The Price We All Pay
It been a month since Troy encounter the scientist, in that time he been doing his best to dodge protesters, reporters, paparazzi, and other college and even government scientist who wanted to study Troy and the baby that was growing in him. Sighing Troy carefully made his way downstairs, already dress for school, as he waited for his mom to get up and take him to school. Troy’s body was already showing the signs of his pregnancy, mainly his belly beginning to bulge out a little, Troy and the others felt that it was unsafe for him to drive around for now. Troy sat down and rested for a bit, his body feeling tired as it was not use to the extra weight now. ‘Man if it tough now I can’t imagine when my stomach look like it carrying a watermelon.’ Troy thought looking feeling as if something wasn’t quite right. ‘Hey at least I haven’t began developing boobs yet.” He was relieve so far but he knew it was still too early to say yet. Troy wasn’t really thrill with the knowledge that he might develop something that normally happen to a girl. Troy sighed again as he got up as his mom just came downstairs.
“Morning Troy,” she said when she her son slowly come walking to her. “Would you like some pancakes for breakfast?”
“Morning too mom,” Troy said “Yeah pancakes sure does sound nice this morning.” He followed her into the kitchen and aided her in making breakfast.
“Hey you notice that it’s awfully quiet outside.” Mrs. Balton said getting his attention.
“Now that you mention it I thought something was off,” Troy went into the front room and looked out the window and was shocked to see that there was no one in the yard, protesting or trying to get an interview. Troy ran, the best he could manage, back into the kitchen to tell his mom. “Hey there no protesters or reporters in the yard.”
“That’s weird.” She said getting the pancakes on to a plate and motion Troy to head for the table. “I can’t imagine them giving up especially the protesters who believe you’re an evil creature sent by the devil himself.”
“I know what you mean but they’re not here,” Troy said smiling as he saw the plateful of pancakes being handed to him. “Awesome thanks mom!”
Ding-dong!!
“I wonder who could that be?” they both said as they left their breakfast to go to the door. “Hello?” they both said as Mrs. Balton open the door.
They quickly move out of the way as a large crate was wheeled in followed by a lot of guys, wearing black outfits, came in carrying a bunch of boxes as well. Troy and his mom stood there as these guys kept coming in and out with crates and boxes and was forming a big pile in the middle of the room. After they brought boxes it was soon followed by furniture, more precisely baby furniture from carriages to cribs the guys in black were making another pile with this stuff. When they were done bringing in the furniture they were bringing in some other stuff which they couldn’t tell what it was, it was enough for Mrs. Balton.
“What is going on here who are you people and what are you bringing into my house?” She shouted getting the attention of a lady, who was as tall as Mrs. Balton but she had long blonde hair tied into a ponytail, and was wearing glasses.
“Hello my name is Sierra Gold,” the lady said offering her hand to shake. “This is the residence of Troy Balton, correct?”
“Yes,” Mrs. Balton said.
“Then these items are here for him.” Ms. Gold said “I’m from a special government run program that help young mother to be. Normally the program help those with very little income, but, despite knowing that you are still getting money from your husband paychecks, we felt that you might an extra hand in getting ready.”
“Really well that very kind of you. It better then being hounded by those reporters and protesters.” Mrs. Balton said.
“And those paparazzi,” Troy added.
“Yes about that,” Ms. Gold said looking at them with a smile “We had something to do with that today, we went and explain to them about what is going on with Troy and that it is the result of a rare gene and that it could very well be in them as well. of course this may stop the protesters but I can’t guarantee with the reporters and the paparazzi.”
“Um, thanks I mean I don’t know what to say.” Troy said totally shocked.
“It’s nothing it’s what we do,” Ms. Gold said. “By the way I’m aware that you just recently brought some items for the expected baby but we brought some more furniture and some clothes that can be worn by either a boy or a girl, as well as some items that well help your child grow and learn. By the way do you know if it’s a boy a girl yet?”
“I am going in for an ultrasound today after school to find out as well as to check it health and development.” Troy said.
