Chapter 6 – Mal Voyage

“Wakey Wakey, love. It’s time to shove off.” Jack nudged his first mate. “The tide is turning. We’ve got a ship to run, love.” Will didn’t wake. Jack nudged him again, worried. “Love?” No reaction. “Whelp?" No reaction. "WILLIAM, wake up!” He shook him hard, almost knocking him off the bed. The boy’s breathing was slow and even; sound asleep. Jack sat up, livid. “Bill Turner, you son of a whore! You wake William up immediately!”

“Or else what, CAPTAIN?” Bill appeared, hands on hips at the bedside, grinning.

“Or you and the rest of your crew can get off me ship, ‘cause I don’t sail without me first mate!” He sat there with his arms folded. “Torture me all ye want, Bill. This ship doesn’t move without the whelp at my side.”

Bill laughed. “You can wake him. It was only a joke, Jack. Ye know I’d never harm my own son.”

“Why not? He hurt you, didn’t he?”

Bill’s eyes flared momentarily. “Aye, but he done nothin’ serious.”

“So if it was only a joke, how do I wake him up?”

“Just keep tryin’. You’ll figure it out soon enough.” Bill walked through the door, still grinning.

Jack thought about it. /Knowing Bill, it’s something simple./ He kissed Will. Nothing. He thought some more. /He knows I love the lad./ He smiled, knowingly.

Jack took Will’s flaccid manhood into his mouth, suckling on it and tickling his sac with one hand. Will didn’t wake, but his member started to swell. Jack ran his tongue all around the crown, nudging it under the foreskin. He began licking all around it. Will’s organ hardened faster. He started stroking up and down Will’s length with his mouth, taking in the whole length and letting it out again. Jack reached above his head into the headboard cupboard and brought out the small bottle of rose oil, which he then used to slick up his fingers. He slipped one digit into Will’s heat and began moving it in and out in time with his mouth on Will’s manhood. He brushed against Will’s sweet spot and Will’s member twitched.

Jack smiled and sent a second finger in, rubbing the little nest of nerves on every stroke. By the way Will’s organ was throbbing and his sac tightening, Jack knew Will was close. He moved his fingers faster and took Will’s length down his throat and started swallowing on it. Only a couple of thrusts later, Will came violently into Jack’s throat, screaming as he awoke to such pleasure.

As the love-making tremors were settling down, finally, Will was still breathing eratically and gasped, “Jack, how did you do that?”

“What?” Jack tipped his head, curious.

“I didn’t wake up until I spilled. How?”

“Oh, that. Your father has an odd sense of humor, lad. He did something that kept you sleeping. I guessed that a good rogering might be what it took t’wake ye, and it looks like I was right. Now…let’s get dressed. We’ve got a ship to run.” He climbed out of bed, his manhood standing proudly at attention, and started to get dressed.

“Jack, you can’t steer the ship like that. The wheel will knock your willie off.” Will pointed and smiled innocently.

“No time, whelp. Maybe later ye can help me with it.” He finished dressing and walked out. Will dressed and followed soon after.

By the time Will got to the helm, the ropes had been cast off and the Pearl was gliding majestically out of the harbour.

As the Pearl moved into the open sea, Bill walked up the stairs to the helm and stood on Jack’s side opposite Will. Had any of the living been able to see them, they’d have seen a treat. Bill was six foot seven inches of pure muscle. His long brown curls flew around his face in a wind that the living didn’t feel, his royal blue bandana the only thing keeping those curls out of his eyes. Will was six feet of blacksmith-turned-sailor. His curls were slightly shorter than his father’s (though he also had a royal blue bandana around his head), and barely moved in the breeze of the living. All in all, the two were most impressive. Jack, on the other hand, was fairly small by comparison to the two Apollo’s at his sides. His lithe, wiry form topped by his almost elvish-looking, heart-shaped face, that, had he not grown his tresses and beard to such fierceness, would look more a boy than the two young-looking men beside him. Jack turned to Bill. “What heading, Bill?”

Bill pulled a folded paper out of his waistcoat and handed it to Jack. Jack opened the map and looked at it closely. “Bill, what’s this discolored area?”

“It’s the area I warned you about. The place where men go mad.”

“I’ve been through there many a time. Nothing untoward has happened.”

“You weren’t going in on the heading you’re about to travel. Nor with the crew you’ve got onboard. Just follow the map, and my men will keep your crew as sane as we can.”

Jack folded up the map and put it in his own waistcoat. “You’re the pilot. But I’m telling you, I’ve followed this exact path before, and nothing has happened.”

“Just take my word for it. This trip will be different.” He watched as Jack turned the heading to a hair’s breath East of Due North.

Will looked at Jack. “Where are we headed, Jack?”

“Looks to be the middle of nowhere; close to a week in this direction. There’s no island listed at those coordinates on the map your da’ gave me.”

“So how do you know he’s telling the truth?” Will watched Jack’s face for a reaction.

