Chapter Five: Girl You Make It Hard To Be Faithful
***
Today was stormy. A little too stormy for it just being the end of summer and beginning of fall. It was windy and rainy outside of East High. None of the students would be eating out in the courtyard today.
“Class,” Ms. Darbus said after the bell rang. “I think most of you might enjoy hearing this news. Turns out that we have a new student who isn’t that new. I think you all would love to join me welcome back Gabriella Montez.”
Ryan’s eyes widened. The class cheered, happy to have their classmate back. Troy looked over at Ryan who did not look to happy. He didn’t look mad, more like worried. Troy shrugged and mouthed ‘I’m sorry’ to Ryan even though it wasn’t his fault. With everyone occupied talking to Gabriella Troy snuck up to the roof green house to meet Ryan.
“She’s back,” Ryan said.
“I know,” Troy sighed. “It was a surprise to me too. Are you going to be okay?”
“I don’t know,” Ryan said. “You said it yourself that you aren’t over her. Now you can have her back. Chances are she’ll take you.”
“We already talked about that Ry,” Troy said.
“And what?” Ryan almost neared tears, “You told her yes of course you’d like to be with her. You’re up here to end things with me. It’s not like people knew about it so it won’t matter.”
“Ryan,” Troy said angrily. “How can you possibly think of me as that kind of person? If I were going to break up with you I would have done it when I found out she was here last night. I told her I was with you and that she and I couldn’t get back together.”
“Oh,” Ryan got quiet.
“The point is Ryan,” Troy continued on his rampage. “If you think I’m the kind of person who would do that then what reason is there not to?”
“You are ending it aren’t you?” Ryan sighed.
“No,” Troy said. “I just need some time to think. I’ll call you when I figure things out. Or better yet, you call me when you figure out if you trust me or not.”
Troy ran down the stairs in his rage. A few minutes afterward the bell rang and Ryan headed to class.
“End it?” Sharpay stood up from behind some of the larger plants. “End what? A relationship… NO WAY! Ryan and Troy… are together…”

Once again, Troy was not doing well during basketball practice. When practice was over his friends Chad, Jason, and Zeke sat him down to talk.
“Troy,” Chad said. “What is up with you lately? You haven’t played well at all. And since Gabriella’s back you should be happy and playing fine. Didn’t you guys get back together?”
“No,” Troy was looking at the floor. He did not want to make eye contact with his friends.
“What?” Chad said, “How come? She was only gone for like two weeks.”
“I don’t want to talk about it,” Troy said.
“Well you need to,” Chad said. “We are your friends. You owe us an explanation.”
“He doesn’t want to talk about it,” Zeke snapped back at Chad. “He just said so. So let it go.”
“Clearly you know,” Chad said. “Or you wouldn’t be defending his want not to tell. I see how it is Troy. So much for being brothers. Guess we don’t share our problems with each other.”
“Shut up Chad,” Jason said. “You are just being baby. Sometimes people don’t want to share what’s going on. That’s life.”
“Oh okay,” Chad said. “I can tell that you three clearly have no care what I think. Guess it won’t matter to you if I just leave.”
Chad stomped off.
“Sorry man,” Zeke said. “He’s being way out of line.”
“Yeah,” Jason said. “You don’t have to tell us what’s wrong. But is there any way we can help?”
“No,” Troy finally looked up. “I have a lot of thinking to do I guess. It’s just taken over my brain and I’m having issues focusing on other things. I should go apologize to Chad.”
“Nah,” Zeke said. “Chad needs to apologize to you first for being a jerk. Then you can apologize for not telling him what’s going on.”
“I guess,” Troy sighed.
“Well man,” Zeke said. “Jason and I have to get to math project. So we’re going to get out of here. See you next week.”
“Later,” Troy sighed as his friends left. He had nothing to look forward to this weekend.
Troy headed home.

Chad sat in the library of East High on this Friday evening doing a little research before it closed. Unfortunately for him, or so he had thought, he had been paired up with Sharpay Evans for the project. With her busy schedule he had to work on the project on a Friday night instead of another night during the week. When he finished getting his information he headed over to the Evans Household.
“Hello,” Sharpay said answering the door. “I guess we’d better get this over with.”
“I’m not happy about working with you either Sharpay,” Chad said as they entered the den of her house.
“I’m not unhappy to work with you Chad,” she said. “I am actually very happy I get to work with you.”
“Oh,” Chad was confused. “Why’s that?”
“Just because,” Sharpay laughed. “I just don’t want to do this project. So let’s get something to snack on before we start. We can catch up a little.”
Chad was again confused. Catch up? Why would they need to catch up? It’s not like they were good friends or anything.
“So how’s Taylor?” Sharpay asked.
“Mad,” Chad said. “I blew her off for this project. We’re taking a break right now I guess. She needs a week or two to cool off I guess. Women.”
“That’s too bad,” Sharpay said.
“What about you and Zeke?” Chad asked.
“Zeke?” A look of disgust came over her face, “We were never really together Chad. He is so immature. I can barely be around him.”
“Guess we both aren’t having luck in that department,” Chad said as they went back into the den with a bag of chips and some soda.
“We could,” Sharpay grinned rubbing Chad’s leg.
“What?” Chad stared at her hand on his leg. She came forward kissing him.

“What’s up Troy?” Gabriella said as she let him into her house. They headed up to her room and sat on her bed.
“I don’t know if I can do this,” Troy said.
“Do what?” Gabriella asked.
“Be with Ryan,” he continued. “I’m in love with you.”
“You…” Gabriella’s heart melted. “You love me? How come you never told me?”
“I was going to tell you,” Troy said. “I was going to but then you told me you were moving away. I was going to tell you that night.”
“I love you too Troy,” she said. “But you are with Ryan now. I guess you have a choice to make.”
“Yeah,” Troy said. “I want you.”
“Have you told Ryan that?” She asked him.
“No,” Troy said. “I don’t know how to. I’m the first person he’s ever dated. And it hasn’t even been that long.”
“Do you have feelings for him too?” She asked.
“I’m starting to,” Troy said. “But my feelings for you are already here and deep. How can I be in love with two people?”
“I don’t know,” Gabriella said. “You should think before you decide. Troy I love you, but if he makes you happy and you are starting to love him, you have to figure out which of us will make you happier.”
Troy sighed.
“No one is asking you to make this decision right away,” she said. “But you need to talk to Ryan about this. It’s not fair not to let him know where you are coming from. I am willing to wait until you figure it out.”
“Thank you,” Troy kissed her cheek. “For being so understanding.”
She smiled.

Sharpay and Chad continued to kiss instead of doing their math project.
“This is so weird,” Chad got out between their kisses.
“Why?” Sharpay pulled back.
“I thought you hated me,” he said. “I thought you hated us Wildcats.”
“I don’t hate you guys,” she said. “I just don’t want you invading my theater program. I’m not invading your basketball team.”
“You’re a girl,” Chad laughed. “So you can’t.”
“That’s true I guess,” she laughed back. “So what do you think?”
“About what?” Chad asked.
“About us?” Sharpay asked, “Do you think we should give this a shot?”
“Yeah,” Chad said. “But there’s Taylor.”
“We don’t have to be anything official,” Sharpay grinned. “You’re on a break so you can do what you want.”
“Good point,” Chad said.
“So how is this season going for you?” She said nuzzling up against him.
“It was going good,” he said. “Until Troy started sucking. And he won’t tell me what’s wrong with him.”
“I can tell you,” Sharpay said. “If you want to know that is.”
