Chapter 26 - Realisations

Barbossa nodded to Koehler who drew a dagger and cut the girls other cheek. The girl shrieked as the blade bit in lightly. Oria shouted out as Jack fought to speak also, barely restraining himself. Oria leapt up but Barbossa grasped her arms and held her back with a grin, he had found a weakness and one that he was more than willing to exploit.

“Give yourself up willingly without a fight and I’ll think about letting her live for a bit longer.” Oria’s jaw tightened visibly. Barbossa primed his pistol; she met his gaze levelly without blinking, “What’ll it be?” He sensed upcoming danger and shouted out, “If she makes any move at all you all have permission to shoot the girl ‘and’ Mr Sparrow.” Her teeth ground together and she dropped the concealed dagger to the deck with a frustrated glare and raised her hands. Barbossa glanced down at the dagger with a raised eyebrow; that was definitely a bit dirty even for her. This girl was something special to make her resort to such desperate measures.

“I admit defeat.” The words were snarled out viciously, he pointed to her belt.

“Remove any weaponry you have or I’ll get one of my men to do it.” The crew of the Pearl snickered hopefully. She glowered at him before slowly unbuckling her belt and dropping it next to her swords. She bent slightly and tugged two more daggers from her boots and shrugged her jacket off, he looked at it suspiciously.

“It would take too long to remove all the items individually. Just keep them safe or you will be sorry.” Barbossa grinned.

“Somehow I doubt that. Bring her effects.” He grasped her arm and led her back to the Pearl, “Irons, get me some irons you filthy scum.” She kept glancing back at Sara, as the girl was dragged along tears and blood mixing on her cheeks like some foul mess of whores’ make-up. Jack glanced at Oria curiously as she tugged against Barbossas’ grip angrily; Jack was beginning to wonder why she was pushing the limits. Barbossa spun her suddenly and clasped her hands behind her back as he clipped the irons about her wrists.

“Ah, not so tight you fool.” Oria glared at him over her shoulder, Barbossa merely grinned.

“Such skinny wrists got to make sure you don’t wriggle your way free. Wouldn’t want the crew getting their hands on you after all.” He ran a hand down her side mockingly, she writhed as angry as a stabbed snake. Elizabeth glanced to where Jack was being held, he looked just as furious, if not more so. Oria wriggled her way free of Barbossas’ grip and turned sharply, he grasped her upper arms tightly to stop her from getting any further away. Her head connected with his roughly and he gave a shout and clamped a hand to his forehead.

“Try that prank again and I’ll give you plenty of reasons to turn and run when you hear my name.” Oria snarled at him, Barbossa merely chuckled and nodded to Koehler again. Sara bit her lip as the pirate cut into her arm but didn’t shout out again. Oria shouted at the man threatening all sorts of profanities if he laid another finger on Sara.

“Such a feisty thing, no wonder Jack couldn’t resist.” His fist slammed across her temple harshly and she fell limply to the deck as a dark unconsciousness claimed her. Jack scowled and bit back his retort, Pintel grinned down as Barbossa pushed her to the side of the ship away from Jack and the rest of his crew.

“Keep them quiet and put that girl next to Oria to shut her up.” Pintel grinned and drew his pistol as he stalked around the crew of the Interceptor. Sara knelt next to Oria and brushed the stray hairs from her mothers face, watching with tears running as the bruise on Oria’s temple blossomed.

“If any of you as much as thinks the word ‘parley’ I’ll have your guts for garters.” Barbossa chuckled and looked at the prone form at his feet the small girl sobbing quietly and clutching at her mother desperately, everyone’s gaze turned to the Interceptor. Without warning it exploded with a massive force, the heat could be felt by everyone as the burning wreck began to sink into the ocean.

:/

“And the crew, the crew are not to be harmed.” Jack rolled his eyes resignedly as Barbossa strode forwards. He compromised that the deal might possibly include Oria and/or Sara but somehow he doubted either would get away so easily. Not now Barbossa knew the kid was a weak spot for her; it was something to valuable to toss away.