“Lad, in life your father never once lied to me. It would be a great insult to him and his memory for me to assume that he would do so now.”

Will lifted his eyebrow. “Not once?”

“Never a true lie. Oh, he’d exaggerate, as any man does. He’d avoid sayin’ things, even as I do at times. But when he gave his word, ye knew it to be God’s truth. And if Bill Turner says there’s something there, whether it’s on a map or not, I believe him. Now, keep to this heading till I get back. I have a map to copy.” Jack stood back while Will took the helm, and made his way to his cabin.

Blinking away the single tear forming at the corner of one eye, Bill watched Will steer the Pearl. “Ye grew into a fine man, Will. And once we arrive, I can tell ye that myself.” He walked right through him, making his way to the Captain’s cabin.

Jack was busy copying the map. He noticed that the discolored area seemed to go from the southern tip of Bermuda to Havana, and then to an area south of St. Augustine. He drew the map identically to the original, marking all of the locations that were on it, then filling in several others that he knew of. He put a small red X exactly where Bill had pointed.

“Very good.” Bill put his hand on Jack’s shoulder.

Jack flinched, worried that Bill would want to “play” some more. “Bill, I don’t need any help here, and I particularly don’t want any of your agonizing pleasures at this time.”

“Don’t worry, Jack. I’ve plans for later, but for now, I merely wish to help you fill in some details on that map.” He pointed to a spot about a day’s sailing south of the X that Jack had drawn. “That is where your crew will need to stay in their cabins, as living and dead come together in madness.”

“Eh? And why would they come together in madness?”

“Well, as I warned you at the beginning, the living will see and hear the dead, but not as you do. You’ll want Will to stay in the cabin as well. I don’t think he’ll be able to handle what will happen. From what I’ve heard tell, the dead start seeing into the very souls of the living. And personally, I would rather not even see yours, but I’ll have no choice there. I just hope you’re the same gallant, self-sacrificing, noble pirate that I remember you as.”

The next day, as Anamaria followed the directions on Jack’s map, the lookout cried, “Sail ho!” She grabbed the spyglass and spat. “Jack! There be a Navy ship approachin’ from the North!”

Jack ran out of the Captain’s cabin wearing just his breeches. It was obvious that he’d just woken up. Jack grabbed the spyglass and looked where Anamaria pointed. “That’s the King’s Chase under Captain Jerome Lumas out of Port Royal. She’s way out of her own territory, but she’s most definitely on her way here.” He gave the spyglass back to Anamaria. “Raise colors, but don’t change course. Let her get close enough and we’ll put one across her bow.” He took the helm from Anamaria. “Call general quarters, love.”

As soon as general quarters was sounded, pirates both dead and alive poured out up from the lower decks, manning their stations for the coming battle. Often as not, dead and living overlapped each other, and Jack couldn’t help but think he was going mad from the sight of it. Both Turners joined him on the bridge, and he explained to both of them at once what was going on.

The King’s Chase drew within hailing distance, guns at the ready, but no weapons had been fired. Jack called over to the other ship. “How is it that you are out of your own waters, Captain Lumas? Ye don’t generally sail this far north.”

“That’s none of your affairs, pirate! Now stand down and I’ll show mercy on you.”

“Mercy of the King’s Navy? Mercy of the gallows more like. Take your mercy to hell with ye, Lumas! You’ll not find anyone fool enough to believe that aboard the Pearl!” He turned to Will and nodded.

Will yelled, “FIRE!” and the battle commenced. Both ships engaged, guns firing, the grape shot from the Pearl killing more than destroying, and the ball shot from the naval ship blowing holes in sails and hull in many cases, killing very few by comparison. As the ships drew closer, both captains yelled for boarding crews, and the guns stopped, rifles and pistols taking their place.

Men from both crews boarded the other ship, crossing swords with each other, cutting each other down as quickly as possible.

The dead were not idle. They kept any soldiers who had been killed by the attack and returned as spirits busy, sending them overboard to apparently walk to the nearest port they could find if they couldn’t swim. Any pirates whose spirits returned were helped aboard the Pearl by the spirit crew.

Quite suddenly, there was a very loud report from the bowels of the other ship; their magazine tearing out the bottom of the vessel in a horrible explosion. Pirates and soldiers alike raced for the Pearl; the soldiers being repelled if they didn’t drop their weapons before boarding.

Once the King’s Chase had sunk, Jack sent out the longboats for any survivors, and had the naval men put in the brig. Bill shook his head. “Nothing good will come of this, that’s for sure.”

Jack looked over the splintered decking and fallen sails. “Mr. Gibbs! I want this all cleaned up and repaired by tomorrow. I’ll be in my cabin.” He gave the wheel over to Will and strode down the stairs to his cabin for a rest.

He walked into his cabin, not even bothering to look where he was going, moved automatically to his bed and lay down on it. He put his right arm over his eyes. “Why in the name of God does the British Navy never give up and go on its way safely?!”

“Probably because we keep hoping that you’ll finally see the evil of your ways and surrender.”
