Part V – Council
Obi-Wan’s meditation was, thankfully, not interrupted by
any visions. Exactly four hours later, his time sense woke
him. Sticking his head into the personal area, he found
that Sekina still slept. He made his way forward to
relieve Anakin.
“It’s a good thing you stayed up late last night,” Obi-Wan
said as he found the boy fully awake at his post. “It was
the perfect preparation for this mission. But you can get
some sleep now.”
The boy protested that he could continue for hours more,
but nonetheless relinquished the controls. Curling up in a
corner, he was soon breathing evenly.
Obi-Wan examined their progress. The hyperspace drive
continued to exceed expectations; it looked like they would
actually make it to Coruscant in three more hours. He
checked all the other readouts, letting his hands roam over
the controls. He regretted that he hadn’t really gotten to
fly the craft, and he’d been so looking forward to it.
Perhaps I could buzz the Central Spire myself, he joked to
himself, knowing he would never set such a bad example for
Anakin.
Sometime later, Obi-Wan had just turned to check on Anakin,
who still slept soundly, when the aft door opened. Sekina
peeked out, spotted Obi-Wan, smiled. As she walked towards
him, Obi-Wan sat as though mesmerized, watching her hips
gently sway, making the scarves flutter prettily about her
legs. He realized then that he had let his shields drop
while she slept. As he hurriedly attempted to put them
back up again, she reached him. Taking his face in her
hands, she kissed him full on the lips, her tongue slipping
warmly into his mouth.
Startled, but unable to pull away with the high back of the
pilot’s chair behind him, Obi-Wan looked pointedly at
Anakin’s nearby form, hoping Sekina would take the hint.
She followed his eyes, then pulled away with a sigh.
“Oh, yes, I forgot. Sorry.” She let her hands trail
gently along his jaw, staring deeply into his eyes, before
finally breaking the contact as she sat gracefully in the
co-pilot’s chair. She looked out at the stars streaming
by. “I had forgotten, too, how pretty hyperspace is.
Where are we going?”
“Coruscant,” Obi-Wan answered, forcing his eyes away from
her becomingly crossed legs. He turned back to the
dashboard, pretended to check some readings. “It’s the
seat of the Galactic Republic, and the Jedi.”
“A great city, spreading to the horizon, five Spires
thrusting into the sky…” Sekina said quietly.
“You have been there?” Obi-Wan asked, surprised.
“No, but I have seen it.”
Obi-Wan looked over at her. She seemed completely serious.
“Have you always been able to see the re?”re?” He felt a
pang of jealousy; he had never had the Sight, at least not
very clearly.
“As long as I can remember. One of my early masters,
Paroo, set me up as a soothsayer for a while. Most of the
time I told my customers vague generalities to fit any
situation, but sometimes a vision would come to me, and I
just knew the answers to all their questions. Of course,
usually they didn’t want to hear it and preferred the
generalities.”
“And have you…Sent your visions to others before?”
“Oh, yes. Al-Ec-Mar didn’t trust my interpretations and
wanted to see for himself, so it was his idea. I don’t
know how I did it, if that’s what you’re about to ask; I
just did it. But those Sendings were through touch. I’d
never Sent from a distance, until…”
“Me.”
“You.” Sekina smiled broadly at the memory of the Sending.
Obi-Wan could swear her energy spiked for just a moment.
“And how did you know to Send to me?” Obi-Wan asked,
determined to get to the heart of this increasingly strange
mystery.
“I saw you, in a vision. I just…knew.” She shrugged.
“But how did you Send to me? Coruscant and B’nari are
light years apart. How did you even know where to start?”
Sekina leaned forward, put a hand on his arm. “I’m sorry I
can’t describe it better. All I know is, I concentrated
really hard, and I could feel you, far, far away.” She
started stroking the arm, eyeseyes closed. Obi-Wan could
feel her energy tingling across his skin through the cloth
of his sleeve. “Actually, the first few times it didn’t
work, I could tell you couldn’t hear me.” Her hand stilled
as her eyes opened. “But I kept trying, and then, two days
ago, it worked. We connected.” She turned her dazzling
smile on him once more. “Tell me how it happened. What
were you doing?”
“Sleeping,” Obi-Wan said briefly, reluctant to go into
detail.“Ah,“Ah, that explains it. You must have been awake the other
times. But when you slept, you were open to my signal.”
