. He looks down and frowns as if confused and shakes his head. Riddick watches the Doctors every move. With a small flashlight he checks her yes over and over. He lifts the back of Jack’s shirt and listens for her heartbeat. He moves the stethoscope around. He asks Jack to unbutton her shirt and places the scope on her chest listening intently. The look on Oxfeld’s face is chilling and his eyes lock on Riddick. The Doc asks his assistant to draw some blood from Jack and sends it to the lab.

“Tell you what Jack. Let me talk to Riddick alone for a few minutes OK?” Oxfeld says, not wanting to look into Jack’s eyes; afraid she might see his weariness. She walks out and shuts the door.

Riddick stands up, “So?”

Oxfeld paces the room, rubbing his head with his hand.

“In all the years that I’ve been in practice Riddick, I’ve never come across anything like this. I mean her pressure is so low. . . I think she’s very ill mi friend .” Riddick smiles nervously, surely Doc made a mistake or perhaps he’s joking.

“Ill, are you sure. . . What are you telling me Doc?” Riddick asks, scared and confused.

“Nothing yet Riddick, I don’t want to jump to conclusions yet. Let me have her blood sample examined, and then I’ll be ale to make a more accurate diagnosis. For now have her rest and eat right, OK? I’ll call when I have the results in” Oxfeld walks Riddick out to the waiting room and watches the couple leave.

The truth is Oxfeld already has an idea of what is happening to Jack, but something like this has to be handled carefully. Doc saw the marks on Jack’s neck, barely visible, but the consequences of those marks are lethal. Nothing he did from this point on could save Jack. How would he tell his friend that he’s losing his wife?
