Bastards and Clinical Insanity
Protecting a Templar Legacy
By: Sheiado
Author’s Note: Well, I was originally writing this out for only a small exchange between Bors and Lillis, but then it progressed to more. They do need some interaction w/ each other, I do have to say (she is his great, great, great, great, great… okay, I’ll stop now, granddaughter lmao). Even though she doesn’t even know it yet but… So, this chapter is centered on this exchange… damn, I have such fun plans! (Ah, well. Maybe it’ll get done in the Next chapter, eh?). Please review ‘cause I can tell you know that it’ll get out faster that way!
Reviewers: *Squeals* You guyz are so COOOOOLLLLLL! Raife, Yes, I knew u would say that! lmao
Chapter Five: Bastards and Clinical Insanity
She hadn’t awoken that day until mid-afternoon and, knowing that she had a job to do and lots of work ahead of her, Lillis had reported to the tavern. It was still early and seeing that there were only two patrons present, Lillis sat absently down at one of the vacant tables, rubbing at her temples in a soothing rhythm.
Her headache still refused to vanish.
“Long night, eh?” A voice cackled from behind her. Lillis didn’t even have to turn around to identify the owner of that voice. It was familiar, and truly an unwanted sound at this point.
“Truly,” Lillis answered quietly, “But working here, I’m sure it is a long-going experience. And one big headache.”
The shadow that loomed over her moments ago moved to the side, its possessor taking a seat opposite from her at the table. “Well, try watching eight children and then you can start telling me about headaches.”
Lillis stopped rubbing at her temples to look up at the older man, raising an eyebrow. “You should really think about limiting your nightly activities then, Sir. Forgive my bluntness, but eight children are likely the product of stupidity for not keeping it tucked tight in your trousers.”
Bors laughed heartily for a good few minutes. “Aye!” wiping a stray tear from his eye, he continued, “They weren’t lyin’ about you, girl. I was told you were a fiery lass! Maybe you’ll last longer than the others. Most can’t handle it here for long… the only thing that kept my Vanora goin’ is her sass.”
“Hm… I certainly couldn’t tell that from meeting her,” Lillis replied sarcastically. Bors only smiled. Shouts seem to echo from behind the bar and Bors rolled his eyes before hollering, “You two pipe down and don’t get into any trouble, otherwise your mum and Miss Lillis ‘ere will be givin’ yas a good tongue lashing!”
“Let me guess,” Lillis spoke knowingly, “She wanted you to watch the bar and the children?”
“Aye, she did… and unfortunately I have no missions to use as a bloody excuse this time.”
Shaking her head in utter amazement, Lillis replied rather cynically, “And you have another one on the way? Do you really want to claim clinical insanity before you become an old man?”
Bors suddenly took on a thoughtful expression, one that made Lillis almost want to laugh. He looked rather comical when puzzled. “Well, I don’t know what this “clinical” means but I can definitely say tha’ me bastards will ne’er drive me to the brink of madness. I got Vanora for that!”
That last comment made Lillis chuckle. “Wow. She’d kill you for saying that.”
“Aye-“
“And the look on her face would be almost priceless.”
Bors smiled. He was beginning to like this new girl. She had a spunk on her own that put her opposite of most women… in fact; she nearly had the type of humor that reminded him much of his comrades. Lancelot would no doubt take to this one like a moth to a flame… and she’d more than likely extinguish him after, if he got too close for comfort, that is. *That* thought alone made Bors want to cackle with glee.
As silence prevailed over the small table, Lillis’ eyes caught a sudden movement from within the shadows. Following her gaze, Bors smiled. “Me daughter,” he explained abruptly, “Number Six.”
Lillis looked across the table at him like he had just grown three heads. “You NUMBER them!”
He shrugged innocently at the piercing glare she gave him. “It's just easier to remember ‘em that way. And they don’t mind too much of it.”
“I swear,” Lillis muttered, her eyes looking skyward, “Men…”
She looked back up to where the child was standing. “Is she shy?”
Bors nodded. “Aye, at times. She’s the different one outta me children, she’s a mute you see. The strange thing about ‘er is, she doesn’t really try to get attention like the rest of me little ones. We usually have to come to her, not the other way around. She likes to keep to ‘er self.”
Moving his eyes away from Lillis, Bors turned toward the shadows. His voice lowered gently, something odd from someone of his character. “It’s alright, girl. Come out and meet your Ma’s new friend. This is Miss Lillis.”
There was a brief hesitation, as the poor girl seemed unsure about stepping forward and then, attentively, she approached the table. A long mane of liquid red hair poured and emerged from the shadows, her head downcast as she sauntered toward the chair that her father vacated.
Lillis smiled softly as she gazed at her. “She's a very beautiful girl, Bors.”
“Aye,” Bors beamed, showing the side of him his comrades rarely, if ever, saw. Except Dagonet. He took immense pride in his children, even this one that was typically looked down upon as being an odd sort. He loved her all the same... “She looks like her mama.”
“That she does,” Lillis agreed whole-heartedly. The resemblance was certainly uncanny.
The child looked up from her father to Lillis. ‘Well, she isn’t that shy,’ Lillis thought to herself, impressed. She looked her in the eye without any hesitation, something a shy child would rarely do… normally they hide behind the parent.
The child cocked her head to the side and studied her quietly. She seemed to approve of what she saw in Lillis before turning her attention back to her father. Bors smiled, and ever so gently, he picked her up, sweeping her into his arms to plant her firmly onto his lap. The child didn’t seem to mind in the least and she leaned silently against him.
“She has been like this since birth?”
Bors shook his head. “Well, we’re not quite sure, actually. She cried when she was a babe and she hears like any other normal person, don’t ya love?... But, she just hasn’t really spoken at all. Or just wishes not to.”
Lillis nodded, smiling. “Well, I’m sure when she gets older she’ll be as lovely as Vanora is.”
Bors grimaced. “Hopefully she’ll look like her, but won’t get that fiery attitude that ‘nora’s famous for. I don’t think I can deal with two of ‘em. My poor soul can only take one-“
“TALKIN’ ABOUT ME AGAIN ARE YAS!”
More To Come! Please Read and Review!
