Chapter 5: Reasoning:
The slamming door was all that Jack had needed to hear, the screams… he accepted, the mutual slaps, he accepted…
But as the door slammed, he knew he was needed.
And so he went, finding the youth outside her door, on the ground, asking himself what he had done.
Jack sat down next to him, smiling slightly, “You saved a young woman from a dreaded, terrible faith that everyone should be spared off, and you did so selflessly.”
The words, as well as the person they came from, startled the blacksmith, who looked surprised, “Then why…why do I feel so crazed for doing it all, for her?”
Again, Jack smiled, “You thought it was love mate… And the heart hates it when it’s disappointed”
Will looked at the elder pirate, nodding slightly, “But…I do love her” The elder gave another smile, “I don’t doubt that you have loved her William, and that part of you still does, however, your strumpet seems less than keen to return the affections you need. It’s time to move on mate. Next port to come, we’ll let her go, until then, we can simply avoid her as much as possible”
Will had been looking at the pirate, noting the deliberate use of ‘we’ in the sentences the captain spoke, “Why can’t she understand?”
At this, Jack sighed softly, “She can’t imagine the length of the torture you endured William, she doesn’t care to… See, what I think it was, least from her side, was a notion of a forbidden adventurous romance with you, but now that she has it, she doesn’t want it anymore. It’s peculiar the way women work like that, ain’t it mate?”
As Will briefly nodded, Jack continued, “Now, what I think is that she was in love with being in love, but found the being in love lacking of the love she expected, therefore felt that being in love with you didn’t quite fit with her loving fantasy pictured in her mind, and fell out of love, if she was ever in love in the first place rather than wanting to be. Savvy?”
A confused look spread over Will’s features as he tried to simplify what Jack had just said, “You mean to say that she was in love with the idea rather than with me?”
Jack smiled, “Aye!”
Will nodded, “Perhaps you’re right Jack…she refused to help me, when you’re in love…you shouldn’t have to think twice about doing that”
Had the youth been looking at Jack, for a brief moment he would have seemed a worried face, a face afraid to have been found out, but the elder was quick to mask the moment of doubt, nodding simply, “Aye William, that’s very true. In our kind of love. What your bonnielass needs is…indeed…someone as”
A shiver ran down his spine, nausea rising as he continued, “Norrington. So all she needs to be doing is sit and look pretty for him, a selfish love they call it among us pirates, a love that doesn’t truly deserve to be called such”
Will nodded, hugging himself softly, “I would have loved her…”
Jack nodded in reply, “I know you would have mate, just wasn’t meant to be… There will be others for you William”
A shiver ran through the youth at that, “I’m not sure I’d want others Jack, who would want me? I’m ugly…vile…disgusting…useless… worthless…”
Lips pressed to his shut him up as his face was cupped in rough calloused hands, the touch was odd compared to a woman’s, but, yet… His eyes widened in realization as he felt a tongue trace his lips, he pushed, backed away, “Jack! Why would you do that? You promi”
And again he was silenced.
Though now, it was his speech interrupted by the captain’s, “Why? Why would you want to know why, need there be reason to give for a reasonable action used through reasoning out of reason to silence you while you were unreasonably talking yourself down, losing all sense of reason?”
A blink.
“Very well William. I kissed you, just now, to show you that you are none of those things you say you are, to prove to you that you are beautiful, and cared for. And, because I lov…lost…my own reason in the moment”
