Enemy Counterparts
I found this poem after I finished writing this story and thought that it resembles perfectly Rain’s personality after she’s turned. Enjoy!
Ode to a Goddess
by: Macbeth
Worship me Like the Goddess I am, Bow to me and give me your love.
Worship me for I am nothing like you, I am a Goddess and you’re nothing more than my sacrificial lamb.
Bow to me and give me your love for I am everything, I am as cold as the moon, as nurturing as the earth and as hot tempered as the sun.
I am the giver of life but to cross me means your life will be my sacrifice.
Do you think yan uan use my body and just leave?
Don't you know I can haunt your dreams?
Love me for the Goddess I am or get the fuck out of my face,
Cause all humans I could have erased.
I have never been a lady and I will never be your whore.
I will always demand something more.
Yet for all my flaws I am still better than you, for I am all woman
So worship me like the Goddess I am.
The end
Chapter 6: Enemy Counterparts
* A week later
The streets have become a wasteland. Death and disease reign in this region and what little lives are left become someone’s meal.
An abandoned mansion swarms with creatures of the night. Young lifeless bodies occupy the dark marble stairs. Inside music is blaring, feedings are taking place and the virus spreads. On the second floor, in the master bedroom Rain sits on her ‘thrown’. She named it that because it’s the one place where she feels like royalty. Somehow she controlled all these creatures that share her gift. How? Beats the heck out of her. All she knows is that she was given the power. Her life as she knew it is gone. Now her purpose is to rid herself of all weaklings; vampires and humans alike.
The time is growing near, the time to leave this safe haven and go out to the world they’d created and wreak havoc. Once the sunsets, she will lead her children outside and they will play.
Like a black cloud of death they follow her into the city, feeding on unsuspecting victims. Rain of course isn’t going to settle with any ordinary human being. She wants someone of power, someone who’s life energy she can benefit from feeding.
One of her children grabs a stubborn child. The boy kicks and screams causing a scene, something Rain dislikes very much. The vampire throws the child against a brick wall, temporarily knocking him unconscious. Then carries him away into the darkness. The silence comes too late; a male officer spots the nocturnal creatures and draws his weapon. Rain decides he will do just fine.
Officer Deacon Smith follows Rain into an alleyway. Deacon has learned of these creatures, but exactly how to deal with them is something alien to him. He knows following it isn’t the best idea, but goes against his instincts. She seems to have disappeared into thin air. Right in the middle of the alley his name is called and it echoes in the vastness. As fast and swift as the wind something nips him and keeps moving. Deacon shoots a warning and it ricochets on the walls causing sparks, giving the alley a split second of light. Before he knows it he’s knocked to the grownd by a tremendous force that sends him flying in the air. He falls on the ground dazed. When he looks up he sees a shadow creeping towards him. Rain seems to be floating on air. Her fangs extend, nails elongate and the smell of ammonia overwhelms Deacon. She moves her hand in a vertical fashion and Deacon stands up unwillingly.
“Deacon, your blood smells delicious. Your energy is intoxicating. Pity, you’re but a human. You’d make a superior vampire. Perhaps, that can still be arranged.” She says with a sneer. Her eyes go black and she licks her lips ready to strike, when someone knocks her off her feet. Deacon struggles to focus, but everything’s happening so fast.
Rain regains her composure and smiles. Slowly she stands up and faces her opponent.
“Nice to see you again Heidi” her voice full of sarcasm.
“Always a pleasure Rain.” Heidi relates with a snicker.
Both women study each other. In the past they’d been friends, but that seemed like a lifetime ago. Since neither is the same person, why carry on with old friendships. Besides, since their new life was bestowed on them Rain had changed totally; she’d lost her mind. Heidi knows there is no way she’ll ever be the same person and can accept what she has become, but she refuses to turn into a complete heartless monster like Rain has. Deacon looks at both women, trying to figure what’ll happen next.
Rain places her hands on her hips and says, “ Look at him. Is he worth it? Are any of them worth it? They’re put on this earth to sustain us, that’s all Heidi. Why live your life trying to protect the very same being we are meant to destroy?” her voice becomes more rigid.
Heidi looks over at Deacon and answers, “That’s what you’d like to believe, isn’t it Rain? It wasn’t that long ago, we were just like them, remember? Helpless, normal, happy and with simple lives full of love.”
Rain becomes annoyed, “Love? My dear sweet Heidi, are you telling me that you still have a heart? Or maybe this human means a little more to you than food supply.” Silence is her response. Rain takes a step towards Deacon and Heidi’s fangs elongate, her claws expand, her green hazel eyes burn with fury, even her red hair seems to be on fire. Rain stops abruptly, she knows that even she cannot intervene with this Nosferatu. The Dynasty, the same powerful beings that turned Rain turned Heidi. She couldn’t be touched, they chose it so and Rain knows it. This vampire, this Nosferatu isn’t controllable, but this doesn’t mean she isn’t persuadable. All Rain needs is time.
‘He lives for now’ Rain speaks so that Deacon cannot hear and disappears into the night. Deacon presses his back tightly against the wall, wondering why would a vampire fight one of their own to spare him? Unless of course this is one of those things he’d seen on the animal channel, where they fought for their food. If that’s the case, then this Heidi had won and he’s her prize.
“Don’t worry yourself so. I’m a friend of Jack” Heidi says, standing in the same spot.
“You know Jack? How?” Deacon still doesn’t feel relieved.
“Well, we will be eventually. I need you to do something for me though. I need for you to go to her side and protect her”
Deacon frowns, “From what?”
Heidi raise and eyebrow, “From herself” she says in a matter of fact tone.
She begins to walk away, then turns around “I’ll explain everything she needs to know.” Deacon finally pushes away from the wall and takes a few steps towards her. Heidi cannot sense any fear in this man, not even after he saw her transform right before his eyes. This intrigues her very much.
“How. . . Where can she find you?” he asks.
“She’ll know” Is all she says. Heidi places her hand on his cheek and sighs at the touch of his warm skin on hers. This human is different; he has an effect on her she can’t quite understand. Deacon feels it too. Heidi places her lips on his giving him a soft sensual kiss. Deacon feels like he’s in a trance. She pulls away but his eyes remain closed.
“See you soon Deacon” he hears her whisper and she disappears into the dark night.
To be continued. . .
