FIVE
Jack knew he was nothing like the pirates she described to him. He was not one of them. She was talking about Barbary pirates… those miscreants killed for the pure sport of it. He understood why she needed revenge. But he was not one of them and he was trying desperately to tell her. But she was too enraged, in too much pain. Jack looked down at his chest as blood oozed… hopefully she'd give him the chance. He didn't pity her nor could he bring himself to hate her no matter how much pain she might inflict on him. No, she was justified, now if he could only make her see that he was not the one she wanted to take her revenge out on.

Down here in his dungeon, there was no way for him to know what time of day it was or how long he might have been down here. He couldn't be sure how long the drug had left him unconscious. And he'd passed out once while she'd beat him. All concept of time seemed to wane; his stomach was telling him he'd been here quite awhile. He was hungry and the gag was drying his mouth and throat out drastically. He'd let her beat him again for a drink of rum, but thought he'd better not actually tell her this. He laughed slightly at the thought… he was going to do his best to just be a good boy and maybe he might manage to convince her to turn him loose.

The key turned in the lock and Jack tensed up involuntarily. He looked at her and relaxed a little when he saw she was carrying a cup and a plate. And if she plans to just eat her dinner watching you suffer, the demon in his mind taunted. She wasn't that cruel was she? Jack groaned from behind the gag and tried not to whimper, and then his stomach let out a low but loud growl.

"I suppose you're hungry," she said.

Jack nodded.

"All right pirate… I'm going to take the gag out of your mouth, but if you give me trouble I promise to make it very bad for you," she warned.

Jack nodded again that he understood.

She stood on the chair and untied the rag that held the bit of leather in his mouth. She held out her hand and Jack let it drop from his mouth. She got down from the chair.

"Thank ye," Jack's voice rasped.

She retrieved the glass and again stood on the chair, "Drink," she told him. She held the glass and Jack drank a quarter of the contents. She took the glass away.

"Are you hungry," she asked.

"Aye quite… how long have I been here," he asked. She gave him a hard look and he lowered his eyes and waited for her to punish him for asking her a question.

"Not long," she said standing on the chair again.

Jack looked up, "Elle… please, I'm going numb," he said.

"And am I supposed to feel sorry for you," she asked and spooned up a bit of the stew for him.

Jack took the morsel she offered and chewed slowly. "I'd like to talk to ye love," he whispered.
