Chapter 5: Explanations and Revelations
Trey, Gibb, and Dr. Gordon (“Neil, please”) were situated in the front room, Trey and Gibb cradling small cans of beer, Neil sitting in an armchair, a faded notebook in his lap.
“Well, like Trey and I already discussed, I worked at Westin Hills in 1987. Um… We tried a drug called Hypnocil and the result put Joseph-your cousin, Gibb-in a coma which he eventually came from. Nonetheless, it cost me my job. What I discovered was that when the patients slept, they became stronger and different from what they were in real life.”
“Ok… How so?”
“Well, one patient was confined to a wheelchair and in his dreams he could walk and was some kind of wizard.”
“So, they would become magical?”
“In a sense, yes.”
“And you can do this, Trey?” He nodded and took a sip of his beer, wincing slightly as it went down his throat.
“In some dreams-not all-I can wield swords and am a fighter.” Neil nodded and handed him the folder. “Beautiful and bad? That would explain Tina.”
“Sorry?”
“Taryn’s twin.”
“Your sister had a twin?”
“Has. She’s still very much alive. Why?”
“Could she do anything?”
“I don’t know she never said.”
---
“I say we go to the cops.”
“No way! We can’t do that to my best friend!”
“Well, Gibb’s our best friend and now Trey has lost his marbles, taken her and is going god knows where.”
Round and round, thought Lori. Back and forth they went-to go to the cops or not to go to the cops-that was the question. Kia was all for it, but Blake was dead set against it.
“Well, what do you think, Lori?”
“Well, I think we should look through this” she answered, nodding toward the papers that Trey had tossed at them before leaving, Gibb in his arms. The three looked at it.
“Fine.”
“Yeah, ok.”
---
Neil sat next to Trey now, Gibb in the armchair. “Why did no one tell you Taryn had a twin?”
“I honestly do not know. But neither one of your parents mentioned it. Seems like the kind of thing they would.”
“Yeah. It does. I don’t know why Gibb hasn’t been able to access her powers.”
“Well, I think she has to know that she has the powers.”
“Like what? What can I do?”
“I don’t know. If you could do anything in your dreams that you knew you couldn’t do in real life, what would it be?”
“Anything?”
Neil nodded. “Sky’s the limit.”
---
“Some of this shit is really weird” said Kia, ruffling through the papers. Lori silently agreed. Pictures of a burned man with sharp claws, ripping into people, pictures of him and Gibb, but drawn in surrealistic ways. All were weird and few had writing and even those that did were so out-of-the-ordinary that one could not fully understand what it meant.
“What the hell is that?” Blake asked. It was yet another picture drawn and it showed Trey and Gibb on one side of the paper, the man with the claws on the other, and right in the middle was a very small heart.
“I have no idea.” They looked through more, nothing really making sense. Only one picture struck a nerve: one that resembled Will Rollins-Lori’s one true love.
