Chapter 6: A Fooled Heart

Toby rubbed his arms, shivering. He wished that Calathia had given him something warmer to wear... but it couldn't be help, so he contd ond on his way through the Labyrinth. He had finally reached a strange, dark forest, and he could faintly hear the sound of drums behind him. "How much time is left?" he asked aloud, and to answer him, a clock appeared hanging on a treebranch by his head. "Four hours... I can still make it."

Jareth watched Toby from several yards away, reclining lazily on a low branch. He smiled softly as Toby drew nearer to him. 'Such a beautiful little thing...' he sighed to himself. 'Perfection is so rare nowadays.' Moonlight filtered down through the leaves, castinadowadows over Jareth's eyes and strange patterns over his entire body. He was dressed in a plain shirt that was only buttoned up halfway, and the moonlight carrassed his chest. Toby was now standing right underneath him, looking around himself as though trying to decide which way to go.
Jareth slid silently from the branch and landed gracefully and noiselessly behind the boy. He sthtedhted and watched him quietly, one hand balled against his hip, the other toying with a crystal ball. Finally, Toby turned, gasping when he saw Jareth. "...it's you...," he whispered.
"...how observant of you." Jareth smirked. He began a slow circle around Toby, watching him quietly. "...how you've turned my world, you precious thing...," he grabbed Toby's arm and roughly tugged him closer. "You're starving, exhausting me... Everything I've done, I've done for you." He released Toby, who stumbled back, a frightened expression dancing in his eyes. "I move the stars for no one... You've run so long; you've run so far." He grabbed Toby's chin and moved in until their noses were nearly touching. "Your eyes can be so cruel...," his hand slid down Toby's arm swiftly, tearing the material. "Just as I can be so cruel," Jareth laughed as Toby ran his hand over the shredded material. "Though I do believe in you...," he sighed. "I live without the sunlight, and I love without your heartbeat."
Jareth rested a hand gently on Toby's cheek, rubbing his thumb over Toby's cheekbone tenderly. "...I can't live within you."
"What do you want?" Toby asked softly, calmly, never moving to push Jareth away from him.
"...it's what you want, Toby. It always has been." Jareth smiled. "I'm feeling rather generous, Toby."
Toby stiffened and his eyes narrowed. "...then I'd better watch out."
Jareth laughed, clapping Toby's shoulder appreciatively. "I've decided to grant you a wish!"
Toby looked at Jareth from the corner of his eye. "...any wish I want? No tricks?"
"Well, any wish except one that will change your position in the Labyrinth." Jareth smiled. "Though I can't blame you for being suspicious."
"How is that going to help me?!" Toby growled, exasperated. "...I wish I knew why you were so horrible...," he muttered.
"What's that? Was that your wish?" Jareth smirked.
"No! No, it wasn't at all!"
"Oh, I distinctly heard I wish, Toby." the king laughed. "Well, I thought I'd been nothing but kind until now, but if that's your wish..."
Toby opened his mouth to protest, but Jareth was already gone... A small, crystal ball was lying in the place Jareth had just been standing. He leaned down and picked it up, examining it carefully. And then the world dropped away...

The boy was handsome, that was certain... His blonde hair was neatly cut, framing his frace in gentle waves. He sat on a brown-stone bench, staring out of a window that overlooked a beautiful courtyard full of people milling about. His clothes were simple, but elegant, and his manner was that of any carefree youth's... Yet something about him was sad. Without fully realizing what he was doing, Toby crossed the room in a daze to sit beside him. The boy must have been about eight or nine... A beautiful little boy that any mother would be proud of. As Toby watched, the youth folded his arms on the window sill and leaned his chin against them, sighing heavily, the blue color of his eyes deepening.
Toby watched him quietly for a few more moments, wondering what he could possibly say to ease the boy. Finally, he decided to pass the time by looking around the room. There was a little, circular pit in the center full of pillows and blankets, and a large, elegant thrown on a dias before that. The walls were lined with what looked like benches, as though millions of small people were meant to fill the room. Toby glanced back at the boy, who was still staring forlonly out of the window. "Are you okay?"
The boy didn't answer. He simply straightened a bit and stretched, yawning. Toby frowned a little and moved closer. "Hey..."
"Prince Jareth." Toby and the boy looked as one towards the only exit of the room, which led off to a stone staircase.
"Yes?" the boy responded. His voice was still a child's, but it had a quality of maturity to it.
Toby stared at the boy in awe. "You're Jareth? You look so innocent..."
"Your father wishes to see you...," the man responded. He was dressed in very simple clothes, but he carried himself well.
"...why?" Jareth responded, losing interest in the window.
The man sighed and crossed the room to grab Jareth's arm and pull him to his feet. "It doesn't matter why. Just do as you're told."
"Don't treat him like that!" Toby yelled, jumping to his feet. "He's just a kid! He doesn't know any better!"
The tall man didn't respond. He simply dragged Jareth swiftly out of the room. Toby was nearly jogging to keep up. 'They can't hear me... It's like a bad movie...'

