Chapter Five

Xanatos glanced up from the stack of flimsi-sheets he was signing for his hovering secretary, his gaze zeroing in on the figure who stood staring out the window. He could tell by the young man’s rigid stance that he hadn’t been forgiven yet. Obi-Wan had been surly and distant ever since their encounter several days ago on the very desk Xan sat at. Xanatos knew he’d slipped under the heavy shielding Obi-Wan kept around his emotions, a fact that filled him with satisfaction as much as it angered his young lover.

"Is there anything else I can do for you right now, My Lord?"

Realizing he’d added his signature to the last of the sheets, Xanatos sat back in the chair as Tio gathered up the documents, his gaze still fixed on Obi-Wan’s back.

"Have the men ready the ship. We leave first thing in the morning," he ordered, a smile twisting his lips as Obi-Wan’s head jerked to the side at his words.

"Our destination?"

"Telos. We’re going home for a well deserved rest."

"Very good, My Lord!" Tio grinned happily as he hurried from the room.

A weighted silence filled the room after his departure, neither man willing to be the first to break the tense atmosphere between them. Xanatos rocked back and forth in the leather chair, his brooding stare boring into the back of Obi-Wan’s head, willing him to turn around. It only took a few minutes before he got his wish.

"You’re just walking away from our agreement?" The words were heated, but also held an underlying ring of hurt.

"What makes you say that?"

Obi-Wan spun around, his eyes flashing as he pinned the fallen Jedi down with a burning look of betrayal. "You’re going back to Telos. I suppose you got what you wanted and have no further use for me?"

"How do you know what I want, Obi-Wan? You’re so focused on holding me and the rest of the galaxy at bay, you can’t see past your own nose," Xanatos did nothing to hide his disgust, his gaze raking the younger man. "If anybody’s been used so far, it’s me."

Obi-Wan flushed bright red, hands clenching at his sides as he fought for composure. "What do you want from me? What was that exhibition you put on in here all about?"

Xanatos shot to his feet and was around the desk in record time as he strode up to his lover. Halting mere inches from Obi-Wan’s position, he searched the younger man’s eyes before responding.

"I wanted to make you face the truth."

"The truth about what?"

Xanatos reached out and gently rubbed the back of his hand against a smooth cheek, smiling slightly as Obi-Wan instinctively leaned into the caress.

"I won’t allow you to label this thing between as mere sexual attraction. I won’t allow you to just brush it off once you’ve gotten what you want - to brush me off and walk away without a second glance."

Confusion clouded the multi-hued eyes at his admission. "Then what is it, if not just sex?"

The fallen Jedi leaned closer, lips barely brushing the younger man’s. "Affection? Or perhaps something even stronger? Something that neither of us can deny."

Obi-Wan snorted as he drew back. The smirk that had twisted his lips gradually faded as Xanatos allowed him a brief glimpse of what could be, if he’d only lower his barriers. Head shaking in negation, he took an involuntary step backwards as if afraid of being contaminated.

"I won’t give myself to anyone that deeply, Xanatos. I can’t! I’m sorry if you misunderstood my intentions, I never meant to lead you on. The sex is amazing but that’s all I have to offer. I guess it’s up to you to decide whether or not that’s enough."

The smile Xanatos gifted him with was tinged with pity as the fallen Jedi pressed an almost brotherly kiss against his forehead. "I’m afraid at my age mere bed sports aren’t enough to hold my interest."

Pulling away he moved back to the desk in order to gather the few items he had there, ignoring his young lover’s shocked stare. "I’d like for you to accompany us to Telos. I have more resources there that can bring us Jinn in a shorter amount of time than you do here. Plus I’d like to share my homeworld with you."

Obi-Wan stirred himself enough to question the last part of his speech. "Why? After I basically rejected you, why would you want to show me Telos?"

"Ouch," Xanatos muttered with a wince. "Blunt and to the point."

Obi-Wan’s head fell forward in shame. "I’m sorry."

"No don’t be." Xanatos waved a dismissive hand in the air. "I prefer brutal honesty to word games and trite phrases. They remind me too much of my years with the Jedi. As for my reason for wanting to share my home world, you look overworked. I think it would do you some good to relinquish control for awhile and just enjoy yourself. Telos is a beautiful place to accomplish that."

Obi-Wan lifted his head, gaze solemn and slightly hesitant. "You’ve never mentioned what went wrong between you and Jinn."

Sapphire eyes grew distant at his query, a lock of ebony hair falling to cover Xanatos’ expression as he looked away. "Ah, I wondered how long it would take before you got around to asking."

When he offered up no further explanation, the younger man shifted impatiently. "I told you everything."

"So you did," Xanatos mused as he made his way to the door.

"Xan!"

Obi-Wan’s irritated cry had him pausing to look back. Something that may have been laughter gleamed in the blue depths of his eyes as he shrugged with apparent unconcern.

"Perhaps, if you accompany me to Telos, I can be enticed to tell you the entire tale."

"You bastard! That’s blackmail!"

The hurt expression that crossed the Fallen Jedi’s features was so obviously for show, Obi-Wan's outrage quickly changed humor.

"I prefer to see it as a brilliant war strategy," Xanatos retorted.

"War? What are you and I at war for?"

The heated look Xanatos leveled him with had Obi-Wan feeling weak in the knees.

"For your heart of course, brat."

Xanatos left the room after dropping his bombshell, leaving a stunned and flustered Obi-Wan behind. His head was telling him the older man was merely toying with his emotions, trying to keep him off balance. It was no doubt a bid by the fallen Jedi to gain power over his younger companion. He wanted to bind Obi-Wan to him with silken chains, to bend him to his will. Xanatos ws not to be trusted. Even as he silently assured himself that he wouldn’t lower his guard, Obi-Wan couldn’t ignore the little voice that mocked him.

It knew the truth of what dwelled deep in the shadowed recesses of his heart.