“Well that’s good to do, I hope you have a healthy baby,” Ms. Gold said. “I must get going but we’ll be back in about one month before you should go into labor, if you need to get in hold of us for anything here’s my card with my number on it so feel free to call me.”
“Okay, thank you once again for your help,” Mrs. Balton said waving good-bye to them as they left then she looked at the clock. “We got to hurry and eat so that I can get you to school on time.”
Troy nodded and they went into the kitchen and enjoy their, now cold but still very delicious, pancakes and they headed for East High. During school Troy watch everybody go about and do their daily duties only to stop and go cute and what not when they see Troy and go about petting his stomach and telling him how brave he was or that they think that his baby was going to be the most cutest thing ever. His friends were the only ones that wouldn’t do that but he knew that secretly they did want to say that stuff. After school he, his mom, and Chad went to see Dr. Oakland, Chad was coming to give Troy some comfort. At Dr. Oakland’s office Troy followed her into a room and did as he was told. He laid down on the bed and pull his shirt up so that she could coat his stomach in a very cold gel and then began rubbing a device over it. Troy could see a grey coloring of his baby that was developing, Chad and his mom were in the room looking and talking with the doctor. He wasn’t really paying attention as to what was really being said he looked at the screen amazed that this child was really his, that he created it how it was growing in him. After it was done Dr. Oakland took some blood to do some tests. When she return to them in the lobby she was upset about something.
“Well I got some good news and bad news. Which do you want to hear first?” Dr. Oakland asked.
“Um, how about the good news first.” Troy said not really wanting to hear the bad news yet.
“Well after carefully study of the ultrasound and examination, Troy you are going to have twin boys.” She said.
“WHAT?!? Twins! Is that even possible for a guy?” Chad asked totally floored, like Troy was but he didn’t know what to say, his mom look like she was about to faint.
“Well yes it is possible, it even possible for him to have triplets or even more.” Dr. Oakland stated, but then she suddenly went depressed. “The bad news is I don’t know if Troy or the babies well survive the ordeal.”
“What do you mean?” Mrs. Balton asked when she heard that.
“On the blood test that I just took it shows that Troy’s immune system is weaken,” Dr. Oakland stated. “now it not HIV/AIDS or something like that, it just that his body isn’t use to, nor really design to carry a child thus his body is in a state of confusion unable to decide if it the babies a good thing or if it is a parasite that need to be attacked. This confusion is weakening the immune system as the body isn’t really producing anymore white blood cells and other stuff.”
“What does this mean?” Troy asked.
“It means that when you go into labor your immune system will be mostly gone and that you might not be strong enough to survive the ordeal,” Oakland continued. “Even if you didn’t die this also effect the babies and they might not making. in overall all there is less then 5% chance that you and the babies will both make it. I can give you a prescription that can boost you immune system but in the end your going to have to decide who will live you or the twins.”
The rest of that conversation went unnoticed as both Troy and his mom kept hearing the same word over and over: who will live Troy or the babies. This was something neither expected and the worse fear Mrs. Balton feared, her son, her baby boy was going to die if not her future grandchildren. The drive home was silent, Chad didn’t know what to say or think and even if he did knew what to say he believed it wouldn’t be appropriate. After dinner Chad, who decided to stay the night for Troy’s sake, and Mrs. Balton help put Troy into bed and gave a hug and a kiss(Mrs. Balton only!). After some time around midnight Troy’s door open again and Mrs. Balton stood looking at her sleeping son, crying wondering if these next few months will be her last with Troy. She knew that Troy would do what he believe is right and that all she ever wanted Troy to do even if it means that tonight would be their last night together as a family. She close the door and enter her room and collapse onto the empty bed.
“Oh God I never been one to be very religious or even offer a prayer before, but tonight I’m making one in hope that somehow someway that my son and the infants growing in him live together as family should be.” She said out loud in hope that her prayers may be answered.
Mrs. Balton got into bed not even seeing the young girl standing her room. The girl disappeared like a phantom only to reappear in Troy’s room, looking like a ghost. She looked young and old at the same her hair going past her shoulder and just stopping short of her hips. Her dress looked like it was made of sapphire even her hair was look like it was made of sapphire. Standing next to was creature that appeared just like her. It walked on four legs and looked like a mountain loin only bigger and a gem that changed color constantly.
