Uninvited

‘Indeed boy, oh shit indeed. What a lovely home you have.’

I drew my courage together and laced my fingers with Druex’s. “Thank you. So do you prefer Mason, or Adelphos?” I asked and the shadow took shape, the form of a man. But there was nothing human about what I saw. His skin was waxy looking, his eyes a dirty red color, his blonde hair stringy and dirty looking. He looked almost emaciated and all I could think of was a rotting corpse. “Or Addy?” I said and his lips pinched in a tight grin.

You are smarter than I gave you credit for little witch.’

I snorted and tried to think of a way to get the evil bastard out of my house. “Gee thanks. You look way past your expiration date, how come you didn’t die when your body did?” He snarled and paced the inside of the circle, snapping and snarling like a rabid animal.

‘Because your bloody kind trapped my soul in an eternal purgatory. Cursed me to know only pain and darkness for the lives I took.’

“Sounds pretty fair to me.” Reid said and I nodded. “Me too. So what Mason, you want to move on or something?” He laughed at me harshly.

‘I want to destroy your kind, eradicate your plague of evil from God’s earth! And when I kill you, it will be so sweet…’

His eyes actually closed in bliss and his hands fisted at his sides. ‘So very sweet.’

“So you’re going to off yourself in the process. Good, save me the trouble.” I said and his eyes snapped open, the dirty orbs glowing brighter with his rage.
‘To kill myself would be akin to suicide, a cardinal sin. Why would I do that?’ I shrugged and looked around the room, seeing all eyes focused on Mason Shaw, eyes black, hackles raised, ready for a fight. “I just thought since you were a witch too, your plan to wipe the planet of our kind included yourself in the mix.”

‘I AM NOT A WITCH! I AM NOT SATAN’S SPAWN!’
He roared and I wiggled my finger in my ear.
“Sure you are, you can recognize the power of other witches, and you condemned them to death. You splashed holy water on a child who trusted you, smiled as she screamed for you to save her. And you could have, but you did nothing. You‘re nothing but a coward and a child molester.”

He roared again and I felt the gathering of his power, felt it build and build. He drew his arms back and before I could think to move or prevent the blow, Druex had thrown himself in front of me, his back to the circle, arms wrapped tightly around me, shielding me with his bigger body. Time slowed and in no more than maybe one second I heard the shattering of glass, a shout, felt Druex jerk, felt him spasm, and I looked up into his beautiful eyes. Eyes that were round with shock, with pain. The air left him on a little moan and his arms loosened from around me. I gripped his shirt with both hands and followed him down as he slid bonelessly to his knees. “Druex?” I murmured, feeling a terrible rending of my soul as the powerful glow in his eyes started to fade. “Love you.” He whispered hoarsely and then…I watched him die.