“Yes, I suppose that does explain it.” Somethias sas still
bothering Obi-Wan, and he finally put his finger on it.
“Anakin, he had the same dream, at least part of it. Did
you send it to him, too?”
“Not intentionally,” Sekina frowned, confused. “He was
sleeping, too? And nearby?”
“Yes. So you think, like a laser beam that spreads out
over a long distance, he got an edge of it?”
Sekina just shrugged, obviously at a loss. Curiouser and
curiouser, Obi-Wan thought.
------
“Control, this is the Vigor, requesting permission to land.
Acknowledge.”
“Acknowledged, Vigor, cleared for landing on runway five
seven oh. You all right? You’re back early.
Acknowledge.”
“Coming in on five seven oh. Unexpected complications, but
the ship is fine.”
They landed smoothly, disembarked, and headed toward Obi-
Wan and Anakin’s apartment before anyone could ask
questions. Sekina was wrapped in Obi-Wan’s brown robe,
which she kept forgetting to hold closed as she stared
about her. Anakin, who had had to be awakened, walked
behind, rubbing his eyes. It was still early, so they
encountered few beings, but the ones they did see stopped
and stared as they passed. Obi-Wan felt increasingly
uncomfortable, and was glad when they finally made it to
his rooms.
He sent Anakin to bed and went about making himself and
Sekina some breakfast. theythey ate, Obi-Wan considered
what to do about Sekina and Juckolda, but before he
finished, there was a knock at the door.
“Obi-Wan, what in the name of the Force is going on?”
demanded Mace Windu when Obi-Wan opened the door. Behind
him, a crowd of beings filled the hall.
Obi-Wan stared at the mob that had gathered at his door.
“I don’t- Oh, Force.” Sekina’s Force energy. She must
have been pumping out mental pheromones all during their
walk from the space port. Why hadn’t he thought of that
before? “It’s her, Master.” He pointed inside.
Mace, taking that as an invitation, stepped through the
doorway – and saw the woman sitting at the table.
“Sekina,” he whispered.
That’s when it hit Obi-Wan, like a revelation. Sekina’s
Sending had indeed broadened over the distance between
them. It may have been focused on him, but it hadenedened
to include, not only Anakin, who slept in the next room,
but Master Windu, who lived completely across campus.
Which meant the beam had penetrated every sleeping mind in
the Temple, perhaps on all of Coruscant. No wonder the
beings they’d seen had stopped to stare, and a crowd had
gathered. Not only did Sekina’s energy attract them, but
most of them had dreamt about having sex with her. Obi-Wan
groaned and leaned against the wall, his hands covering his
face.
Mace Windu continued to stare at Sekina for a long, silent
moment. She graced him with a friendly smile. He seemed
about to take a step forward, then abruptly spun around,
his robe flying out around him. “I will be right back,”
the imposing Master hissed as he passed Obi-Wan on the way
out, “and then you will explain this to the Council.”
“Yes, Master.”
Master Windu returned quickly, with a very old Chalactan
woman. “Vivi, that’s her,” he said to the old woman,
barely looking at Sekina himself.
Vivi approached Sekina, smg, ag, and took the younger
woman’s hands. “Hello, child. Why don’t we go get you
some new clothes, hmmm?”
Meanwhile, Master Windu was guiding Obi-Wan towards the
door with a hand on his arm. But they both turned in alarm
when Sekina called out:
“Don’t sell me to them, Obi-Wan, I beg you! If I’ve
displeased you-”
“Sekina, it’s all right, you misunderstand,” Obi-Wan said
as he stepped towards her. She pulled away from Vivi and
ran into his arms. “I’m not selling you,” he continued
soothingly, stroking her hair. “I didn’t take you from
Juckolda to make you my own slave. You are free now.
You’ll be given your own rooms and food and clothing, until
you decide what you want to do next.”
“But I know what I want to do,” she protested, looking up
at him, tears glistening on her eyelashes. “I want to stay
with you. Please?” Obi-Wan gazed down at her, very aware
of the other people in the room watching them.
Just then, Anakin emerged from his room. “What’s going
on?” he asked sleepily.
Mace decided leadership was needed. “Obi-Wan, tell her
that she can stay here, and Vivi will stay with her until
we get back. Vivi, see if you can mute her, as we
discussed. Anakin, you’re coming with us.”
