Chapter 6

Sam wandered through the crowds and snapped photos; she spoke to a couple of people and got some anonymous interviews. It was all the usual stuff, but she knew that it would have Jim nearly wetting himself.

She took pictures of the cars mostly and found herself at the edge of the starting line. She wanted some pictures of the actual racing.

God must have a wicked sense of humour, she thought bitterly as she watched a red Rx7 pull up and out stepped Dom. She knew now why Mia had reacted so strangely to her car.

Her car was almost identical to his except for the colour. She let out a bitter laugh and watched him.

Everything was as she remembered it; he stood in the centre of attention, guys wanting his approval, girls just wanting him. He laughed happily and interacted with the crowd.

She watched as he won his race, never really doubting that he would. Sam shook her head as she repacked her camera. She needed to get out of here and soon. Heading back to her motel room, Sam smiled, she had won her race, taken her pictures and now all she really wanted was a shower and possibly some sleep.

She opened the door to her room and grinned as she saw Mia’s back to her, she was sitting on the newly made bed.

“You still here?” Sam closed the door and walked over to the dark haired girl.

When Mia’s face came into profile she could see that she had been crying.

“Mia what’s wrong?” Sam burst out.

Mia glanced up at Sam and looked back down at her hands. Sam’s gaze followed her actions and that’s when she saw the contents of one of her bags on the floor. Sam backed away from the bed and only stopped when she hit the wall, with the wall behind her she slid down it and hit the floor.

Mia looked at her and Sam shook her head pleadingly.

“He’s beautiful.” Mia hiccupped through her tears. Sam was still shaking her head.

“What’s his name?” Mia asked through her sobs.

Sam felt her world come crashing down around her and felt her own eye’s fill with tears.

“Nicholas, Nicky.” Sam answered.

“How old is he? I mean I can guess but…” Mia trailed off.

“Six.” Sam answered bluntly.

Sam watched Mia stare at the photo in her hand and waited for her to say something. When she said nothing Sam began to speak.

“Mia, please don’t do this to me.” Sam begged.

Mia wiped at her eyes and stood up, Sam could see the determination in her actions and she knew that all was lost.

“You have to tell him.” Mia spoke clearly.

Sam shook her head defiantly and begged again.

“Mia, please. Don’t do this. We’re happy, can’t you be happy for us?” tears streamed down her face.

Mia looked torn for a second and then she straightened her shoulders.

“He has a right to know, you tell him or I will.” Mia looked miserable again and she approached Sam. Kneeling down in front of her she pulled her into a hug.

“I’m sorry Sam, but you can’t keep this from him anymore.” Sam returned the hug fiercely and sobbed into the young girls shoulder.

“Can I keep this?” Mia asked in a tiny voice, Sam knew she was talking about the picture.
Sam hesitated for a second and Mia continued.

“I won’t show him, not until you’re ready. It’s just for me, so I can have a photo of my nephew.”

Sam just nodded miserably and watched Mia leave.
