Life changes

Now this surprised her. “Last I knew you could fly yourself. What’s going on?”

He again shrugged, and she sighed. “Okay, go back to the hangar, I’ll meet you there in a few minutes.”

Footfalls faded in the distance, leading him away from where she stood, shaking her head.

She dressed quickly, donning a simple tank top and tight fitting, but comfortable, black jeans, and gathered her belongings. She didn’t bother with her hair, her curiosity was getting the better of her.

As she stepped out into the night air she heard the low thrumming of a ship’s engines and looked around. Hovering above the settlement was a huge ship, swirling black vapors moved beneath it, and she whistled low at the sight of it.

“Hope he ain’t talking about that thing, I wouldn’t know what to do with it. Beautiful design though.”

“Nope.” His voice came from behind her, and she turned.

“Come on, we can talk inside.” She led him into the hangar, where her ship sat inside, walking around it to climb a set of stairs. The apartment he was led into was comfortably furnished, and she motioned to the couch, taking the chair in front of it.

“Okay, so what’s this about. And who’s ship is that?”

“Technically, mine. I need a personal pilot. I don’t trust any of them.”

She frowned, knitting her brows. “Pardon.”

Riddick slowly told the events since she had last seen him. She sat there in silence, taking it in.

“So you’re now the big hooha for these guys? And because you don’t trust them, you want me to come and hang out, piloting a ship for you when you want me too? Is that what you’re saying?” When he nodded, she sighed. “And if I don’t like it there?”

“You come back here.”

She sat silently, looking out the small window that was behind the chair. She wasn’t too sure about this. It would mean being around a lot of people, but if he was right, they weren’t quite the same as normal people. It would mean flying though, and that was something she enjoyed a great deal. And he needed someone to support him, to be on his side when nobody else there would be. That was what sealed it for her, she’d been there, with no support, she wouldn’t let someone else do that.

“Okay, I will. When do we leave?”

“You’ll be picked up in the morning.”

She nodded and watched him leave, laying down to get a few hours sleep before she had to be ready.

The next morning she gave her ship over to Sam for her to hold onto. “Not sure if or when I’ll be back, you know how to take care of it, so treat her right.”

“You got it Kylie. I hope you like the new job. Good luck.”

A large man wearing body armor stepped into the hangar. “Which one of you is Kylie?”

With a raised eyebrow, Kylie picked up her bag. “I am….where’s Riddick?”

“The Lord Marshall has been detained. He sent me to get you in his place.”

She turned and hugged Sam. “Okay, I’m ready. Got a name?”

“Vaako.”

“Well Vaako, lets go.”

He led her across the field behind the hangar, and into a waiting transport ship. He led her on board, after she had a few moments to examine the outside of the ship. She had to admire the design, the efficiency of its shape and design.

Once they were settled in the ship, she set her bags down, and was shown around by Vaako.

“He told me that since you are to be his personal pilot, you are to be given the rundown of the workings of the ship. The one you will be using is similar in design, though considerably smaller.”

“I see. A hands on ship?”

“If that is what you and the Lord Marshall request, yes.”

She nodded, finding a place to sit. “You don’t like him, do you?”

Vaako paused, and looked at her. “I do not…like him…you are correct. I do, however, respect his strength, and am loyal to him as our leader.”

She nodded slightly, then closed her eyes, though she didn’t fall asleep. She was, therefore, not startled when Vaako called her.

“If you wish to see Necropolis, we are approaching now.”

She stood and crossed over to where Vaako stood before a view screen. The airborne thing she looked upon was huge, surrounded by smaller ships, all of them with the same black swirling vapors around their bases. She was even more amazed upon exiting the ship and seeing that what she had at first thought was a large ship, was indeed a space bound city.