Obi-Wan obeyed, murmuring to Sekina, using a bit of Jedi
persuasion to convince her that everything was all right,
and he would be back soon. Then the three males left, the
younger two struggling to keep up with Master Windu’s brisk
pace through the halls. As they neared the North Spire
lift that would take them up to the Council chamber, Mace
turned to the young padawan.
“Anakin, I have an important assignment for you.” Anakin
hurried to stand beside the much larger man. “You will go
directly to the Vigor, where you will prepare a detailed
report on the tests you were able to complete. You will
also design a proposal for completing the remaining tests.
The fate of the Vigor project rests in your hands.”
“I won’t let you down, Master Windu.” Anakin bowed, and
took off towards the hangar.
The lift opened, proved to be empty. Mace and Obi-Wan
stepped in and began their ascent. Master looked askance
at Knight.
“What is the nature of your…relationship with Se- with this
woman?” Mace asked after a moment.
“I’m not quite sure, Master,” Obi-Wan answered. “The last
two days have been rather…eventful.”
“Have you been…intimate with her?”
“No.” Well, not really, not in real life. Yet.
Mace turned, seemed to study Obi-Wan for a moment. “Then
you are a stronger man than I,” he said quietly.
The lift opened, the two men stepped out. While Mace
strode boldly through the chamber doors and took his seat,
Obi-Wan hovered nervously just inside the doors. The rest
of the Council was still milling about the room, but when
they saw Mace had arrived, began to take their seats.
“Why have you called us here on such short notice, Windu?”
hissed Oppo Rancisis, the tip of his serpentine tail
twitching. “It had better be important.”
“I think you will find it so, Oppo,” Mace answered dryly.
“That is, if you think a new power in the Force is
important.”
“New power, you say?” Yaddle asked over the questioning
murmur of the rest, her green ears rotating forward. “Good
power, I am hoping.”
“That is yet to be determined,” Mace replied. “I have
called Obi-Wan Kenobi before us to explain, as he is most
directly involved.” He motioned at Obi-Wan.
The young Knight had, of course, known this was coming, and
had used his wait to focus his thoughts and reduce his
heart rate. He did not, though, rehearse what he would
say; it would never occur to him to lie before the Council.
He would simply answer all their questions, and suffer
whatever consequences there were to be. He stepped into
the center of the Council, facing Mace’s chair, and bowed.
“Just start at the beginning, Knight,” Mace urged.
“Yes, Master. Three nights ago, I had a dream about
rescuing a slave girl from her evil master. I thought it
only a dream. But then it was repeated during a
meditation, and as I slept the next night.” Another murmur
passed around the circle.
“So you naturally reported this and took steps to uncover
the dreams’ meaning?” asked Plo Koon, his voice made odd by
the facemask which hid his features.
“I’m afraid not, Master,” Obi-Wan sighed.
“Not alone in that is he, I think,” Yoda came to Obi-Wan’s
defense as Koon seemed about to speak again. Several
Council members stirred uncomfortably in their seats.
“Go on, Obi-Wan,” Mace urged quietly.
“My Padawan, Anakin Skywalker, and I were dispatched by
Master Yoda to test the new Vigor prototype. My Padawan
proposed two planetary destinations, one of which was
B’nari. As that was also the name of the planet in my
dreams, I chose it.”
“Trying to get in a little slave girl rescuing between
engine knockdowns?” put in Adi Gallia, her tone teasing.
“With all due respect, Master,” Obi-Wan replied, turning
back to Mace as he was unable to bear the woman’s knowing
gaze, “I expected to find nothing, and thus prove the
insignificance of my dreams.”
“But that is not what you found,” said Ki-Adi-Mundi, the
only Knight among the Masters of the Council. “If I may,
Master?” he queried Mace, who as the caller of the meeting
held the Chair. Mace nodded. “I took the liberty of
downloading the Vigor’s logs,” the Cerean continued. “If
you would consult your readers…” All eleven of the other
Council members leaned over and retrieved readers from the
network ports under their chairs. “As you can see, a
sensor sweep of the planet showed no habitations. But then
you made a standard identification request. How do you
explain this, Knight?”
“We made visual contact with a building using an unknown
shield configuration that confused our sensors. They fired
on us.”
“And you returned fire?” Ki-Adi-Mundi asked.
“Only after they failed to respond to our hail, and fired
on us again. Then we targeted only their shield and
weapons.”
“Sustaining no damage to your own vessel,” Eeth Koth noted.
