The Cook Out
Chapter 7: The Cook Out

~~~~~ SUNDAY AFTERNOON ~~~~~~
Dom was already outside cooking on the grill, Vince went on a beer run and Leon was helping out with the table and
bringing the stuff out from the house.
Jesse got there in no time with his dad. Going thru the side of the house the first he sees is Dom.
“Dominic!” Jesse yells from his excitement making his way towards Dom
Dom turns around and sees Jesse coming towards him, he gets a flash back from that day. He remembers the feeling of helplessness when he tried to get to Jesse but wasn’t fast enough.
His thoughts are broken as Jesse jumps on him like a little kid would with his dad. And Dom kind of took that role for a
while in his life.
“Dad hurry, look it’s Dom, he’s back” Jesse’s dad makes his way to the back of the house and shakes Dom’s hand with respect.
“I’m glad to finally meet you Dom, all my son ever did was talk about you and all you did for him, I thank you”
“No problem Sir, it was my pleasure” “Jesse how are you, how you feeling kid”
“Oh Dom I’m good, just happy to see you again man” Jesse says with his goofy grin.
As they are speaking Vince gets back with the beers and puts them in a cooler they have outside.
With the corner of his eye Dom sees a green Jeep Grand Cherokee pulls up in the driveway of the house and parks. He is still
speaking with Jesse but is also looking to see who gets out of the car. He was very edgy lately and coming home had only
made it worse.
Mia comes out of the house towards Dom and Jesse. She looks to see what has Doms’ attention.
“Oh good the girls are here” Mia says walking towards them
“Those are your friends Mia?” saying a little more relieved.
“Yup”
Mia greets the girls and starts to introduce them to Dom and Jesse’s father.
“Dom this is Coco, Lisa, Mini and Eva I met them in school” They all shake his hand and greet him.
“Dominic Torreto is your brother, interesting” Mini says to Mia but never taking her eyes off Dom.
“What’s stereteresting about that?” Dom says. Mini begins to laugh amusingly
“What’s so interesting about that?! Before we came to California for school we lived in Jersey, we used to race
there and in New York and the talk was about this ‘Street King’ and how he was unbeatable. Your like a fucking
urban legend man”
“He knows he is Mini” Eva says with obvious attitude in her voice looking at Mini then turning to Dom,
“But I bet you don’t get tired of hearing it”
“Well I’m not an urban legend, I assure you I’m quite real, but I don’t race anymore” Dom says looking away
towards Mia.
“Too bad, I would have loved to beat the Infamous Dominic Torreto” Eva says while she eats a burger never making
eye contact with Dom.
Dom turns to look at her, the others aren’t really paying attention to their conversation.
He sits directly in front of her and says “What makes you think you’d beat me?”
Eva looks up from her plate and raising both her eyebrows says very calm and collected, “Because now I’m the best”
This makes Dom smile and gives that deep thunderous laugh. “Your cute, I’m gonna have to watch you”
“You do that” she says returning to eat.
The rest of the day went pretty smoothly, everyone was having a good time eating, drinking and talking.
Jesse found Lisa very interesting they both knew a lot about cars he hadn’t held an intelligent conversation about cars with
a girl since Letty left and he had to admit she was cute.
Mia was telling Dom about school and her grades and she notices Mini flirting with Vince and she tells Dom pointing with
her nose towards their direction,
“I bet you those two get together”
“Old Coyote? Nah” Dom says shaking his head
“OK $50 bucks says they do” Mia says extending her hand
“Your on sis” and they shake hands.
“So what do you think about my friends Dom”
“They cool” he says taking a sip from his Corona.
“Just cool?”
“Well all except that Eva chic, she’s trouble Mia”
Mia starts to laugh hysterically
“What so funny?” Dom says frowning
“I knew you were gonna say that, because you and her are just alike”
“I’m not like her, you can tell she’s used to having it her way, besides she’s got an attitude problem”
Mia gives him a look that tells him he just proved her point and Mia walks away, leaving him to think.
‘She is like me. Damn I hate when she’s right’ He looks towards Evas’ direction and she is laughing with Coco.
What was wrong with him this is a person who rubbed him the wrong way and yet he was attracted to her. There was no
way he was gonna fall for this woman, he needed to get Letty back it was the right thing to do. He still loved Letty and after
all he put her thru he couldn’t just abandon her.
Around 11pm Jesse and his dad left home. Eva and Coco helped Mia clean up. Mini and Vince were still talking and flirting
while Dom was talking with Leon and Lisa.
“You should come by the shop Lisa , I’m gonna need some help at the garage and you sound like the perfect
person, that is if your interested in working for me” Dom said with his best business voice
“ Am I interested? You have no idea, thanks I’ll be there,” Lisa said trying to contain herself.
Coco, Eva and Mia come out of the house, “ You guys ready to go?” Eva says loud enough for everyone to hear.
“Yeah it’s late, see you tomorrow Dom” Lisa says waving as she walks. Eva looks towards Mini who acknowledges her
and Eva gets the hint.
“We’ll wait in the car for you Mini”
“Be right there” Mini says as she keeps talking to Vince.
The girls say their good-byes to Mia and the rest of the team. When it’s Eva and Doms turn to say good night to each other
Dom simply looks at her and she stares back.
“Maybe I’ll take you up on that offer some day,” Dom says rubbing his shaven head.
“You mean racing me?” Eva says with an intrigued smile.
“I have to defend my throne, or did you think I’d just hand it over like that because I’ve been away”
Eva nods her head; she examines his face trying to figure him out. Putting her hands on her hips and looking at him up and
down she says,
“Wow you coming out of retirement for me, I’m honored”
“Don’t flatter your self honey, I never turn down a challenge” Dom says with a stern voice.
Eva gets really closer to his face enough for him to smell her hair and says “Neither do I” with that she turn and leaves to
the car.
“Mini lets go!” Eva says over her shoulder not turning around
Dom stays there looking at her walk away ‘Damn she is fine!’ he thinks as he turns to go inside the house.
Everyone leaves and Dom, Mia, Leon and Vince go inside and call it a night
As Mia goes in her room she yells out to Dom from across the hall and says,
“By the way Dom I told Eva she could help me at the store from now on, hope you don’t mind good night!”
“What!” Dom said as he was getting dressed for bed. Mia shuts the door and Dom knows thats the end of the conversation.
Dom sits on the bed and thinks ‘So I’ll be seeing more of Eva, not necessarily a bad thing’ as he smiles to himself.
