What Happens In Gotham

Catching sight of Rachel and Harvey standing together Katarina couldn’t help but tease them a little. “I think I’m going blind. The power couple is too much to look at”
“Ha ha, very funny Katarina.” Rachel rolled her eyes at her newly acquired friend. She could help but feel a little jealous. The woman before her was stunning and graceful, nothing like the crude out spoken woman, who was still beautiful, that she knew.
“Take a joke Dawes. You look every beautiful.” Katarina laughed as Rachel struck a posse for her.
“As much as J.C and I love listening to you two mock fight we are going to be late to our own fundraiser.” Harvey stated.
“Don’t worry Harvey, Katarina said as they exited the apartment, what could possibly go wrong at a Bruce Wayne party?”
Oh The Irony.

Chapter Five: Shrimp Cocktails and Grand Entrances Part I
By the time the foursome arrived at the fundraiser it was already in full swing. A band played a soft but lively jazz melody, though no one danced; they preferred to mingle with plastic smiles welded to their faces.
The scantily dressed gold diggers had already attached themselves to every available wealthy, no to mention dying, business man they could find.
Katarina scanned the crowd for a familiar face but found none, not even the one she wished to whip the floor bloody with.
“Trust Bruce Wayne to be late to his own party” Katarina joked to Harvey who let out a small chuckle, Rachel simply rolled her eyes. Apparently this was nothing new to her.
A small but forceful tug at the fabric of her dress made Katarina look down to acknowledge her son.
“Mom they have shrimp! Can I go get some please” Jack turned on the charm as his big hazel eyes sparkled and his baby pink lips formed a pout.
Giggling at her son’s adorable face Katarina nodded and made a shooing motion as she said “Don’t move from there I’ll go get you later”
Jack sent her a pearly white smile as he raced to the cocktail table, nearly toppling a white haired gentle man who had been adjusting his glasses. Her son again turned on the charm as he gave the man an Oscar worthy heartwarming, if not heart felt, apology.
‘That little manipulator. Damn those Hazel eyes, can’t say no to them.’
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Seeing that her son was safely consuming his own body weight in shrimp Katarina turned her attention to Harvey and Rachel who were being interrogated by a short plum blonde with black roots. The woman’s dress was the exact shade of an Ump Lumpa’s skin, Katarina couldn’t help but notice the black of her camera stood out against it.
The seam starching blonde must have noticed Katarina’s shift in attention because she promptly introduced herself.
“Hello I’m Anita Seeker from the Daily Prophet. You must be Miss Katarina Napier Bruce Wayne’s newest friend” the woman’s shrill and nasal voice combined with her poorly covered jab at Katarina set on a chain of events.
First, Harvey and Rachel took two cautious steps backwards, from what they had seen of Katarina’s temper this situation promised to be a verbal bloodbath. They almost felt sorry for the irritating woman. Almost.
Second came Katarina’s venomous retort, “It’s Mrs. Napier actually. You must not be very good at your job if you don’t know that small fact!”
The horrified and more then a little insulted look on the nerve racking woman’s face was worth the pull at Kat’s heart string for another reminder that she was still Mrs. Napier, married to a memory she couldn’t let go.
“I feel sorry for your husband, does he know you’re here tonight looking like a harlot?” the insulted blonde replied.
Which wasn’t the smartest of choices?
“You impetuous bit--” Katarina’s word where censored and all around interrupted by the whirling sound of helicopter blades.
‘That is the second time that man has interrupted me’ the enraged police officer thought.
Anita Seeker took this interruption as her cue from good to get her ass out of the mine field she had created for herself. Making a hasty retreat from the black haired Amazon, whose brown eyes had looked at her with a promise of anguish and pain, Anita relocated herself to a corner across the room, hidden away but a spot that she could still she everything.
Katarina chose to ignore Bruce Wayne’s grand entrance in favor of verbally massacring the fat blonde who had called her a harlot. It appeared, however, that she had run way.