Finally, the trio reached what appeared to be a dimly-lit ante room. A stately man, possibly in his 30's, was sitting patiently at a large, oak desk watching as Jareth seated himself. Toby stood protectively behind the boy, though the room unnerved him. He could barely make out the walls in the gloom...
"Jareth, it's time you learned the ways of a king." The man was soft spoken, but his voice carried easily. Toby shuddered... It was as though he was sitting right beside him was he spoke, even though he was several yards away.
"...why?" Jareth picked at a thread on his sleeve. The man sighed in obvious disgust and ran his hands through his hair.
"Because I have grown weary of this world. I have grown weary of you. Soon, I am crossing over."
Jareth stared down at his feet quietly, biting his lip. Toby stared at this man in shock. 'How could a father say something like that to his son?'
"Does that mean I'll be king, then?" Jareth looked up, his eyes suddenly looking very hard and distant.
"Of course." the king sighed, massaging his temples. Though he couldn't have been more than 25, the king seemed old... It was in his movements and hordsords. "Eternal life... At first, Jareth, it sounds wonderful... But once you've lived for 700 years, you'll understand that it is truly a curse, and then you will choose death."
Jareth shrugged coldly, standing. "Are you done?"
"You are a spoiled child!" the king snarled. "Be gone from me."
With that, Jareth turned and left the room swiftly.
Toby followed him, jogging to keep up. '...I want to hold him...' he realized suddenly. 'I want to hold him and comfort him... It has to hurt so badly.' As he ran, his view seemed to blur and shift, until he was falling...

Jareth, who seemed older now -- possibly 13 -- was lying on a large, canopied bed covered in white and red. He stared silently up at the ceiling. Toby crossed the room to sit beside him, wishing against everything that, even for a moment, he could offer some consolation to the child. Jareth turned and looked right at Toby as though he could see him clearly, but Toby knew he was invisible to everyone in this world -- no, this memory. The boy's eyes were red, and his cheeks were pale and slack... 'He's been crying...'
The door opened, and the tall man from before entered quietly. "Your father is dead, Jareth." he smiled softly and walked slowly to the bed, seating himself elegantly beside Jareth and gently rubbing the boy's back.
"Leave me, Rodrick." Jareth pushed the man's arm away.
"...you think that just because he's dead now, you can order me around?" Rodrick turned Jareth's face towards his and kissed him roughly, his hands roaming over the boy's torso. Toby stood from the bed, backing away a few feet. "You think you, by yourself, can lead this land and control the beasts in it?" He pinned Jareth to the bed easily. Toby could see tears wellingthe the boy's eyes and spilling over as Rodrick continued his attack, tearing Ja's c's clothes until his small form was completely vulnerable.
Toby covered his mouth as tears filled his own eyes, backing away from the horrible scene... He heard Jareth cry out as that horrible man took him, so callously... 'It's not right... It just isn't right...' He covered his ears with his hands, but he could still hear that poor child's cries and sobs. 'It isn't fair...' And then he tumbled backwards, the picture melting away like candle wax before him.
Black satin flew around him, and he grasped at it as it enclosed him and slowed his decent until he was lying upon a soft bed in a dark room. It was as though the entire world was only this bed, and the rest was darkness... The stone floor simply melted into darkness a few feet away from the bed. Toby gasped and sat bolt upright, his hands clutching the satin sheets beneath him. Jareth, still a young boy, sat at the end of the bed, watching him. "It's not fair." the boy whispered, an ironic smile upon his lips. "...but that's the way it is." Everything faded away and Toby found surprisingly peaceful sleep in that black world...

