Goodbye
It was just as well Jack was leaving. Molly’s father would be home in a matter of a few days... or hours if the weather continued fair. And she did not want to have to explain the pirate’s presence.
Still, these sensible thoughts could not stop the lump in her throat from forming as he kissed her goodbye. He wore his old clothes (Molly had washed and mended them) as well as a decent cloak (provided once again by her father’s outgrown wardrobe). A small knapsack containing food and an extra blanket hung over his shoulder.
“You didn’t have to, luv...” Jack said awkwardly, indicating the sack.
“I know..” Molly swallowed to keep her voice steady and cheerful. “And revenge is best served cold but you don’t need to go overdoing it.”
Jack gave a light laugh and turned to go. Molly watched him walk away. Suddenly he turned back and ran to her, a look of excitement in his eyes.
“Hey, Molly! You know you ought to come with me... be part of the crew... once I get my ship back?”
Molly smiled at him gently. “I can’t, Jack. It would break father’s heart to come home and find me gone.”
Jack nodded slowly, sadness betrayed in his eyes. “Right...” He coughed, “Right you are, luv. I’ll be going then.” This time he did not glance back as he walked away.
Molly turned away, wiping her eyes slightly but then a smile played at the corners of her mouth as she looked back at the docks and saw a shabby once-red ship sailing in their direction.
“Welcome home, father....”
