Chapter Five: Talk About the Passion
Chapter Five: Talk About the Passion

The morning sunshine filtered through the skylights above and dappled his sleeping form with a golden light. Kayla watched him with a sleepy, satisfied smile. They hadn't gotten much sleep, having taken turns waking one another throughout the night to make love; not that she minded in the least.
She sent a wordless caress to his mind, and his eyes fluttered open. Seeing her beside him, he smiled and reached for her, pulling her close. "So it wasn't a dream, after all," he whispered, kissing her softly. "I was almost afraid it might have been." He released her and sat up. "Damn, I do not want to go to lessons today."
"What time do you have to go?" She rubbed her eyes and yawned. "I have to get ready for a meeting with the Council later this morning to go over some research assignments that I've finished."
He looked at the chronometer on the nightstand and cursed. "Ah, sithspit! I'm due there in 10 minutes; I need to hurry up. Although I'd much rather spend the day with you than with Master Jinn…" his voice trailed off hopefully.
"Not a chance, padawan," she chuckled, kissing him. "You're not getting in trouble on my account. Besides, I have to get going myself. I should be back in my office by this afternoon, if you want to find me. You'd better use the 'fresher first, and alone, or neither or us will be leaving here anytime soon." She grinned at him and got out of bed, stretching.
//What do you mean, `if' I want to find you? Of course I'll be there.//
//Oh, love, I didn't mean it that way. I'm not all the way awake yet, that's all.//
Obi-Wan smiled and breathed a sigh of relief. "Okay, then. I'm off to shower and then I've seriously got to run if I'm to be on time for Master Jinn."
"Speaking of whom, we need to talk with him. Soon."
He nodded. "Tonight. And I think I'd rather if we talked with him together, if that's alright with you."
"Absolutely. We can plan it out further later this afternoon." //And get dressed in the bathroom, so I'm not tempted past my ability to resist.// she thought with a chuckle, tossing the bundle of his clothing at him as he walked away.
After he'd left the apartment, she showered quickly and dressed to meet with the Council. She knew she'd have to guard her thoughts even more closely than usual to avoid inadvertently broadcasting how head-over-heels in love she was, and so spent several extra minutes meditating before she felt confident enough with her shielding before leaving.
**
It hadn't been easy, but she'd managed to keep her thoughts hidden throughout the entire Council session. Only Master Windu had noticed something unusual, but after her years as his padawan, he knew her well and was able to read her as few others could. He'd merely commented that she appeared to be in a very good mood; she'd nodded her agreement with his assessment, and it had been left at that.
//Obi-Wan..?// she sent a thought questing for him as she returned to her office.
His response was almost immediate, as if he'd been waiting for her to contact him. //Here, love. I'm on my way to sparring practice. How was your meeting?//
The touch of his mind on hers relaxed her, and she felt muscles relax that she hadn't even been aware she'd been clenching. //Umm…It was a meeting.// She sent a yawn along the bond, and got an answering chuckle from him. //Aside from Master Windu telling me I looked particularly happy, and the rest of the Council liking what I had to say about the new saber specs I've been working on, it was pretty uneventful. I was just thinking about you, and wondering how your day has been going.//
//I'm fine; my biggest problem is keeping a damned idiot smile off my face. I love you, Kayla.//
She grinned as she walked, earning her a strange look from a small group of younglings who were passing by. //I love you too, and now I have a 'damned idiot smile' on *my* face. Thanks!//
Her mirth colored the thought-sending and he laughed. //So do I, once again.//
//So when can I expect to see you?// She reached her office and opened the door.
//I should get finished here in a few hours. I'll find you after that.//
//Alright. See you later.// She sent a mental caress to him before breaking the link to settle in her desk chair, picking up a datapad to enter the reports they'd sorted the night before.
**
She was deep in concentration when she heard someone clearing their throat a few steps away from her, and looked up with a start. "Master Jinn! You scared me half to death!"
He laughed and pulled up a chair, sitting facing her. "That must be something good you've got on that datapad. I only knocked twice and called out your name before walking in."
"Actually, it is some pretty interesting stuff, the latest figures on the new lightsaber calibration modules that I was talking about in the meeting this morning. I must have been so wrapped up in what I was doing that I didn't hear you." She smiled wryly. "I'm not usually that dense."
Qui-Gon nodded sagely. "That's two of you that have had your thoughts preoccupied today. Obi-Wan had an unusually difficult time concentrating on his lessons this morning." He raised an eyebrow. "I was wondering if you might be able to enlighten me as to the reason behind his woolgathering."
Her calm and her shields held. "He said something last night about you having told him I had sent for him. I don't recall that as having been part of our conversation yesterday."
His eyes twinkled with mischief as he took a seat. "Well…not exactly. But I thought it might be good for you both to spend some time together. Did I do the wrong thing?"
She smiled, blushing despite her best efforts not to do so. "Only if you consider the consequences of your actions to be a problem. I am sure your padawan would have been his usual attentive self at lessons this morning if you hadn't decided to play matchmaker."
He nodded. "Touché. One point for Master Silar'rian."
"The three of us need to talk, Qui-Gon. You may have gotten more than you'd bargained for," she said, getting serious. "There is more to it that you need to know."
"Oh?" He raised one eyebrow inquisitively.
She got up and walked to the door, shutting it, and returned to her chair. "I'd have preferred if the three of us could have discussed this together, but you're here now and there's no time like the present, as Master Windu always says." She sighed and continued, "As Obi-Wan's Master, you have the right and authority to consent to or forbid your padawan's course of actions."
He nodded again. "Let me guess. He thinks he's in love with you."
She snorted. "What in blazes is that supposed to mean, he `thinks'? He's not a child, you know." Far from it, she thought, remembering the previous night.
"Now, Kayla, it was just a figure of speech. Calm down." Qui-Gon started to rise from his chair.
She sighed, rubbing her forehead where a headache was beginning to form. "It's…more complicated than that. It's not just him, it's both of us, and there's no `thinks' to it."
He raised both eyebrows now. "Ah. I see. And undoubtedly something of the sort would not be condoned by the Council." He shook his head. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to cause any difficulties."
"We thought you rather deserved a thank you, actually," she smiled. "Apology accepted, but not necessary."
He met her gaze. "That being said, I don't have any problem at all with this staying between the three of us. It's not the Council's business unless it interferes with either of your ability to perform as a Jedi, and I believe I know you both well enough to have complete confidence that nothing of the sort will happen."
She breathed a sigh of relief, releasing a breath she'd not been aware she'd been holding. "Thank you. You have my word that I would sooner end the relationship than see it compromise the Order, or our honor."
He stood and walked to the door, opening it. "I'll discuss this with Obi-Wan when he returns after dueling practice. And if anyone asks why you're spending so much time with my padawan…we'll just say that you are tutoring him in Barkheshian, in which he happens to be abysmal. Seeing as how you've spent several years on the planet, you of course were my first choice to assist with this problem." He winked at her and left the office.
