ambush
O'Kain ascended the stone stairway with alarming speed. Riddick somehow managed to stay close behind. They burst into the moonlite night to find a female sitting on the ground crying. A large man dressed in filthy clothing stood over her with a sword in one hand and a dagger in the other. O'Kain raised his rapier and pointed it directly at the man. He walked forward, declaring a challenge with a voice both steady and unsettling.
"Stand away there man, what be the cause of this woman's pleas? If it be ye that hath brought such terror to a defenseless female be ascertained thou life hangs in the balance!"
The big man did not move. "Who the hell are you?" He demanded. "I suppose it dosen't really matter since you two are together." Riddick noticed many other figures stepping forward from the shadows. "Where in the fuck did you get that crossbow baldy? I had a good friend that had one just like it." The big man asked in a tone that spoke to him already having known the answer.
"I got it off of a piece of shit that had in mind cutting my throat while I slept. He only got face to face what he would've done to me while I was fast asleep," Riddick answered before adding. "Anyhow, shithead, it's really none of your business. Now why don't you be a smart boy and move away from the lady there like my friend asked."
Riddick counted eight of them in all. Some were common bandits but most were former soldiers. Tronas had suffered much from a ten year war. Peace had reigned for more than six years but many of the former military had grown used to a life of raiding and killing. Instead of going back to the honest but hard life of a logger or miner they had continued doing what they already did best....murder and mayhem. The term Ronin came to mind. This might be a little more difficult than going up against ordinary bandits, Riddick hoped O'Kain was the badass he looked and sounded like. His finger tightened on the trigger of the .45.
The big man glanced at Riddick and smirked. "We got guns too asshole." Then he motioned to his companions, three rifles were raised and leveled at the bald outlaw.
"I'll not be asking you again to stand away from the woman, if you value your worthless life!" O'Kain's voice was both demanding and confident. The big man glared before raising his sword as if he would behead the helpless female. "Fuck you, freak," he shouted. "I'm killin' this stupid bitch right now!" Those were his last words in this world.
In a blinding instant the strange avenger was upon the bandit leader. The big man leaped backwards to a defensive posture but it was to late. The long rapier was buried to the hilt in his chest. Sharp metal dripped red in the virgin moonlight as the blade protruded from the shocked man's back. His eyes opened wide and he shuddered from the sensation of cold steel passing through his body. Blood flowed from his gasping mouth as the big man's brain struggled with the realization that it was now dead.
For a brief instant the other assailants paused, astonished at the ease their leader had been killed. On the other hand Riddick didn't hesitate. He threw up both the crossbow and the .45 and fired. One of the men armed with a rifle fell with two shots to the head, while a companion dropped his firearm to grasp the arrow lodged deep in his chest.
Riddick felt hot lead whizz by his ear as the loud report of the last rifle cut the night. Instantly he brought the .45 up and squeezed the trigger but the weapon jammed. Piece of cheap made Tronasian shit. Damn! Riddick hurled the useless thing with all his might at the rifleman. The bandit stepped aside and the pistol flew past. Cooly he aimed and...... The smell of gunpowder and smoke filled the air as O'Kain's pistol cracked. The thief with the rifle fell dead, shot between the eyes. The strange avenger filled his hand with another pistol and fired, killing another attacker.
Riddick heard a scream behind him and jerked aside. He yelled in agony as a razor sharpe dagger ripped across his back. The bald man wheeled to see the assassin struggling to rid himself of the woman who held on to his leg, her arm bleeding with a knife wound. Riddick brought the crossbow down hard on the filthy man's head. The bandit was driven to one knee by the blow but as he went down he lashed out with the blade, cutting into Riddick's boot and nicking the flesh inside. The bald outlaw grunted again before crashing the crossbow with all his might against the head of his foe. The crunching sound of breaking bone gave Riddick satisfaction as the bloody knife fell from the dead hand of its owner.
The woman had saved his life. Riddick gave her a quick nod of thanks before turning to help O'Kain.
There was no need. O'Kain stood over a bloody mess that had been a man. The rapier had cut him from shoulder to waist. The ancient stones of the pavillon dranked heavily of the fresh human blood that flowed so profusely. Only one bandit remained and that one had fled when his leader, the big man had died. Riddick could hear his frightened footsteps as the man ran for his life. It was over.
"That last man was a fair swordsman, a man with military training perhap." O'Kain turned to Riddick. "Ye be wounded man!"
"I think I'll be ok," Riddick said. "Just got to stop this bleeding and get some rest. I got some friends close to here. They've got some medical supplies and no doubt they're wondering about what the shots were about. I need to go to them. I can't tell you two what to do but we got some food and it appears the woods around here are stinkin' with bandits. We might be able to use some help." The last sentence was meant for O'Kain.
"There is much I need to learn about this odd world. I would be more than willing to lend my swordarm to your clan for a time... if ye would likewise help me by telling me more about the likes of a place such as this."
Riddick nodded then turned to the woman. He didn't really need a tag-along but the woman had saved his life by hindering the backstabber. "Would you like to go with us?" He asked. We're bound for Merryville, can't offer you much except something to eat and protection for as long as it takes to get where we're going.
"Thank you so much," the woman said. "These bastards killed my husband and his friend. We were going to Merryville to look for easier work than the mines. They jumped us and ....raped me. I got away but they found me, that's when you guys showed up." She picked up the dagger that had wounded Riddick. Then she yanked a rifle from the dead hand of another attacker. "If any man ever tries to do again what they did to me, I swear I'll blow his fucking brains out!"
Riddick had no reason to doubt her. Only a few minutes before the three had been total strangers, each coming from a different world and culture; one from a different time. They walked away as comrades in arms. Lately life was had become interesting again...at least that's how Riddick saw it.
"What's your name?" Riddick asked the woman.
"Christina Aguillara," she answered. For the first time Riddick noticed how cute she was with her blond curls....and those tits were downright huge for a tiny little woman. Also, even in the moonlight his keen eyes easily spotted that sexy pair of plump, pierced nipples. Yeah, life was gettin' real fucking interesting all of a sudden.
"Stand away there man, what be the cause of this woman's pleas? If it be ye that hath brought such terror to a defenseless female be ascertained thou life hangs in the balance!"
