Ch.6

“Constable Erikson, this court has found you guilty of the crime of murder. Have you anything to say before I pass sentence?” The judge asked in a severe tone.

Erikson stood silent and sullen in the docket. “Nothing then? Very...”

“Your honor,” Crane stood up. “I have something to say.”

“In his defense?” The judge asked incredulously. “The arresting officer has something to say in the criminal’s defense? Crane I know you are unorthodox but really...Oh go ahead. This trial could not get any odder no matter what.”

“Thank you your honor. Your honor you know my passion for reforming the criminal justice system in New York as well as anyone. It is not only that I find the means of solving crimes to be inadequate. Also I find many of the punishments for criminals to be barbaric, almost medieval. It would be wrong of me to abandon these principles because of any personal desire for revenge against the convicted. Therefore I ask that Constable Erikson not be punished under the most extreme penalty of the law.”

“Your request is noted, Constable Crane. I will give it due consideration and pass sentence tomorrow. Court is adjourned.”

Ichabod joined Katrina in the Gallery where they were met by Mrs. Erikson. She clutched a damp handkerchief and it was plain from the look of her eyes that she’d been crying. “Thank you, Constable Crane, for what you said just now.”

“Not at all Mrs. Erikson. I’m only sorry for what’s happened.”

“Do stop in for tea anytime,” Katrina put in. “If you need someone to talk to.”

“Thank you both. You are good, fine, Christian people.”

The agnostic skeptic and white witch gave each other an ironic look. But Ichabod only smiled at her. “We try to be, Mrs. Erikson.”

Katrina and Ichabod walked home arm in arm through the snowy New York streets. Katrina looked up at her husband as a thought occurred to her.

“Ichabod?”

“Yes, Katrina?”

“Am I very much mistaken or...did that judge actually listen to you?”

Ichabod’s eyebrows raised in surprise. “I do believe you are right, Katrina. Times are indeed changing.”