“Agreed.” Several pirates surged forwards and tugged Will down, dragging the pistol from his grasp.

“Miss Elizabeth will be released as soon as situation dictates until then you are welcome to enjoy the hospitality of the brig. Take them down men, the crew in one, Mr Turner in another, Miss Elizabeth next to his cell, our little Oria and that child can be chained to the wall but make sure they’re not within reach of anyone else, and Jack can be locked away in my cabin. Don’t want you planning any more ‘Captain’ Jack Sparrow style escapes now do we?” Barbossa chuckled as he watched Jack gave a weak smile and allow himself to be dragged off. Sara was watching him quietly tears still running down her cheeks. He longed to push everyone away and stop those tears from falling but he knew that if he did it would result in her death. The crew of the Interceptor were immediately herded down into the hold as the ship went on its way, it would take a day to reach Barbossas’ intended destination.

:/

“Mothers love!” Gibbs stepped away and ran a finger over his chest in the cross shape, Will and Elizabeth stared. All they could see was a very slender form and three long scars but something had spooked the entire crew on the other side of the ship as they looked at the prone form of Oria. Sara was curled up next to her, tears still running down her face and stinging the cuts in her cheeks.

“She’s so thin!” Elizabeth exclaimed, Anna-Maria glanced between Will and Elizabeth realising they hadn’t got a clue what they were seeing.

“Have you never heard of the De Monara pirates?” Elizabeth nodded but Will just looked confused.

“Yes I had a story book about them; they were a really famous pirating family that lived a long time ago, most feared in the entire world. But they all disappeared mysteriously nearly eighty years ago according to my father and the tales.” Anna-Maria nodded.

“Just as well in most people’s opinion, even pirates, they were bloody thirsty, took down ten Navy battleships in one battle with barely a scratch or so the story goes, and that’s one of the more pleasant tales in their history. You think the Pearls got stories; you’ve heard nothing until you know theirs. Sends shivers down even the strongest men’s backs. Don’t you know how they were recognised?” They both shook their heads dumbly.

“They flew a black silk flag with three slashes in it. Each member had three long scars made by tiger claws, one for the first kill, one for the first ship sunk and one for the first ship commandeered. They were always placed from mid spine to just above the right hip on women and from mid spine to above the left hip on men. She’s one of them… no wonder Jacks’ been so protective.” Gibbs nodded still staring at the exposed flesh of Oria’s waist which had been wrinkled up by the pirates tossing her down carelessly.

“Don’t blame him; most men would give their souls to spend even an hour with her.” Anna-Maria glared at him condescendingly, “Well come on, I mean honestly, what man could resist conquering a De Monara female, the most feared pirates of all time, never mind sire something on one! You could go around and say look at what I’ve got, a De Monara, the last one and she’s with my child! I mean seriously any man would give anything for the chance.” He bit back the comment about Jack actually having done it realising now just how much more dangerous it was to speak of it, but the comments hadn’t been lost on Sara. She was sat staring at her mother in awe. Elizabeth wrinkled her nose in distaste.

“No wonder she’s so hostile towards people if that’s all they see her as, a conquest.” Gibbs nodded.

“Aye well that may be.” Will frowned confused, he saw nothing special about her, she was just another girl.

“Aye well Jack doesn’t see her as just some De Monara wench. There’s always been something deeper there, some kind of bond. So don’t anyone go getting any bright ideas that Jack only wants her for what she is. We all knew her before we found out about the scars; we all knew she was a bit temperamental so nothing has changed.” Anna-Maria stated to all the crew angry that they should become so prejudiced against her because of a few scars and myths. Night fell slowly with most of the crew restless and deep in thought about the De Monara’s and the revelation of one surviving. The noise above deck dimmed with their own silence and they waited for the fateful rise of dawn.
