Chapter 5

The trip back to the ship took longer than expected, her swaggering in the wrong direction and bouts of dizziness slowed her down greatly. She finally came to the dock and smiled to herself. She knew she had to do it, had to sort this out because her and Jack would just keep hurting each other if not. She boarded the Black Pearl and set off in the direction of Jack's cabin, giving little thought to anything else other than what she planned to say. She ran over it in her mind over and over
"Jack, I'm sorry for everything. Please forgive me?" There. Simple and easy, thats all it would take. Hopefully. She reached the cabin door and hesitantly pulled back. Now that she was here it seemed alot more daunting. Jack could be drunk, he may not want to see her. Hell! He may not even be here. She shook her head slightly and tried to hold herself upstraight. It was now or never. She took a deep breath and pushed at the door with all her weight.

Jack was sat at his table, leaning over some maps. He wasn't plotting anything, he wasn't even looking at the maps. He was brooding. What have I done to deserve this? I've never done anything to hurt her, and she...she treats me like dirt. She never acknowledges me existance and even when she notices me she ignores me anyway! Yet, why cant I stay angry at her? Because I...because...I care for her. She saved me from World's end. She's helped me in battles, laughed at me jokes, shown an interest in me. That's why. Jack continued to think to himself, tried to concerntrate on something other than Lizzie, but he just couldn't! A sudden noise behind him made him instinctively grab his pistol and turn. He looked in shock, not really sure what he was expecting. But it wasn't this: Lizzie sprawled on the floor.

Lizzie pushed at the door with all her might, as though she expected it to be glued shut. Unfortunately, the door swung open easily and she fell through it in a very unladylike fashion, landing in a heap on the floor. She looked up to see Jack staring at her, wearing an expression identicle to that of being hit over the head with an oar. Lizzie smiled happily, glad that she atleast had his attention. Oh yeah, its me thats been avoiding him. She got up to her feet unsteadily, to find Jack still staring at her nervously. She began to walk over to him, swaggering more than usual from the amout of rum. Jack seemed to take a step back and Lizzie decided it was probably best not to get too close.

"Jack, I...I'm sorrrrrrrrrrryyy....I reallly ammm" She gasped, her words sounded even more slurred and she cursed herself. Atleast try to act sober! Jack just stared at her for a moment before finally opening his mouth to speak

"Sorry for what exactly Lizzie?" He needed to hear her say it.

"I....I....for everythinggg!" What am I sorry for? Damn Lizzie, so much for having this conversation all planned out and in order!

"You're drunk" Jack stated clearly and just looked at her, shocked. What was she planning to do? Come in here and break my heart into smaller pieces?

"Maybe a little bit, but weee need to talk Jack" Making an extra effort to stand up straight she looked him square in the eyes.

"Yes we do Elizabeth" She flinched slightly at the fact he was using her proper name, not a good sign at all.
"Whats been up with you lately? First you kiss me, and run out without any excuse or reason. Then avoid me and next thing I know you're running through Tortuga docks to avoid me. And then, I see you with another man" His voice was calm and he looked casual but his eyes were alight with hurt.

"I... I wasn't Jack" She began, but tears began rolling down her cheeks. She brushed them away with the back of her hand. "Me and Dave were just talking, I needed abit of space."

"So you find comfort in other mens' kisses and chats but when it's me you flinch and back away?" She opened her mouth but no words came out.
She didn't know what to say for once in her life.

"I...I don't find comfort in other men, and I don't back away with you talk to me."

"Yes you do! You've been avoiding me ever since you kissed me! Why? You were the one who started that, or do you just like playing games with me? You're happy to jump into bed with that whelp in the tavern but when it comes to me you avoid me like the plague!" Elizabeth just stood there and stared at him in disbelief. She had no words left and didn't know what to do. She let the silence enfold them and they both just stared at each other. Her heart was banging and his heart was aching, neither knowing what to think.

"Jack....this conversation isn't going anywhere, we'll both sleep it off and we'll have a proper chat tomorrow?" She stared at him questioningly and he nodded in agreement before turning his back to her. She left the cabin, neither of them noticing the others tears falling.
