Chapter Six: This Doesn’t Have to Be the End
***
Troy laid in his bed, stomach touching his sheets and arms wrapped around his pillow. He sighed. There was no easy answer to how he was feeling right now. His phone vibrated. It was Ryan.
“Hello,” he said.
“Hey,” Ryan said. “Can we get together and talk?”
“Sure,” Troy replied. “Come over to my house.”
“Now?” Ryan asked.
“Yes now,” Troy said. “Call me when you get here. I’ll let you in.”
“Okay,” Ryan said hanging up the phone.
Around twenty minutes later Ryan arrived at Troy’s house. Troy let him in and they went up to his room to talk.
“What’s up?” Troy said sitting down on his spinning desk chair.
“I just wanted to say sorry,” Ryan said. “For not trusting you and thinking you were going to go back to Gabriella.”
“Don’t be,” Troy said. “It’s been tough. This whole thing has been tough. I just need to let you know something.”
“Okay,” Ryan said. “What is it?”
“I’m starting to fall in love with you,” Troy said. “But, I’m already in love with Gabriella.”
“Oh,” Ryan said.
“So,” Troy continued. “I am trying to figure out which one of you I want to be with. I don’t want to hurt you so you need to know that I feel I have to make this decision. About what’s right for me.”
Ryan sighed, “Okay.”
“I hope you can understand that,” Troy said. “I really am falling in love with you. But I can’t help how I feel about her either.”
“I guess I can’t do anything but understand,” Ryan held back his tears. “I have to go.”
“Ryan,” Troy tried to stop him but he was out the door.

Sharpay and Chad stood together by Sharpay’s locker talking and flirting. Chad was leaning back on the lockers next to Sharpay’s while she looked at herself in the mirror.
“I’m still not sure Shar,” Chad said. “If we do this then we might ruin Troy’s life.”
“We aren’t going to ruin it,” Sharpay said. “We will make it so he doesn’t have to hide it.”
“But,” Chad said. “It just doesn’t feel right to me. He’s my best friend.”
They headed to the cafeteria. Sharpay and had were up were the theater kids usually sat.
“Attention everyone,” Sharpay yelled loudly.
Everyone quieted down to look up at her. Troy was down sitting by himself and Ryan was at the theater kids table.
“I have an announcement to make,” she yelled. “My brother Ryan and… Troy Bolton are dating. Yes my friends, Troy Bolton is dating another man.”
The crowd stayed quiet and looked at each other back and forth. No one was sure how to react to this unusual news.
“Gabriella,” Taylor whispered. “Is Troy really dating Ryan? Is that why you two aren’t back together?”
“No,” Gabriella said.
Troy got up and ran out of the cafeteria to the rooftop. Ryan’s mouth dropped. Gabriella got up and walked up the stairs to Sharpay and Chad.
“Well if it isn’t little miss rejected,” Sharpay said. “What’s up?”
Gabriella took her fist back and punched Sharpay. Sharpay fell to the floor. Chad helped her up.
“Gabriella,” Chad said. “What is wrong with you?”
“What is wrong with you two?” Gabriella yelled, “Do you get some sick and twisted pleasure out of ruining people’s lives? And you Chad! How dare you do this to your own best friend?”
“Are you confirming what I already know is true?” Sharpay said hiding her pain from the punch.
“No,” Gabriella said. “Attention everyone! Sharpay’s words are absolutely false. I know this because Troy and I are still together. So how can he be dating someone else? Right!”
Ryan snuck away. The crowd sighed and began talking to each other again.
“I’m out,” Gabriella said.
“Not so fast,” Sharpay turned as Gabriella walked past her and grabbed her hair. Sharpay pulled her back and they both fell to the floor in a struggle.
“Stop,” Chad yelled trying to pull Sharpay off Gabriella.
Taylor made her way up to where they were in an effort to get them apart as well.
“What is going on here?” Ms. Darbus yelled.
The girls stopped.
“Both of you get up and march to the principal’s office right now,” Ms. Darbus yelled.
The two girls looked down as they took the “Walk of Shame” out of the cafeteria followed by Ms. Darbus.
“Weird,” Chad said. “What a day.”
Taylor slapped Chad and stomped away.

Troy was sitting on the bench on the rooftop. Tears were streaming down his cheeks.
“Troy,” Ryan said.
He looked over at Ryan but said nothing.
“Troy,” Ryan said sitting down next to Troy. “Troy. I’m sorry that Sharpay said that.”
“Why’d you tell her?” Troy said, “I thought we agreed to keep it to ourselves.”
“I didn’t tell my sister,” Ryan said. “I don’t know how she figured it out. We just weren’t careful enough I guess.”
“Ryan I can’t do this,” Troy said. “I just can’t. This has become too complicated and it’s risen my stress levels way too high for me to handle.”
“I understand,” Ryan said. “But you must know. People don’t think we’re together.”
“They don’t?” Troy asked.
“Gabriella punched my sister,” Ryan said. “Then told the whole school it’s not possible for you to be with me because you were with her.”
“She said that?” Troy smiled. “Wow.”
“So,” Ryan said. “I guess the decision has been made for you. You get her.”
“Ry,” Troy said. “I really don’t know what to say.”
“Say nothing,” Ryan said. “I understand. All things have to end sometime.”
“Who says this has to end?” Troy said, “I was going to choose you. I love Gabriella, but I’m in love with you.”
“I’m in love with you too Troy,” Ryan began crying. “But I can’t let you do this. You care what people think of you, and since you do, I do too. So I can’t be with you Troy. I just can’t.”
Ryan got up and left. He headed down the stairs away from Troy.

“So how much trouble did you get in?” Troy asked Gabriella as he walked her home.
“Sharpay and I agreed to say that we were practicing a scene for the school,” Gabriella said. “And you know Ms. Darbus.”
“Yeah,” Troy said. “When did you become such a fighter? I never would have guessed you would do that.”
“I guess you do crazy things,” she said. “When you’re in love.”
“I guess so,” Troy said. “So I guess we’re back together then. There is no getting around that.”
“I’m sorry,” she said.
“Don’t be,” Troy smiled. “I’m happy with us being together.”
Troy kissed Gabriella.
