Chapter 6

Cesar didn’t know if it was the cold air coming in through the window or the bright light in is eyes but he awoke with a jerk. It took him a moment to remember where he was. He had not slept so heavily in months. He slowly remembered the night before and felt the empty space beside him on the couch. Only then did he realize that the radio was on and he sat up.

Sabine sat on the floor wrapped in Cesar’s white shirt. She looked like a child, sitting on her knees in the enormous garment, he toes peeking out from under her bottom. He smiled. Even with her back to him, he blond hair in messy waves down her back, he though she was beautiful. Who would have thought this sweet, delicate girl could be such a passionate lover? She had seemed skilled in a way that had surprised him. Just the thought of it made his body feel warm and he felt the need to wrap himself around her again.

“Sabine, what’s going…” he started, sitting up on the couch.

“Cesar, shhh, come listen,” she whispered turning to him. He pulled on his pants and sat on the floor beside her. She was staring at the radio, her eyes full of excitement and wonder. She looked as if she could see the person whose voice was at the other end. The narration was spoken quickly and in French and Cesar couldn’t pick any of it up.

“What are they saying?” he asked.

She turned to him and he saw that thin tears were streaming down her face

“De Gaulles’ army invaded Paris last night. They’ve liberated the city. The German’s have surrendered. City by city, all of France is being liberated.”

Her face glowed and new tears ran down her face.

They both listened to the radio, Sabine translating all the exciting news for Cesar and they held each other, unable to say more. There would be confusion and there would be sadness but neither one cared. The war that had changed both of their lives had come to an end and now there was a whole new world of possibility.
