Hope

Part V

Sarah moved relunctantly forward. The screaming stopped as suddenly as it had started. The dark twisting shadows also stilled. Sarah could feel her heart thudding frantically in her chest.

She paused on the brink of a revelation.

With Jareth behind her and the unknown up ahead Sarah suddenly felt like Ariadne trying to help Theseus. Maybe she shouldn't focus so much on modern fairy tales, but the myths that came before them.

In that story the Labyrinth was as much a dancing ground as a prison that entrapted all those who entered it and Ariadne did eventually become a goddess. The minotaur could either devour you or celebrate everything important about life.

And Theseus did eventually get through it with the help of Ariadne's winding thread. So maybe, if Sarah had been Theseus during her last try, she could become a theoretical Dionysius now.

So what thread was there for Sarah to grasp?

And she stopped. The Labyrinth was sick, as much because of her as because of Jareth. Jareth's change of mood was directly related to the events of her last visit. She could fix that. By the very fact that she was there, she had given him hope.

She closed her eyes and gathered all of her inner feelings for everything she had to give him as closely to the front of her mind as possible. She remembered everything she had thought through the last several years, her realizations and hopes and dreams. The maturity she had now, at this moment, was not the naivity of her younger self. She knew now what power she held over him who held this place. She hoped that her connection to this place through him would be enough to do what she hoped to do.

And something outside of her snapped.

Not that there was any actual noise in the action, but the place seemed to hummm with a sudden vibration of living that hadn't been there when she had walked through the gates a second time, but that had certainly overlaid everything the first time she had come. That had always been one of the things that she had subconsciously noticed her first journey through this place, the sheer force of life that permeated everything made the air nearly suffocating as she went through.

"What are you doing to me?!"

Her concentration broke to find that the Labyrinth was nolonger dark, but bathed in the breaking light of the dawn.

Jareth was on his knees in the red dust of the pathway looking stunned.

"Reminding you that I understand now." Sarah walked forward to stand directly in front of him, allowing his long arms to wrap themselves around her waist and for him to press his face tightly against her breasts. She wound her fingers through his wild hair, pulling his head back so that he had to look her in the eyes.

"No matter what happens, we'll both be getting what we really want." This time it was her who bent down and took his lips with hers and gave him a bruising kiss. This time it was him whose body went weak with desire.

This time she managed to slip out of his embrace and disapeared down another path before he could recover his own body's needs. His agonized cry followed her further into the depths of the maze.

As she went, she passed the clock, which showed that another hour had slipped away, but this time, hope went with her through the next part of the Labyrinth.