‘So she wasn’t as dumb as she looked’
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
After five minutes of fruitless searching, with half a mind focused on Bruce’s mocking speech, Katarina gave up her search for the pudgy woman. But if she saw her again so help her god she’d make this so called Joker look like a virtual saint!
“Mrs. Napier you look lovely this evening” came the silky voice of Bruce Wayne as he made his way toward her.
Shooting him a glare that would have made a lesser man flee the still fuming woman responded in a hushed tone so that only he could hear, “You are lucky we are in public or else I made you cry right now!”
With a look of innocence on his face Bruce responded, “Why ever Mrs. Napier?”
“Oh I don’t know, may be because it took the treat of a month in jail to get the paparazzi off of my back maybe?”
Letting out a short, but genuine, chuckle Bruce took this opportunity to tease the enraged woman before him.
“I’m deeply sorry Mrs. Napier, I’ll relieve you of my presence so you’ll have to suffer no longer.” with a dramatic bow and a kiss to the hand. Bruce Wayne made his way to the balcony.
He was quickly followed by a not so happy looking Rachel.
‘Hopefully she’ll kill him. I’ll say it was self defense’
Katarina saw a frightened looking Harvey taking a drink from a man in a butler’s outfit, who then quickly excused himself. Seeing as she was alone and with nothing better to do but fume, Katarina decided to go help poor Harvey.
“Harvey do we need to go to a bar to get your nerve’s back in place?” Katarina teased as she came to stand beside Harvey.
“My nerve’s are just fine Katarina, but your son is starting to resemble a shrimp” the equally teasing tone in Harvey’s voice was slightly hysterical, like some one who was cornered by a pack of wolves.
“Harvey chill, why are you so nervous. It can be just this crowd?” Katrina noticed that he was fumbling with something in the pocket of his pants.
“You’re going to propose?!”
“How did you know?” Harvey’s blue eyes widened in shock.
“Call it women’s intuition. Messing with your pocket gives it away too.”
Harvey immediately stopped fumbling with the ring in his pocket and looked ready to say something when Rachel approached them. He tensed faster then a cornered rabbit.
Katarina could help but laugh earning her a confused look from Rachel and a panicked glare from Harvey, this man could punch mobsters in trial but he could keep his cool when it came to women. It reminded her of how Jack proposed.
There goes that heart string again.
“I better go check on Jack. See you two later.” Katarina said as her laughter died down. She winked comparatively at Harvey and swayed her way across the room to the entrance.
She was twenty feet away from the snack table when the elevator doors parted revealing a purple suited figure that held a shot gun above his head, shot of a round, and greeted the room.
Katarina stood frozen.
This was the Joker.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“Go-od evening ladies and gentle-man…We are tonight’s entertainment.” the white painted face of the man turned to the cocktail table, he spotted Jack.
“Hello there kiddo! Do you know where Harvey Dent is huh? Do ya?” kneeling down to the frightened boy’s eye level the Joker grasped the boys chin with his hand and looked into his eyes. There was something awfully familiar about those eyes.
“N-..no…sir I don’t” Jack managed to stutter out meekly, his words where muffled slightly due to the Joker pressing his cheeks in.
Bringing the child’s face closer to his own the Joker said in a rough, lower, voice then he had used before, “You’re not lying are you kid?’
“No sir!”
“Good, then let’s go see who does.” the Joker picked up Jack, cradling him in his arms in a mockingly loving fashion, and some shrimp from the table. The boy would serve as insurance in case anyone was feeling heroic that night.
As his jesters collected jewels and other valuables from Gotham’s high society the Joker harassed the guest. Slapping one here, pulling one’s hair there. Until he reached an old white haired gentleman with glasses.
“We will not be intimidated by thugs.” the proud haughty voice of the man cut into the silence of the room. Everyone stared at the crimson lipped man, waiting for his reaction.
Frowning, looking as if he was solving a puzzle, the Joker responded, “You remind me of my father.” Shifting his hostage’s weight to one arm he pulled out a blade and pressed it to the elder mans jugular. “I hated my father” he said with the same harsh, lower toned voice.
“That is enough let my son go!”