“Dai’ Sheen you see it too don’t you,” the girl said looking down at the creature. “He and the infants aren’t going to make it in the end.”
“Yes I have seen it, Dolya but you, the Sapphire Warrior of Fate, of all being know that fate and destiny are never set in stone.” the creature, Dai’ Sheen said. “I’ve seen all of this young one’s future, ones that could have happen and ones that he wont be apart of. I know all of his future, some will be good like being a professional basketball player, will others are bad such as being a drug dealer, then there are some future that would make this one do a double take if he could see it.”
“You mean the one were he becomes a gay porn actor?” Dolya asked and Dai’ Sheen nodded. “I realize what you are saying and I also know that all possibilities are played out do to the river of time branching out to play those roles.”
“Yes if Troy realize that in one set of reality he was gay porn star, I wonder how he would act, would he take comfort in that fact that he would live on in another reality with his children.” Dai’ Sheen looking up at Dolya with what one would assume was a smile.
“Don’t really know for sure, but I want to know is there anything we can do to help grant his mother’s wish?” Dolya asked.
“I may have the power to change his current fate,” Dai’ Sheen said and before Dolya could say anything to him. “But I can’t due to the risk of harming the infinite universe. As for you those you could alter fate you know as well as I that the matter of life and death lies with your sister, Jeta the Light Green Warrior of Life.”
“I wonder if she will listen,” Dolya stated out loud. “She always going on about how life must go it natural course and so on.”
“All we can do is ask her.” Dai’ Sheen said. Fading away into nothingness, Dolya doing the same.
The next day at school Troy and Chad told Gabriella and the others the results and the news. Everyone was shocked that Troy might die, and if it wasn’t him it would be the unborn infants. Troy wasn’t surprise that they ask him what he was going to do, to be honest he wasn’t quite sure.
“I say you should save yourself, man, this way you can return to the team,” Chad said just speaking his mind, which Troy saw no objection but Chad got smack in the head by Taylor.
“How can you say that?” Taylor asked. “This is a new life. Troy need to save it!”
“Yeah but how can we ask Troy to give up his life to save them?” Gabriella asked. “For me I want both to live.”
“I’m with Gabriella on this,” Sharpay said stunning everyone including herself. “But we might also want to consider the fact that they both may die, I mean there no telling what’s going to happen.”
Soon an argument began between his friends, all of them trying to say what Troy should do. Troy sighed and got up and left unnoticed by the others, except for Ryan who had remain silent as well and got up to follow him. At Troy’s locker, Ryan did something Troy thought would never happen, and was sort of glad that they were the only in the hallway, Ryan had given him a great big hug.
“I’m sorry,” Ryan said as he ended the hug “I thought you needed it, especially considering what the others are doing.”
“And how do you feel?” Troy said smiling a little, he did needed the hug, it made him a bit more relax.
“Me? I’m scared shitless,” Ryan said not caring of the language issue “I’m scared that I’m going to lose a new friend because of a stupid gene, and if I don’t lose him then he’s most likely to lose his unborn child because his body is having a strange reaction to the babies. What worse, like my sister said, both of you could die and there nothing I can do to stop.”
“What do you think you should do?” Troy asked.
“To be honest Troy I don’t know,” Ryan said. “In the end you need to do what you think is right. I can’t speak for the others but I will go along with whatever choice you go with.” Ryan gave another hug and left, Troy silently thanked Ryan for the support and went on to his next class.
That night Troy dinner was very quite, his mother didn’t want to influence her son decision. Troy however wanted to hear what she wanted to say but when he tried to ask her she said nothing. Eventually the silence became to much for Troy and he left not even finishing his meal. His friends came over and they wanted to discuss some more about what Troy should do. This upset his mom even more who flew into a rage, telling them that they were insensitive little brats, that they had no clue as how they were hurting Troy. Troy flew into his own rage and told everyone that they could say whatever they want but in the end this was his problem, his mistake that he had to take care of. Troy storm off into his room and went to bed locking his door. Troy laid in his bed now more scared then he ever knew, all he wanted to do in his life was play basketball and maybe perform in theater, now he doesn’t know where he was going or what to do. He just laid there ignoring his mom pleas to unlock the door, until he fell asleep.
