Jacks Death

Chapter 7; Jack’s death

Looking at her nou cau can’t tell she’s different, but she is. Rhianna plays house with her little brother Ryan. She’s only four years old, but looking into her eyes you would say she’s very mature. Ryan is already displaying the same quality in the way he acts to different situations. Any other two year old would be getting into trouble; instead Ryan plays in unison with his big sister. Jack sits quietly contemplating her children. Nothing is as soothing to her than to watch her little angels play. Lately however her calmness has grown weary. Something inside of her is changing and she can feel it, everyday it grows more and more. Her nightmares are more constant and more vivid than ever. She’s tries to hide it from Riddick, but she knows he’s no fool, he can sense the change in her.

Riddick received a call from Doctor Oxfeld and the good doctor decided to give them the results in person. Not good. As Jack waits in the patio, Riddick paces in front of the house. Saia and Jason can feel the tension. They haven’t been told anything except, that Jack hasn’t been feeling well and the doc has news for them; good or bad.

Minutes later Oxfeld arrives at the Riddicks’ household. Jack hears Riddick speaking to the doctor and decides to go inside. She tells Jason to watch the children and he complies knowing that this conversation is for grownups only. Oxfeld takes a seat in their living room and places a manila folder on his lap. Saia brings over some coffee and cookies in a tray.

Oxfeld quickly gets to the point, “I’m afraid there’s no easy way to say it. Jack the night that Riddick found you in the back porch, you say you don’t remember anything?” Jack nods, “Not even how you got the scars on your neck?”

“No, nothing” she clarifies.

“There’s a virus. . . Well its far worst than a virus I’m afraid” Riddick grows inpatient. “You see there isn’t a cure for it yet” the doc stalls.

“Doc, what is wrong with my wife?” ick ick says in an eager tone.

Taking a deep breath the doc continues, “On the far side of Belloso a terrible disease has been spreading. One that at first was only thought to be spread by air. The local authorities worked together with scientist and it was believed to be contained. A search of the area indicated that no one was contaminated. However recently a new breed of humans has arisen. Vampires.” The doc seems hesitant of his own statement. Riddick looks on indifferent. Jack’s face is one of ridicule.

“What are you saying? What does this have to do with me?” Jack says impatiently.

“I believe that, that night you were infected by one of these creatures and now you too will become one of them” Doc says seriously.

Jack is filled with laughter, she stands up and walks towards a window, looking at Riddick and Saia.

“WHAT! You must be joking. Riddick tell me you don’t believe this crock of shit,” her voice is menacing and her body language is defensive.

Oxfeld simply pulls out some paperwork from the folder and hands them to Riddick, “See for yourself” he sits back down waiting for Riddick to study the files. Riddick scans through them quickly. His face shows no emotion.

Jack fidgets where she stands. Saia remains silent.

“Are you telling me that no matter what I do, Jack will become one those things!” Jack moves up to her husband and snatches the paperwork from his hands. Inside are her vitals, showing that according to her readings she should be dying. Also there are pictures of some victims of the virus. Jack gasps when she sees some of them with fangs, their eyes that of corpses. Her hands become shaky and she drops the files, pictures scatter throughout the floor.

“Jack” Riddick holds her in his arms and she seems to calm down, long enough for them to sit. Jack looks behind them through the screen door, her children playing innocently.

“There’s a few things I must warn you about. Things that you will be facing, changes in your body which have already begun” slowly so that they understand every word, Doc explains to them in detail what to expect and what to look out for.

“There has to be something we can do” Riddick’s voice is pleading.

The doc thinks on it for a moment, “If there is a way, only the creatures themselves would know it, and they don’t seem too keen on friendliness”

“Only one way to find out” Jack says surprising Riddick. She looks at him and he smiles with approval. They would set out on this journey together. He’d do anything to save his wife, even if it meant fighting the dead.

The next day, Deacon arrives unannounced and he’s welcomed by everyone. Jack remembers the mental note of calling him and finds it peculiar that he showed up before she even got the chance to call him. The children play with Deacon for the first half of his visit. After dinner the kids retire and Deacon sits down with Riddick and Jack. He tells them of his encounter with the vampires. Jack is baffled. She cannot even begin to imagine where she met this Heidi before. Nevertheless how to find her.

Deacon offers to stay until everything is sorted out and Riddick and Jack agree. He takes the guest bedroom by the stairs. Riddick and Jack decide its time for bed, retiring for the night.

They make love for hours. Exhausted and drained Jack falls to sleep in Riddicks’ arms where she always finds comfort. Riddick finds himself thinking about everything Doc said. Holding Jack in his arms proves to be more nourishing than he thought possible. She’s been so fragile in the past few days that he’s beginning to think that maybe he is going to lose her. Never; he thinks. He begins to drift off as well, when Jack begins to spasm and scream violently. The entire house wakes up and they all run into her room. It takes Riddicks’ whole body weight to keep her pinned on the bed. Saia calls Doctor Oxfeld immediately.

Hours later, after Oxfeld calms her and sedates her, he informs Riddick of the worst. Jack is dead, her heart has stopped. But for how long, is unknown.
