Sam

Okay, sorry about that little break, but I'm back and updating. Thanks for the reviews! The more feedback I get, the faster I write. Anyway, I'm sorry this is short, but RL is getting a little hectic. Enjoy the chapter!

"Codi?" Sam glanced around the darkened room, hesitantly. He hadn't seen Codi since the night before, when she left for the boardwalk. Her mom wasn't around much, wouldn't notice if she didn't come home, but Sam did. They were the same age and had been friends as kids, but ever since they'd moved in here, she'd been different, not the same as she was when they were younger. She was wilder now, without much thought for anything other than a good time. As far as he could tell, she spent every night partying at the Boardwalk and he could've sworn that he saw her ride by on a motorcycle with some blond guy in black leather the night before.

It was after ten and Codi wasn't in her room. The bed hadn't been slept in either and Sam backed out of the room, shaking his head and making his way down the stairs and out the front door. He grabbed his coat off the hook near the door and slid it on, even as he picked up his bicycle and threw his leg over it. Barely pedaling, he coasted down the hill, toward town. He was going to the Boardwalk to find his cousin.

She was lounging on the back of a motorcycle, her feet up on the gas tank, bare toes pointed. Glancing around, he didn't see anyone with her and slowly approached. When she saw him, Codi raised one golden eyebrow. "Sammy. What are you doing down here?" she asked. "Looking for you. Where have you been, Codi?" He was worried about her. She could see it in his expression, his brow furrowed, cute little nose wrinkled. Sam had always reminded her of an overgrown schoolboy, as if he'd gotten older, taller, but hadn't really grown up. He still read comic books for crying out loud! "I've been around. You know, I don't think I've ever seen you on this part of the Boardwalk before," she said, swinging her legs down to straddle the bike and leaning forward so her hair fell into her eyes. "That's because there's nothing to do down here but get in trouble," he said, gesturing to the area around them, a stretch of beach dotted with small fires and shadowed areas where people were in various stages of undress. It was the only area of the Boardwalk that wasn't patrolled by security guards and the cops usually steered clear, as if they knew it was a lost cause. "And you were never one to get into trouble," Codi said, boredly, rolling her eyes. "Really, Sammy, I worry about you," she sighed. "Yeah, well, I worry about you too, like when you don't come home at night and I find you sitting on a big black Harley, dressed like some dancer out of an MTV video," he said, getting closer, his eyes darting around, nervously, as if afraid the owner of the big black Harley might appear at any moment. "Oh, come on, cuz, live a little," she said with a grin. "No, you come on. Let's get out of here," he said, reaching for her arm. She drew back and cocked her head at him, a small smile playing around the corners of her mouth. "I like it here. You might too, you know, if you gave it a chance." "No thanks, it's not my style," he said, taking a step back, worrying his lower lip with his teeth. His eyes widened when Paul stepped out of the crowd and slid his arms around her from behind. As they'd agreed, Paul didn't speak and the others didn't show themselves, but Sam still got that scared rabbit look about him and started backing up, toward the light of the main stretch behind him. "You're sure you don't wanna come play, Sam?" she asked, swinging her legs on either side of the bike. "I'm sure. Just come home tonight, okay? Before someone notices you're gone?" "I'll think about it," she said, as he turned and disappeared.

Codi sighed as David, Dwayne and Marko materialized around her. "I still say we should have just grabbed him," Marko grumbled. "No, that's not the way to get to Sammy," said Codi, knowingly. "Sorry, Kitten, but your way didn't seem to work so well either," said Dwayne, reaching out and tracing her bottom lip. She nipped at his finger, her eyes still lingering on Sam's retreating form. "Oh, it's working. Just wait. Sam's a natural mother hen. He'll go home and pace and worry, then he'll realize that Mike isn't coming home either and that he hasn't been around for a while and he'll be back. He'll come looking for us, trying to get us to come home and when he can't, he'll decide he's got to stay close to us, too keep us out of trouble." Codi sounded like she was talking to herself. "And when he finds out the truth?" asked Paul, nuzzling lightly behind her ear. "It'll be too late," David answered for her. He shot Codi a sideways glance and she smirked, blinking slowly, like a confident feline who knows she right.
