After they had set up, Rowan suggested that they take a walk. In the woods. To show them that everything was going to be okay. They didn't really have a choice in the matter, but they still complained, bitched and Whitney even cried. But they went anyway. Rowan and Tommy leading the group while Whitney clung to Alice and Clay and Halo brought up the rear, his arm around her waist.

"Let's go back after three miles," Tommy said.

"Sounds good," Rowan agreed.

They marched on. There was a slight breeze, which made the trees whisper. Whitney kept jumping every couple minutes, which would be funny if it weren't also sad. Halo pushed Clay's arm off her, shooting him an are you crazy? look. No one knew and she didn't want them to know. This was her secret. Halo didn't have much and she clung to what little she did have. And Clay was definitely something.

"Not now," she hissed.

"Then, when?" Clay said softly.

"This isn't the right time. We aren't the prototype for stability. Rowan would freak out, and who knows how Whitney is going to take it?"

"So when is the right time?"

"Yeah. But the right time is soon." She smiled and squeezed his hand. "Maybe after this trip." Clay smiled and gave her a quick kiss when no one was looking. Halo felt bad about lying to him. She didn't want to tell. It would make it real and it would be harder to leave. Halo always left them.

Tommy nearly tripped over the sign. He picked it up by the end. In faded red letter, it read CAMP CRYSTAL LAKE. When the group saw it, everyone freaked out. Alice paled, Whitney squeaked, Clay swore and Halo froze.

"I wanna go back," Alice said.

"It's only been a mile," Rowan argued. "This trip is about conquering your fears."

"Fuck that!" Whitney screamed and took off. Tommy and Clay ran after her. Halo dug around in her pockets until she found a cigarette. It was going to be a long day.

That night, Clay, Whitney and Rowan went to bed early. Tommy, Alice and Halo stayed outside. They built a fire. Halo had been smoking all day and was killing a cancer stick once every five or so minutes. The hike had gone to pieces after Whitney fled. Later, Halo and Tommy had gone into town and gotten some food, cigarettes and beer. Alice and Halo were on their 3rd and 5th beers respectively. Tommy was on his first.

"Why are we really here?" Alice mumbled.

"To heal." Halo made a face. "Bunch of bullshit."

"This place is as creepy as it was 30 years ago," Alice said.

"In a way, this is your fault Alice. You killed his mom," Tommy said.

"She was trying to kill me! I had to!" Alice snapped.

"Hey, hey calm down people!" Halo raised her hands. "The asshole is dead. D-E-A-D. Why don't you people get it?"

"He always comes back," Tommy said. "He can't die." Halo rolled her eyes and drained her beer. These were the most fucked up, paranoid people she had ever met. And she knew a lot of that type. All her friends back home were junkies and whores, just like her.

"I'm gonna go take a piss," she said.

"Good luck," Tommy called. Halo gave him the finger and went into her cabin. Whitney was fast asleep. She didn't need to go. She needed to think. The lights were unflattering and she stared at her face. When had she gotten so old and tired? There were bags under her eyes. Old acne scars all over her face. A scar on her jaw from Jason. Before, she had been pretty. Pictures told her so. But now, she was what all her friends were. A used up junkie whore. She splashed water on her face and went back out.

The first thing she saw outside was Alice's head. It was off her body, and the rest was a few feet away. Tommy was laying by the trees. He had been stabbed while trying to run away.

Ten feet away stood Jason, who was lit up by the fire, the glow almost angelic. Their eyes met once again. Shivering, Halo hugged herself, praying he would leave her alone. When Jason took a step forward, she began to run. That wasn't something she was good at, but she still did it. Maybe there were people nearby. They could help her.

Tiny branches clawed at her legs, creating scratches that stung. Halo was crying, her vision a blur. She stopped at the edge of a ravine, when she ran into a tree. The impact was strong enough to send Halo onto her back. She lay there, stunned and trying to think. It hurt too much to do so. So she waited for him to get her. When Jason came, all she did was blink and wait for him to raise the bloody machete. When he didn't do anything, she was surprised.

Suddenly, Jason extended a large, strong hand. Halo found herself lifted in the air, tossed over Jason's shoulders like a sack of potatoes. She held onto his neck as they headed for parts unknown.
