A month passed by and Alexander still had his jealous grip over Hephaistion. Cleitus continued to court Hephaistion in secret, by sending him secret notes through passing servants. Hephaistion’s belly grew even larger as the month passed by. Olympias was thrilled, only two more months and she would be a grandmother. Alexander still favored spending his nights with Bagoas. Hephaistion finally gave up on his plight to persuade Alexander that that whore was up to no good.

Hephaistion was sitting on a bench outside on the balcony reading one of the notes Cleitus sent to him, when Olympias interrupted his solitude.

“Hephaistion, Hephaistion, I have come to check on you,” she said with bright eyes and she found him on the balcony.

“I am well Olympias,” he greeted with a smile.

“Where is your snake, “ she questioned.

“Alexander doesn’t want me to wear it anymore, it bit him.”

Olympias narrowed her eyes, “He can be stubborn at times, I’ll have a talk with him.”

“Talking with him does no good,” Hephaistion said while standing, “He won’t listen to anyone.”

Olympias placed her hands on Hephaistion’s belly and closed her eyes, “He is well Hephaistion.”

“That is good to know, now he just needs to get out, “ he said with a smile.

“Will you join me for a walk,” Olympias questioned.

“Thank you for the offer, but I must decline,” he said while yawning.

“Its understandable,” she said while leaving.

Once Olympias left his room, he wrote his reply back to Cleitus gave it to a passing servant outside his room and went to sleep.


Hephaistion awoke to arms encircling around him, lovingly, not possessively, and when he opened his eyes he met those of Alexander’s.

“Tired my love,” he questioned in a soothing voice.
“Yes,” Hephaistion replied with a slight nod.
“Well, maybe if you weren’t sneaking out and about at late hours of the day you wouldn’t be tired when the sun is high up in the sky.”
“What,” Hephaistion questioned dumbfounded.

Alexander took a piece of paper from the side table and unfolded it reading aloud what it said.

My dear Cleitus,

Your praise of me is truly undeserved. Thank you for the kind words. I will meet you at the designated place and time for today.

Yours truly,

Hephaistion.


“Alexander, please.”

“No Hephaistion, didn’t I tell you to stay away from him? How long as this been going on behind my back? The whole month that passed by? I love you Hephaistion, would you forsake the love I have for you over Cleitus?”

“Alexander.”

“No, I should of done this the first time he set those eyes on you at the meeting room. I am sending him away, sending him away from you and my palace. He is a threat to the happiness of our family Hephaistion, don’t you see that?”

“I see many things Alexander, and one of them is right in front of me. An Alexander that I do not know, a Alexander that I did not fall in love with. One that desires what he wishes and doesn't recognize the desires and feelings of others. I do not see Alexander the Great before me, I see Alexander the self centered bastard. Do what you will with Cleitus, the view I have of you remains unchanged,” Hephaistion said while holding back tears that demanded release.

Alexander was speechless as Hephaistion left the room with those words.