Someone was singing softly... A warm hand was stroking his cheek, and his head was in the person's lap. He opened his eyes slowly and was unsurprised to see Jareth, as he knew him, gazing down at him. Jareth's song was low and sweet... It reminded Toby of stars. He closed his eyes as Jareth comforted him, and he realiveryvery suddenly that he was crying. He hid his face in Jareth's thigh and gave into the sobs... Still, Jareth sang.

There's such a sad love
deep in your eyes
a kind of paled jewel
open and closed within your eyes
I'll place the skies
within your eyes

There's such a fooled heart
beating so fast
in search of new dreams
a love that will last within your heart
I'll place the moon
within your heart

As the pain sweeps through
makes no sense for you
Every thrias gas gone
wasn't too much fun at all
But I'll be there for you
as the world falls down
Falling... Falling...
Falling in love.

I'll paint you mornings of gold
I'll spin you Valentine evenings
Though we're strangers til now
we're choosing the path between the stars
I'll lay my love
between the stars

As the pain sweeps through
makes no sense for you
Every thrill has gone
wasn't too much fun at all
But I'll be there for you
as the world falls down
Falling... Falling...
Falling in love.

The edges oflitylity were clouded... If it wasn't real, Toby didn't care. All he wanted was to lie in this man's arms for eternity, a frozen image of peace... To lie pressed against him, sleeping, or awake, it didn't matter -- just close to him for the rest of time, and beyond. He sat up to kiss Jareth's lips softly, his tears slowing. Jareth returned the kiss easily... They were no longer two people... They were one being, moving in harmony, looking into each others' eyes and knowing what was going to happen. He felt Jareth's arms slide around his waist and pull him closer, kissing him more passionately, deepening their bond until they were just two colors, sliding into each other until a new hue was born.
Jareth gently undressed Toby, starting with his shirt. His fingers moved against the buttons slowly and softly, as though all that mattered was grace. And when the shirt was gone, he explored every inch of the newly explosed flesh, kissing and touching and gazing... This body was amazing to him, and he wanted to know every line, every curve by heart. It wasn't even sexual... It was just love, personified in two beings. He ran his fingers over Toby's soft, pink lips, tasted the skin of his cheek and chest and stomach... He ran his hands along Toby's spine, and suddenly he was aware that Toby was doing the same to him. He paused in his ministrations to watch the boy's progress, smiling softly.
They were on their knees now, embracing, lips parting to find tongues, hands seeking out more flesh, more secrets... Jareth leaned his forehead against Toby's as they explored each other, slowly losing more clothes until they were finally naked... It was flesh and flesh, warm and soft and everything beautiful.
This act was the sunset, it was a cloud of feathers, it was silk, it was honey, it was gold... It was everything Jareth had ever sought in a partner, and more. Hours seemed to have passed as he carefully prepared Toby, and an eternity passed as he slid slowly into him, warmth surrounding him... Soft hands first on his shoulders, then suddenly around his back as a little gasp fluttered past his ear. Jareth wished he could make it painless for the boy...
And then they were joined completely, legs tangled, each holding the other so closely, noses touching ever so slightly. They moved in perfect unison, whispering meaningless promises and sighing. It was not incredible sex, but it was fulfilling -- and Jareth had never had that before. He knew he could never have any other kind as long as he lived.
They climaxed together, and Jareth shivered as Toby hid his face in the crook of his neck, whimpering and moaning. Jareth burried his face in Toby's hair, groaning deeply as he filled him. And then they fell into each other, Toby's hands running in slow circles over Jareth's back, and Jareth kissing Toby's forehead and cheeks. They gazed into each others' eyes, both wanting to say that beautiful phrase, but knowing they couldn't -- not yet.
Finally, Jareth pulled away from Toby, regretting the loss of that gentle warmth. Toby sat up, giving him a puzzled look. The king simply smiled and shrugged.
"Is this real?" Toby whispered. "Are you really the goblin king, and not just... not just some fantasy?"
Jareth smiled softly and leaned to kiss him. "...it's very real... You have two and a half hours left."

The scene simply faded away and Toby found himself standing, fully clothed, in the center of the goblin city.
