Chapter 7
Chapter 7
Sam managed to crawl to the bed; she pulled herself on top of it and slumped into the middle. Her life that she had worked so hard to make for herself and her son was going to crash down around her, and all she could think of was how she had first met Dominic Toretto.
**
Sam entered the garage and headed towards the voice of a man shouting; since there was no answer she assumed he was using the phone. She hung back a bit and stared at him. He was good looking for an older guy, think brown hair and beautiful tanned skin. So this was Anthony Toretto, the Racer.
Sam was 19 and in college, majoring in journalism and sports but cars were her passion, to her parents despair. God how she wanted this job, last summer she had interned at a newspaper and it was great but this year she needed something different. She looked at the man in front of her and sent up a quick prayer.
Mr. Toretto barked something else down the phone and then turned; he spotted Sam and gave her a questioning look.
“Mr. Toretto? I spoke to you on the phone yesterday I’m Sam Watson.” She held out her hand and almost cringed when he just looked at it.
“Tell me why I should give you a job over all the boys I got coming round here looking for summer jobs?” He asked bluntly.
Sam made a decision then, she wasn’t going to cower to this man, and she wanted this job.
“I’m sure the boys would be great to work with, of course I won’t spend half an hour in your bathroom after checking out your calendar.” Sam looked at the calendar on the wall; of course, it was of naked women draped over cars.
“Look, I’m hard working, I will help out in the office and the store, whatever you like, in return for you letting me work on the cars with you.” Sam spoke bluntly after seeing Anthony still smiling at the calendar.
“Why would I need help in the office and store?” Anthony asked, still smiling.
“Well I’ve got a better phone manner that you for starters.” Sam snorted.
Anthony looked at the little slip of a girl in front of him and laughed out loud, maybe she would be able to hold her own. God knows he didn’t want someone in the garage crying every five minutes because the boys were rude.
“You’re hired. You fuck up, you’re fired. Simple.” He informed her.
Sam beamed at him. And Anthony shook his head, she was a pretty little thing, he didn’t know about summer kids spending time in the bathroom, he was more worried about his son and his friends.
“Can you start now?” Anthony asked.
“Sure.” Sam put her bag in the office and Anthony followed her in.
“You can start in here, just tidy up a bit and we’ll see what happens.” He expected outrage or at least some dirty looks but Sam was still beaming.
“Okay, is there anything you don’t want me to touch because this place is a mess?” Sam spoke bluntly and turned to look at Anthony.
“Anything you like sweetheart, just don’t throw anything away.” Anthony left her to it and returned to the garage.
A couple of hours later Sam had worked her way through most of the filing, the desk and the cardboard box for deliveries and orders, she shook her head, how did anyone find anything in here?
Anthony Toretto was one of the hottest Racers in town and maybe one of the best mechanics but she didn’t know how he did it, she was amazed that he could even find his chair.
The door opened and Sam looked up from her place on the floor. A young girl of about twelve was standing there with big eyes.
“You cleaned up!” she exclaimed, amazed.
“Someone had to.” Sam snorted.
The young girl laughed and sat on the floor near the door.
“I’m Mia.” She introduced herself.
“Hey Mia, I’m Sam, the new girl.” Sam smiled.
“The office looks great.” Mia spoke shyly and Sam took pity on her.
“I’m about due for a break, how about we go get a drink?” Sam asked as she stood up, Mia jumped up and nodded enthusiastically. She linked arms with Sam and they set off to get a soda.
While they were sat at a counter, Anthony approached.
“I see you met my baby.” He ruffled Mia’s hair and grinned when she immediately started to try to pat it down.
“Get some overalls on and come out to the garage when you’re done.” Anthony smiled at the girls and walked away.
Sam grinned at Mia, and almost laughed at Mia’s shocked face.
“We’ve never had a girl work here before.” Mia said stunned.
“Well I guess this is a new thing for everyone, I’ve never worked in a garage before.” Sam whispered conspiratorially. Mia giggled.
Sam made her way out to the garage after she had found overall, they were huge but she had pulled off her shirt, which left her in a vest top and she had the arms of the overalls tied around her waist.
“Mr. Toretto?” Sam called when she didn’t see him.
“Christ don’t call me that, I feel old enough as it is. Call me Tony.” He answered as he came out of a side room.
“So you know anything about cars?” He asked going back to the blunt voice again.
“I helped my grandfather in his garage before he died.” Sam answered honestly. After all that is where the passion had started.
“Good, so you’re not a novice, well get under there and tell me what you think.” Tony pointed to a BMW that was over the pit. Sam nodded and quickly made her way under the car.
