Chapter 5: Whispered voices at my ear(got the name from a evanesence song so no suein!!)

“Abby sweetie, it’s time to wake up.” Misty said as she leaned over the bed to get closer to her face. Abby’s eyes slowly fluttered open, her mind still clouded with sleep. “You need to learn how to wake yourself up sweetheart. I’m not going to be here forever to do it for you.”

“I know Misty. I just had a long night.” Abby replied without thinking. Her mind instantly woke up and she looked about frantically at her room. There was no sign that Jack had even been there. She let out a sigh of relief and sank back into her bed.

“Child, it is Sunday. The Reed’s have to go to church in three hours and if you don’t wake Isabelle up now they will be late.” Misty scolded. She quickly walked over to the bed and threw the covers back. Abby let out a small whine but did indeed climb out of bed and change into her work dress. When she came back out from behind her curtain Misty had already left to continue on her own chores, leaving Abby to do her share. She left her room after she finished dressing and made her way to Isabelle’s room.

“Did you hear any ruckus last night Abby? I could hardly sleep with all that noise. Do you know what it was?” Isabelle asked as Abby was lacing her corset. A small smile found its way to Abby’s lips but she kept her voice firm.

“Yes I heard it, but I was never able to find out what it was.” She replied. Isabelle nodded her head and took in a short breath when Abby pulled harder on the laces.

“Do we have to go through this everyday? Not so tight Abby.” She whined.

“Sorry ma’am my mind was elsewhere.” Abby replied as she let the laces loosen a little. When they finished they made their way into the dining room, continuing the daily routine. When Isabelle and her father finished dinner they walked to the nearby church and went to mass. Abby waited patiently outside, sitting on the bench outside the grand doors. She had gone to mass a couple times but was never able to focus. She often found herself daydreaming, or making up a list of what she needed to do before that night. When she was outside though, her mind would clear up and she would just enjoy the breeze or simply listen to the birds. When mass finished they made their way back to the mansion. Albert tried to talk Isabelle into going to town but she felt the sun was too bright and the day would be better spent indoors. Luckily for Abby, that meant she was not needed for a good two hours time and was free to do what she wanted. She didn’t hesitate to go to town and purchase some new ribbons. The town was surprisingly dead. Only a few people walked through the normally busy streets. Most merchants did not put up their stands today, it being Sunday and all. After Abby finished getting ribbons she knew she should start to head back to the mansion. It was almost time for Isabelle’s bath and she just had to have Abby there to help her. But Abby still didn’t want to be back at the mansion so she decided to take the long way around. The docks were full like always. She could even see ships coming into port. Abby looked to her right, at the path that led to the side of the mansion. She let a small smirk creep to her face as she once again decided against going back so soon. She ran off in the opposite direction, away from the docks and to the beautiful beach. She took of her shoes and held them in her right hand as she continued on her way. The sand sliding in between her toes, it was so soft to the touch yet coarse if it got in the wrong places.

“Wats a purdy lass goin’ so far away from the town for eh?” A deep voice asked from behind her. She let out a shriek as she turned around. The man was tall and muscular. His hair was a light brown with blonde highlights. His body was tanned from working long days in the hot sun. Abby’s body stiffened immediately, her blue eyes went wide as her deepest fear was turning into reality right before her.

“Ya didn’ answer me. Wat you doin’?” The man asked again with an angrier tone.

“I w-was ab-bout to go back. P-please forgive me sir, I didn’t mean to intrude.” Abby replied shakily.

He is going to kill you.

Abby heard the voice but didn’t pay it any mind. She was totally focused on the man before her.

“Do I kno’ ya lassy?” The man asked. His brows furrowed as he searched his brain for any type of memory. She seemed vaguely familiar, yet the familiarity was like a nightmare. He felt rage and anger when he looked at her. He couldn’t explain it, but he still didn’t like it at all. He has felt this way a few times before when he was around a certain woman. He could still remember everything about her. As if she haunted him. Haunted him for what he did to her.

