To love another...(chapter 6)
Authors note:
Hmm...not too sure about this chapter. Seems abit cheesy. Let me know what you think? Thanks for the reviews so far, they are really encouraging.
The day was bright and reflected the mood on the Pearl. All the trouble from last night seemed to have ebbed away, and Jack and Elizabeth seemed to be getting along much better. They were talking and smiling at each other, being friendly, but Jack had reminded Lizzie that she had promised him a proper conversation today. She looked him in the eye and nodded at him nervously. He decided to change the subject. He flashed her a mischevious smile,
"So what are you doing today me lady?" She thought,
"I'm not sure. I will probably just have a browse around the shops" Jack smiled at her again, a real smile. A genuine smile.
"Fancy going for a walk with ole Jack?" She stared at him for a moment, wondering if he had some ulterior motive. Revenge for the other night? He saw her doubt and frowned slightly.
"It doesn't matter love. If you dont want to..."
"No Jack! I'd love to," she said with a smile on her face. Jack, equally as happy, grinned too.
"Okay, give me a few minutes to sort everything out on deck then" and he walked off, shouting orders to the remaining crew. Ten minutes later, Jack returned to find Elizabeth leaning against the railing. He smiled at her and signalled for her to walk with him. They began following the winding path up a steep hill. Lizzie had never been this way before so followed Jacks direction.
"So when are we leaving port?" Lizzie asked carelessly, staring around her, noticing how beautiful this part of Tortuga really was.
"Late tonight, give the crew a few hours to...um...get supplies" Jack said hastily. Lizzie giggled slightly and caused Jack to look at her. She stared into his eyes but began blushing at the same time. The two of them were walking together, close, but not too close. A safe distance apart. They had been walking for about half an hour, when Lizzie stood still. She could have sworn she saw that house ten minutes ago.
"Jack?" She looked at him curiously
"Mmmm?" He seemed to be concerntrating on something, though what, she had no idea.
"Where are we going?" He seemed to be taking her somewhere which unnerved her slightly; Jack didn't have the best sense of direction.
"This way love-" He seemed to have found his bearings "Got something to show you" He led her up another hill and towards the opening of a patch of trees. He gestured on her to follow him. The woods was not deep, dense or damp, but bright and colorful. The sun poked through the gaps between the trees and illuminated the floor underfoot. They'd been walking through for several minutes, walking silently when they reached the exit to the trees. Lizzie stepped out first and Jack heard her gasp.
"You like it?" He asked, producing a grin which showed off several of his gold teeth.
"I love it!" She whispered, dumbstruck by the sight. Her and Jack were stood on a green patch of land, greener than anything else she'd seen in Tortuga. They were stood on a cliff, and down below she could see a sandy white beach she'd never even seen before. The view of the horizon was amazing, the sun was high up and sparkled on the ocean, making it illuminate a beautiful gold color. She had tears in her eyes and went to hug Jack, who looked slightly shocked and, if truth be told, scared at her sudden intimacy. He smiled warmly at her when she pulled away showing a smile and they both sat on the cool grass together.
"Thankyou for this Jack, I don't know what I did to deserve it"
"I just wanted to say sorry...for the other night you know? With the journal" He smiled shyly at her and she chuckled, leaning back on him. The two of them were content with just sitting and staring at the beautiful scenery. But after about half an hour, Lizzie twitched and found she had to say something.
"Jack, I really am sorry." He looked puzzled at the sudden, random statement.
"For the other night when I kissed you and ran, I just felt...I..." Jack held on to Lizzie tighter and she knew she had to do it, had to apologize. She atleast owed him that for playing with his heart.
"I panicked, I thought you knew how I felt about certain things and tried to get as far away from you as possible. I didn't want you thinking bad of me." At this, Jack definitely looked confused, he didn't have a clue what she was talking about.
"Lizzie..."
"Will, Jack! It was about Will! Our engagement hasn't even been broken off a month and I'm kissing another man. I was relieved, relieved he broke it off. I never wanted to marry him and I thought you" - she took a deep breath "I thought you would think less of me or think i was just another Tortuga wench." She looked down, embarrassed but relieved she had got it all out.
"Lizzie, I wouldn't think less of you just because you didn't want to marry young Will, I could never have imagined you tied down in Port Royal, sewing for a lifetime. And I have never, ever thought of you as a Tortuga wench. You're different to them Lizzie, I miss you, I worry about you but them...I havn't thought about them" He smiled down at Lizzie and she smiled back. I wonder if now is a good time to kiss her... He was about to act on him inner thoughts when she began to speak again
"Jack?" She looked red; flustered or embarrassed? He didn't know.
"Mmmm?" He said, brushing against her silky lips.
"How do you see me?" He looked up at that, not sure what she meant.
"I mean, what do you want from me? Why do you have me around?" Jack smiled at this, she seemed to be getting at something though not quite sure what.
"Because I love your company? And you're amazing and beautiful" She turned, if possible, even redder.
"So you don't just want me for....for...." She broke off, unable to say it, ashamed that she even thought such things about Jack. He was a good man, he wouldn't just bed her and then leave her. He wouldn't take her without permission. He'd do it soft and gently to avoid causing her pain...
"...You don't just want to...bed me, do you?" She looked at the floor, unable to look him in the eyes anymore. But Jack wanted to see her eyes, he lifted his hand to her chin and raised it until they locked eyes.
"Lizzie love, you're beautiful, you're smart, you're funny. Contrary to popular belief, I don't just bed every woman and ditch her. I don't want you to think all there is between us is sex. If all you want to do is cuddle, then I'm fine with that. It's your choice and I don't want to make it for you." At that moment, she smiled. A great smile that lit up her entire face, she hugged him close and pressed her cheek to his chest. At that moment she realized he loves me! The two of them sat there in silence for a long time, neither of them speaking a word, just cuddling. The sun was high in the sky and the day was perfect, neither of them had ever felt better. Lizzie had her eyes closed and was leaning into him, loving the heat his body was providing. Lost in her daydream, she suddenly heard Jack speaking. No, not speaking, singing. She had never heard his low so soft and sweet and she loved it...
"Aloha `oe, aloha `oe
E ke onaona noho i ka lipo"
Lizzie couldn't understand a word he was saying but the song was soothering and nice and she felt comforted hearing it.
"One fond embrace", a ho`i a`e au
"Until we meet again."
Jack finished, the lulluby and hugged her even closer. At that moment Lizzie knew, I'll never leave...