“Correct. The Vigor performed excellently, Master,” Obi-
Wan replied, aware that the Iridonian Zabrak had helped
design the prototype.
“As did you,” Koth responded. Obi-Wan just bowed his
thanks and turned away; the man’s horned visage always
reminded him too much of Darth Maul to look upon for very
long.
“And after this battle, another identification request did
receive a reply,” Ki-Adi-Mundi pulled the meeting back on
course. Then Juckolda’s threats sounded all around Obi-Wan
as the Council members watched the communications log.
“He carries the taint of the Dark Side,” whispered Depa
Billaba when she saw Juckolda.
“You can’t tell that from a log file,” Even Piell dismissed
her claim. It occurred to Obi-Wan that Master Piell was
nocturnal, so wouldn’t have been asleep for the dreams.
“No, but I can tell that from my dreams, or whatever they
were,” Depa retorted. “He is evil. Did you fight him?”
she asked Obi-Wan. “Is he Sith?”
“Yes, I fought him, but no, he is not Sith. He seemed
untrained, a mere dabbler in the Dark powers.”
“You say you fought him, but according to the logs the
Vigor touched down for only a moment, and then lifted off
again,” Ki-Adi-Mundi, ever mindful of the details, pointed
out.
“I sent my Padawan on another sweep of the planet; I feared
there might be more shielded buildings. I fought Juckolda
alone.”
“That is against policy.”
“It is, Knight, but my Padawan is very young and untested.
I was protecting him.”
“Qui-Gon’s find, I am remembering,” Yaddle spoke up. “Very
young is he. ‘The Chosen One.’ Hmph.”
Ignoring her, Ki-Adi-Mundi won. on. “So between the first
and second landing, you were on the surface. If you could
fill in that gap for us.”
“I fought Juckolda and rescued Sekina, just as in the
Sendings.”
“The what?” Depa asked, looking suddenly even more
interested.
“The Sendings. That is what Sekina calls what she did.
She says she had a vision that I would come to her rescue,
and she sent it to me as a kind of-”
“Incentive,” Mace finished for the young Knight, who nodded
his agreement.
“I have never heard of one being showing their visions to
another,” protested Even Piell.
“As I said, a new power in the Force,” Mace Windu replied
smugly.
“Good power it is, too,” Yaddle said. “Revolutionize
communications, it could.”
“I have heard of it,” Depa said, and though her voice was
quiet, the seriousness of her tone thrust everyone in the
room into silence. “On Chalacta there is a legend about a
man who sent prophecies to others as they slept.”
“Tell us more about this legend, you should,” Yoda urged.
“Alas, I know no more. It is an old story, a children’s
tale now. I shall look into it.”
“It would be simpler to bring this Sekina before us, have
her explain,” Oppo Rancisis put in impatiently.
“I don’t think that would be a good idea,” said Mace Windu.
“And why not?” Oppo demanded.
“Because there is more to it than that. This woman, she is
very strong with the Force, she… Obi-Wan, maybe you can
explain it.”
Obi-Wan swallowed. “As Master Windu says, she is strong in
the Force. She exudes Light energy as a Sith does Dark.”
“So?” Adi Gallia queried.
“So, it is very…attracting. It renders her nearly
irresistible,” Obi-Wan admitted.
“I can vouch for that,” Mace Windu put in. “As can the
crowd that is probably even now gathered outside her door.”
“Really,” the human woman said slowly, considering. “This
requires study.”
“Agreed. Obi-Wan, return to your quarters and keep Sekina
there,” Mace ordered. “We shall summon you again when we
have reached a decision.”
“Yes, Master.”
“May the Force bth yth you,” Yoda intoned, in the
traditional ending of an audience. Obi-Wan bowed to the
circle and left the Council chamber.
Behind him, Mace declared “Reconvene in four hours with
proposals.” As the other members dispersed, Yoda leaned
over to Mace.
“Sending him back to her is wise, you think?”
“She is very attached to him. I do not wish to cause her
any more distress. And he has assured me that he has
resisted her thus far.”
“But will that continue?”
“I doubt it. Were I still his age, I would envy him.”
“Much older than you am I, and envy him I still do.” The
two Masters chuckled. “And young Skywalker?”
“I set him a task that should keep him busy for a while,
away from her. If this drags on, we might have to send him
elsewhere. Perhaps a few days in the crèche might do him
some good.”

If this drags on, we might have to send him
elsewhere. Perhaps a few days in the crèche might do him
some good.”