“No s-sir I don’t believe y-you do.” She stuttered in reply. The man just looked back at her blankly. She could tell he was deep in thought about something else, but she was taking completely by surprise when he turned around and went back the same way he came, leaving without a word. Abby didn’t understand. He was about to attack her two minutes ago, and now he is leaving without even a fight.

You weren’t worth even his trouble.

The voice taunted. She shook her head and leaned down to put her shoes back on.

“I’m glad I wasn’t.” She said under her breath. She walked quickly back to the mansion, making sure to stay clear of the servants path. She walked to the front door and made her way inside. She could hear some conversation from the study and went to see who it was. She recognized Albert’s voice first, and then she heard Commodore Norrington. She leaned closer to the door; something deep within her gut told her their conversation was important. She couldn’t make out what they were saying and grew frustrated quickly. She eventually gave up and walked to Isabelle’s room. She knocked quietly on the door and asked for permission to enter.

“Where have you been Abby? I’ve been waiting for you for at least half an hour.” Isabelle said in her slightly raised voice. She was never allowed to yell or she would get in trouble from her father. Yet every time he tried to scold her she managed to talk her way back out of it.

“Sorry ma’am I lost track of time.” Abby replied as she walked into the side room to prepare the bath.

“You seem to be doing that a lot lately Abby.” Isabelle said in an irritated voice. Abby looked up from the tub, but couldn’t hold the stare and quickly looked back down.

You weren’t worth his time, but she isn’t worth your time.

Abby shut her eyes tightly, pushing the voice into the back of her mind. It hasn’t bothered her for months. Why is it coming back now?

“Abby hurry up, oh wait... was your mind elsewhere?” Isabelle mocked.

Just do it, she deserves it. You listened when you were with Jack. Why ignore me now?

Abby shook her head and stood on her feet.

“I think it would be best ma’am if you got someone else to help you with this.” Abby said. “I’ll go call up another maid.” She left the bedroom quickly and yelled for someone else to help Isabelle. She had to get out of there before she did something she would regret. She left the mansion but didn’t dare go too far. She may not have gotten attacked earlier but that man still had time to come back and try again. She walked to the front gates and leaned on the fence. There was a slight breeze that blew her long brown hair away from her face. There were no other sounds no crickets, owls, or laughter from town that she could hear. She leaned forward a little more and looked around the road.

“Something is wrong.” She whispered to herself.

There is always something wrong around you.

“No, that is not true.” She replied to the voice.

Then how do you explain your life. Everything revolves around failure.

Abby shook her head and leaned back, wrapping her arms around her body as if protecting herself.

You can’t deny it.

She shut her eyes and prayed for the voice to leave her alone. “I’m not a failure. I didn’t ask for this life.” She whispered back.

Oh but you are.

“No I’m not.” She shouted back. She sank to the ground and held her knees to her chest. She was able to keep the voice away for five months. Things started getting better, and then it comes back. She sat there for many minutes, trying to get hold of her own mind. She could feel it slipping out of her grasp. She knew she was able to control it but couldn’t figure out how she did it.

You should have just taken care of her then and there. You missed yet one more opportunity.

“I wouldn’t do that to anyone.” She shouted back.

We will see.

“I will not do that to anyone.” She muttered to herself. She stayed out well past midnight, fighting with herself. When the voice didn’t say anything for a good half hour she decided it would be safe to go back into the mansion. Everyone was already in bed. She made sure to make no noise as she made her way to her bedroom. It was exactly how she left it this morning… messy. She changed out of her work dress and slipped on her nightgown. She crawled into her bed and pulled the covers close to her body. Sleep didn’t come quickly. Instead she laid in bed, fighting for control. When her eyes finally fluttered closed she knew she had won the battle for the night. But the voice was still in the back of her mind constantly whispering in her ear.

We will see.
