Loyalties
Kendra came almost immediately to check on her, a little surprised she had found her way back to her room on her own. After being reassured many times that Kylie was fine, and finally being ordered to get herself moved into where she was to be staying, Kylie was left alone in her room.
She untied and carefully removed her shoes, setting them into a box. She sat down on her bed, head resting in her hands.
One hand reached to unpin her hair before unclasping her necklace. She looked at it in her palm, a finger absently tracing the intricate engraving. She let her mind wander, but was interrupted by the sound of her door opening.
“Ever hear of knocking” She said with a frown, not looking up.
When the person said nothing, she set the necklace down and looked up to see exactly who she had expected.
“What?”
“How did you know?” Riddick crossed the room to stand closer to her.
“I just did.” She looked up at him, shrugging. “Sometimes I just know things. You’re a Furyan.”
He nodded slightly, pulling a chair closer and taking a seat.
“Not surprised.” She said softly, more to herself then to him.
“What does that mean?”
She just shook her head. “Not now…I’ll explain it, if you want, but please…not now…”
He just looked at her for a long moment, then got up and walked out, quietly.
As he left, she listened for the door to close before she rose, stripping off the gown, and slipping between her sheets, a hand clutching the pendant to her chest. She lay there and fell asleep.
Chasing, running, dark hallways filled her mind.
“Get back here girl!” A harsh man’s voice demanded from somewhere in the blackness behind her.
She ran on, leading the man through a darkened kitchen, and right into the arms of another guard.
“NO!!!”
She was startled awake, the nightmare making her scream into awareness. Her head whipped one way, then the other as she came to her senses, slowly realizing she wasn’t alone.
Standing next to the light in the corner of the room was a woman in black. As she pulled her sheet around herself, she looked again, realizing it was Dame Vaako who stood there.
“What the hell do you want?” She growled at her, standing with the sheet wrapped around her shoulders and body, and crossing her room to get a robe.
“Why are you here?”
“Excuse you?” She tied her robe around her, tossing the sheet back onto her bed, her necklace back around her neck.
“Why are you here, why did you say yes when he asked you? How did you know there was poison in that glass?”
Kylie looked at the other woman for a very long moment, measuring exactly what she would say. She knew this woman was behind the poisoning attempt. Whether or not she knew that Kylie knew, and whether or not she could prove it, those details were still up in the air.
“You want him gone.” She chose to not say how true she knew that was, and made it sound like she was speculating out loud. “You want power, for yourself, your husband, or someone else you can control. You’re not the first. You certainly won’t be the last.”
The icy glare she received was enough to know that she was on the right track. “Allow me to make this perfectly clear to you.”
She crossed the room, standing face to face with Dame Vaako. She was shorter then the other woman by quite a bit, but something about her caused the other woman to back off a step. “My loyalties lie with Riddick. I will not betray him, and I will do everything in my power to ensure he comes to no harm. I do not care about your posturing, about your conniving, about your plots and plans. Nothing you can say or do will sway me in any way. However, the day I find something you do is intended to hurt him, the moment I know for a fact you are the one who is trying to kill him, then is when you are in deep trouble. I will not hesitate to strike you down where you stand, and I will go through the whole Necromonger army to do it. Now leave my rooms immediately.”
Her last words were hissed out at the woman, and she fled the room, slamming the door behind her.
She adjusted her robe, tightening the belt so it covered her chest better, and turned towards the shadows near the bathroom door. “You can come out now Kendra.”
The young woman slipped from the shadows shyly. “I’m sorry for listening in, but she was there when I came out. I was running your bath Kylie.”
“Where do you stand Kendra?”
“Kylie?”
“When it comes to Riddick, and myself..where do you stand?””
Kendra looked at her for a moment, then opened the bathroom door for her. “I am loyal to you, as you are my mistress, and the kindest person to me since I came here a year ago.”
Kylie nodded. “I’m going to bathe and find Riddick, I need to talk to him. Set out my flight suit for me, then you can go on and do whatever else you want.”
“As you wish.”
Kendra shut the bathroom door behind her, and Kylie settled into the steamy water. She dreaded talking to Riddick in a way. She knew he might not be too happy with her when she told him, but he had the right to know. How she knew what he was, even back when they first met, how she knew about the poison, and part of the reason she accepted the pilot job.
She sighed as she finished her bath, standing and drying herself. She wrapped her robe back around her and headed back out to her bedroom.
She sat down on her bed as she braided her hair, then dressed, the necklace hanging outside of her flight suit. She then made her way to the throne room, carefully picking her way through the people in the halls, getting there undisturbed.
There weren’t many people in the room, but she spotted Dame Vaako on the balcony, where she gave Kylie a glare that would have frozen another person’s blood. Kylie merely gave a falsely sweet smile and turned to where Riddick sat.
“Good morning sir.” Her voice was all business, and she took her position beside him where he sat. He grunted at her, and during the next few hours, she simply stood beside him, or followed him as he went about his business. She could tell he was bored, she didn’t need to read his mind to tell that.
