Chapter 6

A/N: I’m making up all this stuff about how much room a hundred pounds takes up; I haven’t got the slightest idea. I write this for amusement value, not historical accuracy, but if anyone wants to tell me how far off I am, I’ll listen. On with the show…

“All right, luv, what are you up to?” It was after closing and Anna was sweeping the floor. Jack had waited all night to find out what her secret was.

“Why should I be up to anything?”

“Because you let your cousin drink for free all night. What happened to him, by the way?”

“Oh, I poured him into the gutter along with the rest of them. Serve him right if he got stepped on, or worse.”

“Appealing idea, that. But don’t change the subject.”

“I didn’t.” She relented, because she was getting too tired to argue. “I’m going to give him what he asked for, but not in the way he thinks. How heavy is a hundred pounds?”

“In sovereigns, you could carry it away. In small coin, you’d need a wheelbarrow. He ought to know he won’t get sovereigns from you, though.”

“Well, that changes things a bit. But I’ll get him. How big a bag would you need for a hundred pounds in sovereigns?”

“Oh, a flour sack would do it. What’s in your head, luv?”

“I’m going to give cousin Alfred a flour sack with something heavy in it.”

“Not a hundred pounds, I assume.”

“Not even close. I may throw some spare change in just so it makes the right kind of noises, but that’s all he’s going to get.”

“So what are you going to give him instead?”

“You’ll see. You don’t keep a cat on the Pearl, do you?”

“No, and what’s that got to do with anything? This plan of yours is starting to sound complicated, and that’s not always good.”

“Don’t worry, it won’t come back on you. The worst that can happen is I end up with a mess all over the floor, because if the plan doesn’t work I’ll stab the bastard myself.” She had become considerably bloodthirsty since Alfred had appeared, and it worried Jack a bit. He knew women who would slit a man’s throat as soon as kiss him, sometimes both at the same time, and Anna shouldn’t be one of them. She wasn’t made to be a murderer, and Jack didn’t want to see what it would do to her if she stepped off that ledge.

“Leave the murder to me, luv. You go on with the plot, though. It sounds like a good one if it comes off properly.”

“Oh, it’s good, all right. I just hope I see it when it gets sprung on him. That’ll depend on how greedy he is, though.”

“I wouldn’t worry, luv. You’ll see it.” Jack couldn’t dance around it any more. “So what, exactly, are you going to see?”

“If I told you, it wouldn’t be a surprise. Trust me, though, you’ll like it.” Anna leaned the broom in the corner and stretched her arms out over her head. “Shall we go home now?”

“After you, luv.”
