Learning the Past
Hours later Pogue and Tyler were sitting in Mr. Simms house. They both were wondering why they had been called there. He knew that their friends were in the hospital, and it was important that they be there. Tyler was happy when Mr. Simms entered the room because now whatever he wanted he could tell them, and they could get back to the hospital.
“Dad, what is this all about?” Tyler asked him.
“Dude you know I just noticed that you and your dad have the same last name as one of our teachers.” Pogue joked, not really caring about being there.
They ignored him.
“This is about the bloodline, which is weakening as we speak.” he told them.
“What do you mean?” Pogue asked him who was now interested in what he had to say.
“Yeah dad how would you know anything about how strong the bloodline was, you gave up your powers.”
Tyler was right; his dad’s powers were gone. He knew a long time ago, after seeing what happened to Caleb’s dad, that he didn’t want to end up like that, so he stripped himself of his powers. One thing he did retain was the power to sense the power level of the blood line, and he knew it was weakening.
“There are still certain passive powers I have that you don’t know about, and I know because of recent events,” he turned in Pogue’s direction,” the line has weakened greatly.”
“What!”
“Don’t what me Pogue I know you and Reid fought each other.”
“I had to Mr. Simms, he was under a spell and he was trying to kill me!” he explained.
“Yes I know, but the recent events along with the attack by Chase, has caused the bloodline to weaken in power, and without it you won’t be able to defeat the others that are trying to kill you.”
“Wait a minute why would Chase even matter and what others?” Pogue asked. He was extremely confused now.
Mr. Simms sighed. “Even though Chase tried to kill you he still was apart of the bloodline, and by him turning to the dark side it weakened.”
The boys looked at him with more confusion; they didn’t understand how a couple of squabbles between each other could cause such a rift in their powers. They also thought that their powers were independent of each other. They never would have thought that they were that dependent on one another.
He sighed. He stopped talking and walked over to his book case. He grabbed a book and placed it in front of the boys. It was the Book of Damnation. He sat down and began to flip through it until he reached the page that he was looking for.
“How did you get that?” Pogue asked, shocked to see it there
He ignored him and turned the book around to face the boys. “See this is what you get for not reading about the history of your ancestors, I told you one day that you would regret it. Now one of you read...aloud!” he demanded.
“Centuries ago there were five different men from five different families,” Tyler began, “these five men possessed great power and used the power to protect themselves from many threats. It-“
“Wait I have never seen that in the book before.” Pogue interrupted.
“Pogue it’s been years since you have read the book, and you know the book adds things. That’s why I always told you to read it.” Mr. Simms told him. “Continue Tyler.”
“It is said that when the covenant was formed each member formed a pact to work together as one, no matter the difference, and form a vow of silence to protect the covenant from enemies. It was done and the Ipswich colony became quite powerful defeating many foes both witch and human. The Ipswich covenants became one of the strongest covenants. During the battles over territories which happened every fifty years, they defeated many foes.”
“Wait, how long did they live?” Pogue asked.
“At that time they lived to be well over two hundred years old, but that changed, continue Tyler.” said Mr. Simms.
“It says that a hundred years later when the five men were in their late hundreds, when another territorial battle was looming, one of the men of the covenant became hungry for power, the oldest of the five. He began to commit personal gain acts as well as other dark acts, and he began to get seduced by the power. It wasn’t long before he aged and looked as if he had been through many centuries. Over the months his lust for power grew and grew until he began to kill others for their power once they ascended. It wasn’t long before he turned his eye towards his own covenant and attacked them. After he was defeated the covenant picked the youngest of the bloodline to banish him, which he did. The remaining four thought that the nightmare was over, but because of the evil the oldest had done, and because they were linked by their pact, they were all cursed. They were cursed to be seduced by the power and everytime it was used they would age. Their extended life was also stripped. With the oldest gone, they lost their territory for fifty years, but gained it back. That’s all it says.” Tyler told them.
“Let me see that.” said Pogue.
Tyler was a little hesitant to let Pogue read the book because what if it had re-added the pages torn out by Chase. What if it told that the youngest of the five was the true leader?
Tyler looked at his father who nodded his head letting Tyler know that it was okay for him to read. He wondered if his dad knew that the information about him wouldn’t be in there, or was it that it would and it was time to find out. After all between the secrets and the fights going on between them the bloodline was in trouble, according to his father.
“But we have used our powers quite a bit and-“
“The rules have been lessened since then, mainly because none of you born of the original four committed any evil acts. Your powers are allowing to grow and your life is extending, but that will mean nothing if you lose this battle. You have to save Reid, and mend the rift between each of you.”
“Okay so who are these others that we have to fight Mr. Simms, I am really not in the mood to read.” he asked as politely as he could. He wasn’t trying to be rude, but he wanted to get back to Kate.
“Apparently there are two covenants, much like the Ipswich covenant and they are out to kill you. If they do that they gain control over this territory.
“Does that mean that the two covenants are also at war with each other?” Tyler wondered.
“Yes. You see son there are many covenants, each given a territory that the other must respect. But ever so often, usually every fifty years, as the book said, the rule is allowed to break and a fight can ensue for the territory. If that particular covenant defeats the covenant they are trying to destroy, they win the territory and become more powerful.”
“Man I need to read this book more often.” Pogue joked.
“It’s not funny Pogue; if you, Tyler, and the other boys don’t get it together you’ll die!” Mr. Simms scolded. “They have already made their first attacks. Reid is under their control, Caleb is lying in the hospital, you,” he pointed to Pogue, “are emotionally unstable, and you...” he turned to his son, “well you know your problems. You four have to get it together right now because in order to stop them it’s going to take all five of you.”
“Five, did you just say five?”
“Yes, in order to stop them, you will need Chase.”
“WHAT!” Pogue yelled, standing up quickly. “Are you insane after all he did to us!”
“Yes I know, but you will have to put feelings aside, if you want to live to see Christmas.”
“Screw that, besides he was killed!”
“No he just disappeared.” Tyler interjected. “A body was never found Pogue.”
“Look I don’t want that bastard in our lives, we will do this ourselves!” he yelled, stomping out of the room and slamming the door behind him.
Tyler and Mr. Simms sighed. Tyler could tell that his father was worried and he hated to see his father like that. His dad had done so much for him after his mother had left them. Tyler could remember how he felt so betrayed by the woman who claimed to love them both, but when she found out who and what they were, she left them. He wanted revenge, but his father told him that vengeance is not theirs to take. He told him that the pain would take a while to subside, but eventually he would be able to forgive her.
After a while he was able to and he felt this burden lift from his heart. He felt like he could move on without worrying about his mother, and he did. Tyler just focused on the positive, and not the negative.
“There was more in the book wasn’t there Tyler.” his father asked him, already knowing the answer.
“Yes dad, it was. I figured when it was torn out it would return.”
“I know how much you care for Chase. I also know about the love that has been shared between your ancestors for years, but you have to tell them everything, and I do mean everything.”
Tyler sighed. “I know, but they probably won’t believe it.”
“When you need the book it will come, trust me.”
“I do dad.” he chuckled.
Tyler realized that he needed to tell Chase all the information that he had learned, it was unsafe for him to be alone. He also knew that he was not going to let someone take the people he loved. He told his father that he would return, and not to worry.
“I will take care of all of this.” he promised him.
Tyler smiled and left the house.
His dad smiled as he left the room. He pulled the book to him and flipped to the page he was looking for. He began reading it and focused on a particular line which said, “And the youngest son shall lead them.” He knew that it was obviously Tyler.
