Thanks to my editors/beta reader Souderwan.

To my readers: I know I take forever to update, but RL keeps me from writing very often. That and it takes a while to get edits done.
I do appreciate everyone sticking with the story though. I hope you will continue to do so.
Thanks for reading, and enjoy.

Death, Betrayal, & Alliances Part 2, Section 2

Shala scanned and assessed the scene before her. It was pure, bloody chaos. She had been on a limited few military engagements during the Clone Wars, but none were as brutal and horrific as this. It was definitely a sign that clan leadership, and the treaties, were falling apart.

Dabiku men, women, and children were being dragged from their homes and slaughtered by men wearing garments of the Fenyang clan. Many of the village of Gisozi were trying to escape, but with limited success.

“Well, this should prove to be an interesting evening.” Shala quipped as she brought her lightsaber to life and let the Force flow through her to ready herself for the battle.

“Really?” Kandahar glanced at Shala with a sly smile as she pulled two daggers from the sheaths attached to the belt on her waist.

Shala smiled for a brief moment and then focused her complete attention on the battle around them. Through the currents of the Force, she sensed each blaster bolt and attacker that came within range of them, deflecting both easily. A keen sense of observation aided in avoiding the many bodies littered along their path. She widened her Force awareness of other life forms around her to focus on Raina’s presence. Shala was slammed hard with total terror from her padawan and then realized that she was on the move.

“Kandahar! The children are trying to flee!” Shala yelled. “We need to move out in the direction of where we entered the village!”

“Very well,” Kandahar panted in response, worry in her voice evident. “We have to reach them before any of those attacking clansmen.”

An instant later, two men wielding machetes came at them from Kandahar’s direction. Shala’s blade slashed through the neck of one man, while she heard a groan elicited from the second man. The Jedi turned to see a fallen Kandahar push the man off of her as she retrieved a dagger that she had apparently plunged into the man’s heart. Her hands and clothing were covered with blood.

Shala reached out a hand to help the other woman back to her feet. “Are you injured?”

“Just my pride, and well, a perfectly good traveling outfit.” Kandahar replied as she attempted to clean the blood from her light brown hands.

Shala’s steel grey eyes met with Kandahar’s brown ones for a moment. “Are you sure you’re all right?”

Kandahar looked away as if to search for other attackers coming near to them. The Jedi could feel the fear that Kandahar was attempting to conceal and control. “It is not the first time I’ve had to kill someone, and from the looks of it, it will not be the last”, She paused for a moment, breathing deeply, “Let’s just find the children quickly and leave this place.”

Shala nodded in acknowledgment and searched through the Force for the best means of a quick escape. “I believe this way is the least dangerous route.” pointing to their left.

“You lead, Jedi.”

As she began to lead them to safety Shala felt Raina through the Force. The child was emotionally numb. She could only hope that some feelings of comfort could reach the child, and that neither Raina nor the boys were actually injured.

The fighting on the way out of the village was intense and Kandahar realized with a heavy heart that she was correct in her assessment that she would kill again. She had either severely injured or killed at least ten men that came within her reach in the moments it took to leave the village. She also witnessed the deaths of many of the villagers along the way.

The two women entered a clearing and saw the jungle area just a field’s distance away. Looking to see if anyone followed them they started running. Suddenly, they spotted something moving around in the brush. As they approached Iseal shot out into the clearing directly in front of them. Her heart pounding with a mix of relief and panic Kandahar rushed to her son, grabbing him in a quick embrace before searching his body for signs of injury.

“Are you all right? Have you been injured? Where’s Ibrim and Raina?”

“I’m fine. We’re not hurt,” He looked around. “Ibrim is hiding with Raina in the brush.” The boy’s brown eyes widened in horror for a moment as he looked at his mother up close, blood covering over her clothes and face. “Are you all right, mother?”

Tears stung Kandahar’s eyes as she hugged her son again, relieved that he was not injured. “Yes, my son. I am not injured. This blood is not mine.”

Iseal’s expression relaxed as he turned to look at Shala. “After all that Jedi training you gave Raina, she freaked out. Screamed so loud the whole village probably heard her.” He laughed and looked as if he was about to say something else when he noticed the scowl on his mother’s face. He managed an impish smile and continued, “She managed one wicked Force push against this one man trying to come at us, though.”

Shala gave Iseal an irritated look for a moment before moving into the dense brush. “Raina has never seen battle up close before. Her world was rather peaceful compared to this one; and what she has seen until now, has been nothing like the things we’ve witnessed tonight.”

A moment later Ibrim stepped out of hiding with Raina. Shala knelt down and began looking the child over, just as Kandahar hugged her other son.

“Mother?”

Kandahar shook her head already knowing the question on his mind. “I’m fine, Ibrim. Are you and Raina alright?”

“Yes, we are just scared. What happened? Why are the clans attacking other clans?”

Kandahar gathered her composure and tried to conceal the fear and anger she felt about the attack that threatened to fill her voice. She did not wish to frighten the child anymore than he was, but he needed to understand the situation.

“I believe that with your father and the other clan leaders ruling from hidden locations, order is falling apart. The clans used to fight each other before. The Dabiku and Fengyang used to be enemies many years ago. It would seem they still have unresolved issues.”

Ibrim nodded as he appeared to understand. “It… it’s only going to get worse, isn’t it?”

“I’m afraid so.”

Kandahar then turned her attention to Raina. Shala had begun trying to clean the blood off the child and was attempting to ask her questions; none of which Raina would answer. The child’s eyes were glassy and she didn’t really seem to register what was happening.

“She’s gone into shock. I can’t get through to her, right now.” The Jedi looked over to Kandahar and then to Ibrim. “What happened to her, Ibrim?”

“A man beheaded a woman right in front of us and then turned to attack us. She managed to Force push him away, but it seemed instinctive. She’s been in a state of shock since then. I had to carry her most of the way out of the village.” He fidgeted in place for a moment. “She hasn’t said much, just cried a lot. I’m really glad you found us and you’re both alright.”

Ibrim then threw his arms around Shala and hugged her eliciting a rather shocked look from the Jedi. Kandahar allowed herself a smile at the warm moment before turning to look back towards the village.

“Is Raina well enough to travel? I do not believe this is a safe place to make camp for the night.”

“I agree.” Shala answered as she stood releasing Ibrim and placing Raina’s hand in the boy‘s. “There is not much I can do for her right now. She’s comfortable with you and I need to keep on guard. Comfort her as much as you can. If you can control your own fear, it will help her control hers.”

Ibrim nodded in acknowledgement and took Raina’s hand, smiling reassuringly. “Let’s go sit down ‘til mother and Shala figure out where we are going, alright?”

Raina just looked up at him and nodded in apparent acknowledgement.

Shala looked to Kandahar as the children walked off to find a place to sit. “Where do we go from here?”

Kandahar knitted her brow in deep thought. After a moment she looked at the Jedi. “I think we should get to Karusk and find some faster transport to Kestra. I know it’s risky, but it’s going to be more dangerous to travel by foot with the clans warring with one another. Unfortunately, it means no rest as it will take us most of the night to get there.”

“Very well. Let’s get going.” She nodded over at the children. “I hope they can make the trek. It has been a while since they have slept.”

Ibrim stood and straightened to his full height. “We’ll make it.” He pulled Raina up with him and gave Iseal a look as if to say ‘keep quite and come on‘.

Kandahar took the lead once more with the children in the middle and Shala bringing up the rear, as they silently began their trek back through the dense vegetation with only the moonlight to guide them.