During the night, Troy had a dream in it he was in his school wearing his uniform, he was playing basketball against a faceless opponent. Suddenly he was alone still holding the ball and soon he heard the sound of a baby crying. He turn around to see a crib he went to walk towards it but as soon as he move the crib flew backwards and the more Troy tried to get to it the further it got. Troy stop out of breath and soon he saw Dr. Oakland, writing something in front of him and dropping it. It was a note that said: ‘What will it be you or the babies.’ Troy paled and ran away not wanting to think about it right now. As he ran he suddenly heard a voice that sounded like his own speak in the back ground.
“The day a door is closed
The echoes fill your soul
They won’t say which way to go
Just trust your heart
To find you’re here for
Open another door
But I’m not sure anymore
It’s just so hard”
Troy didn’t understand, what it was saying as he ran into another room. In there he found his friends they were acting normally until they saw him then they were all over him telling him what he need to do, they pulled at his arms and Troy struggle to get free, and when he did for the exit only to find it was lock. Troy turn to see his friends coming to him still trying to tell him what he need, and Troy made a dash to another room.
“Voices in my head
Tell me they know best
Got me on the edge
They’re pushing, pushing-
they’re pushing
I know they’ve got a plan
But the ball’s in my hands
This time it’s man to man
I’m driving, fighting inside
A world that’s upside down
And spinning faster
What do I do now?- without you”
The next room Troy enter he found the room to be spinning, trying not to get dizzy as he make his way through, he realize it was the hallway and the lockers open up to start spewing basketballs at Troy. Troy dodge them and the few that did hit him had words on them: You? The Babies? Theater? The Team? What will it be? Troy gasping for air took one of the ball he manage to catch and threw it at the window. The ball didn’t break the window instead it turn into his father, naked and aroused, looking like he did on the night he raped Troy. His father move to him saying: ‘You want to recreate that night son? Want to see if you can have another?’ Troy freaked out and stumbled backward unto the stairs, climbing up it backwards, using both his hands and feet to get up it as his father tried to close to him.
“I don’t know where to go
What’s the right team?
I want my own thing
So bad I’m gonna scream
I can’t choose, so confused
What’s it all mean?
I want my own dream
So bad I’m gonna scream”
Troy made it to the top, his father no longer chasing him, he heard a sad lullaby being sung and when he found it he saw his mom and Gabriella at another crib, crying looking sad as they rock a crib. ‘Why? Why? My son, my grandchildren why did they have to leave!’ his mother sobbed out, Troy try to reach out but they moved out of his range and Gabriella looked at him ‘Is it going to be me or the babies?’ she asked Troy didn’t want to hear it and ran away. Strange barriers appeared and Troy didn’t stop as he broke through them.
“I'm kicking down the walls
I gotta make 'em fall
Just break through 'em all
I'm punchin', crashing - I'm gonna
Fight to find myself
Me and no one else
Which way? I can't tell
I'm searchin', searchin'
Can't find the... way that I should turn
I should turn right or left
It's...it's like nothing works - without you
I don’t know where to go
What’s the right team?
I want my own thing
So bad I’m gonna scream
I can’t choose, so confused
What’s it all mean?
I want my own dream
So bad I’m gonna scream”
Troy enter a final room and it was the Theater stage. Troy sat on the edge of the stage trying to catch his breath. As he was getting his nerve under control more basketballs rain down from above. Troy moved to avoid getting hit by them only to find that he ran into his friends again, he went to run away only to that he was surrounded by them, his still naked dad, his crying mom, and Gabriella. They had him encircled trying to get him to decide what he need to do.
“Yeah the clock's running down
Hear the crowd gettin'n loud
I'm consumed by the sound
Is it hurt? Is it love
Can the music ever be enough
Gotta work it out, gotta work it out
You can do it, you can do it
I don’t know where to go
What’s the right team?
