Chapter 6

Anna got to her room with Jack half a step behind her, and locked the door once they were both in. Nobody saw her back unless she wanted them to, and locking the door would ensure her privacy.

“All right, off with it, luv. Let’s see.” She stripped off her shirt and turned her back to him, trying to think of something to say. He had seen her scars before, of course, but he had never spent so long examining them, and her vulnerability made her nervous. She could practically feel his eyes burning holes in her back. She started humming the first thing that came into her head, in order to give herself something to think about.

“What’s that you’re humming? Never heard it before.”

“Oh, it’s an old song. Scottish, I think. I learned it from a Scotsman, anyway.”

“You’re nervous. Relax, luv. You’ve got your shoulders pulled up so far they’re practically over your ears. Doesn’t that hurt?”

“Yes, now that you mention it.” Anna dropped her shoulders and gathered her courage. “So what do you think about my back?”

“Sea serpent. Definitely. Or maybe one of those Chinese dragons. It’s almost there already, so it wouldn’t take a lot of ink to bring it out.”

“Show me. I want to see it before I decide.”

“To really see it, you’d need two mirrors. You haven’t got them. But I’ll show you anyway.” Jack stood behind her and traced the outlines on her back with his fingers. “Head here,” somewhere in the middle of her left shoulder, “coming down this way,” along the line between the point of her left shoulderblade and the right side of her ribs, “coiled up about here,” something she couldn’t feel at all, “and ending hereabouts,” back on the left again, at the level of the small of her back. His hand stayed there, resting over the crest of her hipbone. “I could draw it on you if you had any ink.”

“You can draw? I never knew that.”

“With something staring me in the face like that, I can draw. If it’s coming out of my own head, not so much. What do you think, then?”

“I like the idea, but it scares me all the same.”

“That’s easy, luv. All you need to get over that is rum. It’s all part of learning to let go.”

“Is rum your solution to everything? It certainly seems like it.”

“Not everything. Just the easy ones. The rest of it, you have to deal with yourself.”

“Ha. Maybe I should start with the rum anyway. That might make some of it easier.”
