Hanging out

While we drove over to Shadow's house we talked about normal stuff. She told me how she was a doctor and was fresh out of medical school. I wasn't really sure what I wanted to do and I was nearly out of high school.

“Don't worry,” she said. “What you want to be will just come to you. You'll know what you want to do when you get out of high school. You shouldn't think on it too much.”

“Yeah you're right,” I said as we turned onto a road that looked like it lead out of town. “I guess you had a hard time finding a place.”

“Fuck ya,” she said smiling. “I ended up moving into my dad's old place. I almost forgot it was up here.”

I looked at her with a surprised look. Did she just say her dad's place? That meant Freddy's old place. I thought they burnt that to the ground.

“What is it?” she asked.

“I...well...uh...” was all I could get out.

“Oh,” she nodded. “I know what it is. You don't feel comfortable being in the same house that a child killer lived in right?”

“No no,” I said. “I just thought they burned that down.”

“Hell no,” she laughed. “That place they burnt down was just were he dead most of his killing and abusing. We had a pretty nice house out here. If they burned that the worth of the other houses around here would have gone done.”

“Oh,” I whispered. “That's makes sense.”

“Can I ask you something?” she asked.

“Sure,” I said.

“Why are you friends with me when no one else will come near me?” she asked.

“I don't care who your father is,” I answered. “You seem nice and I'm not going to hold something you can't help against you.”

“That's totally cool,” Shadow said nodding. “I wish more people were like you.”

“Me too,” I laughed.

Shadow pulled up in front of medium size house. It wasn't nearly as big as mine but it looked cozy. It needed some work. The front yard was overgrown with weeds but it looked like someone had been pulling some of them up. Two of the upstairs windows were broken but besides that the house looked great.

Shadow turned off the car and got her bag of medicine. I left my bag in the car and got out. Together we walked up to the front porch. Shadow frowned when she saw the broken windows. They must have been new.

“Damn kids,” she cursed as she pulled out her keys and unlocked the door. “They keep doing stupid stuff like that.”

After Shadow opened the door we walked into the house. I looked around and my eyes went wide. She hadn't been lying about the boxes. The living room was packed with them.

“In the kitchen is in there,” she pointed to a door on the other side of the hallway. “You can help yourself. I need to take a quick shower.”

“Ok,” I smiled.

“I'll be upstairs first door on your right if you need anything,” she said and let the bag of pills down on the coffee table.

“Alright,” I said. “But I'm sure I'll be fine.”

Shadow nodded and walked off down the hallway. When I was sure she was out of sight I picked up the bag of medicine. I knew I shouldn't be going in there but I couldn't help it. I was interested to see what she was on. What I saw made me raise both my eyebrows.