I want my own thing
So bad I’m gonna scream
I can’t choose, so confused
What’s it all mean?
I want my own dream
So bad I’m gonna scream
I don’t know where to go
What’s the right team?
I want my own thing
So bad I’m gonna scream
I can’t choose, so confused
What’s it all mean?
I want my own dream
So bad I’m gonna scream”
Troy couldn’t take it anymore, he grab his head and bent his body and began to cry as they got closer and when they were to close, he flung his head back and screamed: ‘Aaughhhhhh! Aaughhhhhh!’ Everyone vanish without a trace. ‘All I want is to live but I want my sons to live as well. I want to stop living in the shadows of my mistakes, my father’s mistakes.’
‘Since when does having a baby a mistake?’ a voice came out of nowhere, troy look around to find a young girl in the audience area. She was as tall as Troy with shoulder length hair dyed a light green color. Her clothes were light green as well, and so was her eyes, when she got closer to Troy. She was dress like an ancient Shaolin monk. ‘My name is Jeta, I’m the Warrior of Life, a being who represent the elemental power of Life, which include Death. It is one of 18 elements that represent the Neutral Force known as the Twilight, that help keeps the infinite realms of the universe in balance.’
‘Why are you here?’ Troy asked
‘To see you, my sister Dolya wanted me to see you when she heard your mother prayer to find a way to save you both.’ Jeta said walking up to Troy. ‘Normally I wouldn’t, to mess with life and death is to disturb the natural order, but she insisted.’
‘I don’t know why, you can’t change my fate,’ Troy said ‘I’m going to die, whether it from giving birth or some other way. I know that but I don’t want my sons to live, if they survive, without knowing the real me.’
‘Is that what troubles you in the end?’
‘Yes’
‘So your friends and mother actions make you feel like your not going to be there for you sons?’
‘Yes and no, I mean there’s a chance that I might live but then I will never know how they will grow up, if they would love me like I love my parents and what not.’
‘Yes I see, death can make you think that way, and you just don’t want to throw away you future either correct?’ Troy nodded. ‘Dolya always like to say that the future is never set in stone, and while that it is true that any and all possibilities will play out the one you will find yourself in is up to you.’
‘What do you mean?’
‘I mean that life and fate flow like a ocean of rivers, each one close to each other but never really touching except where ones, like yourself, river’s branches into another as they change their fate, or when two people create a new life. These rivers may create new rivers or just end, new fate/lives created while old fate/lives have ended. But to forcibly restart a life after it had ended is against this very nature and would mess up the flow, however, since your life hasn’t ended nor has your children I see nothing wrong in helping you.’
‘Why? Why would you do this, I mean I really don’t know you, shoot until now I never knew you existed.’
‘To ignore someone in there dire need of help is truly wrong and cold hearted don’t you think? I mean it not hurting the natural order or the Balance.’
‘I guess but how do I thank you?’
‘I am an immortal who does not need any thanks, but I do ask that you give these babies the love and attention that all babies need, and find the destiny that suit you well. Also know, that while I can’t see the future like Dolya can, I can see life and future lives that one may create, and from what I can tell you will have quite a few more babies to come, now that I shifted your fate.’
‘Wait do you mean that I’m going to have more kids? Will they be like with a girl or my genetic problem?’
‘Don’t know that’s up to you and how you want to proceed.’ Jeta raised her hand a light green glow encased it which soon expand to engulf Troy. ‘Now sleep young one, and return to your dream and know that you have nothing to fear, of course you may tell your friends and mother if you want but they may find that hard to believe.’ Soon Troy fell asleep phasing back into the dream he has in, but it change into something else. The next morning Troy woke up to find a note that said: ‘While your father made a mistake and raped you while he was drunk, don’t ever think that bringing life into this world is a mistake because it’s not. Many do say that it is because they were never ready, but you Troy are ready because you aren’t alone, and I don’t just mean your mom, and your dad(when he’s ready to return to the picture), you have your friends and the girl you love to help you out, even if they might steer you to insanity. Don’t be afraid to ask them for help.--- Jeta’
Troy smiled and got ready for a new day.
