Still Waters

Book 3

Chapter 7

For the entire afternoon, Aubrey kept Sam occupied enough to not want to go home right away. If Sam had seen his father’s hand made dinning set gone, he would have been devastated. She didn’t have the heart to do that to him, not today. She pulled to a stop at last outside the door of her parent’s home, and elegant three level brick home, with white trim around the windows, and two white columns standing guard at the front door, the grounds decorated by manicured shrubs and elegant flowers.

The door was opened by the housekeeper, her job requiring her to wear the ridiculous maids uniform, complete with white apron, now dotted with juice remnants possibly from the making of dinner.

“Master Samuel, your grandparents have not returned yet,” the older woman stated. “I’ve been instructed to help you with your school work.”

“You don’t have to Martha,” Sam replied. “Mom helped me.” He then turned back to the open truck door. “You’ll still pick me up won’t you mom?”

“I wouldn’t miss it. Bring your laundry, I’ll teach you how to wash your skivvies.”

“MOM!” he laughed.

“Just kidding. Where are your grandparents anyway?”

“Not sure. They just said yesterday that they were going away for a bit.”

“Martha?” Aubrey called, “Where are my parents?”

Martha turned her gaze to her feet, refusing to reply. “She’s been told not to talk to you,” Sam stated sadly.

“Well that’s silly,” she sighed, it was typical of her mother to treat the staff like they were nothing. But a new low the have them extend that treatment to her. “Well, fine, she can tell her feet. Then she can honestly say she told me nothing. She only told her feet.”

Sam watched as Martha chuckled. “Very well, Feet, if you must know. Mr. and Mrs. Renalds have left for Germany for a dinner. They will be back tomorrow around noon.”

“Just in time for the 2 pm sitting with the judge,” Aubrey muttered.

“…But they could not take Master Sam, because they passport office would not issue a passport for him. Mrs. Reynolds is his grand mother, not his mother.”

THAT really infuriated Aubrey.

Kal watched as Aubrey’s heart rate increased, along with her blood pressure and her vocal tone. What ever this Ger’mny was, it was obviously something that she didn’t want or son exposed to. Another reason to get the two of them away. Even as a clan member, he knew not to expose the offspring of another mated pair to something that was questionable. He gently purred to Sam from his side of the vehicle, but he doubted that he heard him, once his mother began to speak.

“LOOK AT ME WOMAN!!” Aubrey shouted, and the female at the door to the house looked up. “ARE YOU TELLING ME, THAT MY MOTHER TRIED TO TAKE MY SON OUT OF THE COUNTRY? WITHOUT MY PERMISSION OR KNOWLEDGE?”

The female looked back to her feet. “That is correct.”

“Sam, you best get inside. There’s gona be words said that you really don’t want to hear.”

“Mom, don’t worry about it, I’ve heard them all from grams anyway.”

“WHAT!”

“Sorry mom, but I have, and don’t worry, I know you don’t want me to use them so I don’t.”

“Martha, the moment my parents are back in this time zone, you call me! I want to talk to them BEFORE the court appearance.”

“Yes ma’am.”

“You’re going to court tomorrow?”

“Yes baby, the first of many I’m sure. You may want to skip tomorrow. The proverbial Shit is gona fly.”

“OH NO! I wouldn’t miss you putting grams in her place for the world. I’ll be there!” She gave him a hug, but was not prepared for what he whispered to her. “Mom, you still need money for the lawyer. Can you handle it?” Kal cocked his head to the side. She hadn’t told him about the table and chairs being gone. Why?

“Martha, can we have a minute?” The female bowed her head, and stepped back inside. “Sam, I do have the money for the lawyer. As soon as I leave here, that’s were I’m going – to pay him.

“The thing is, until last night…I didn’t have the money.”

“Oh mom. You didn’t do…you know…THAT…did you?”

“Oh no. God no. I’d never sell out myself…that would be just the ammunition that your grandparents need…even if it was for only one night. No sweetie. I had to sell something else. Something that I SWEAR I will get back when this is all over.”

“What?” he asked, but as his mother’s silence wore on, he realized what it was that she had to sell. “The dining set?” Aubrey nodded, her eyes filling with tears.

“I had to baby. You’re more important to me than that set. But I swear, I’m gona get it back.”

Sam pulled his mother close. “Its ok mom,” the boy cried with his mother. “I know you will…grams would never do something like that if she was in your place. She’d let me go. I’m glad I mean more to you than a table and chairs, even if dad did make them.” Aubrey held him close, smoothing his hair, and wiping her tears.

“Ok,” she sighed at last. “You best get going, Martha probably has your dinner ready. I don’t want it to get cold on you.”

“Ok, mom. I’ll see you tomorrow at the court house?”

“Just try and keep me away.” She gave him a kiss and waved to him as he headed inside, then she put the truck in gear again, and drove way. She had to make it to the lawyer’s office before he left to be sure he got his money, and he would just FLIP as bad as she was going to, for what her mother just tried to do.

The building was relatively dark, but for a few upper windows. The elevators were off for the night, so she climbed the six flights to the upper level to get to the office. She’d have to tell Tom about the fire doors not closing right away behind her, maybe the hinges were sticking.

She made her way to the lawyer’s office, to find the door unlocked. Sure enough, Tom Ledger was in his office, hunched over a mountain of paperwork. “I hope you can find your receipt book in all that,” she greeted, plopping down in the chair across from him.

“Aubrey,” he sighed, pushing his glasses up on his nose as he looked at her, “so nice of you to drop in.” He reached into his desk and pulled out a half page book, flipping it open to the next available page. Aubrey handed him a piece of paper, a check made out to the firm for $1500. Tom scrolled out the information on the paper, took the check, and handed her the receipt, signed by him.

“So I’ve now retained your services?” she asked, tucking the paper back in her pocket. Tom nodded yes, as he put the check in an envelope and set it aside. “Good. I just found out that my mother tried to get a passport for my son to take him out of the country. She failed, so she and my father left without him, leaving him at home for two days with the house staff. The latter part I’m not concerned of, I’d trust my son with Martha any time, hell she practically raised me. But my mother neither asked me, nor told me of her plans to take MY son out of the country. When we get to court, ask her that will you? I’ve a feeling she wont see me before then.”

Tom jotted down the information, and set it aside. “Is that all?” he asked, as though he had far better things to do.

“Well geeze, I hope you work as hard for me as you do those files on your desk,” she stated. Tom tossed his pen down. “Don’t worry, I’m done. I’ll see you tomorrow in court. And you better do a dam sight better job than you’re doing now.”

“Aubrey, there isn’t much I can do about your parents past actions now, especially sense they’re still out of the country.”

Aubrey shot him a look. “Who said they’re still out of the country?” she asked. Tom suddenly looked very uncomfortable. “You knew?” The older man sat forward, raising his hand to wave her to calmness, but he didn’t get a word out before she spoke further. “You son of a bitch! YOU KNEW!!! WHY THE FUCK DIDN’T YOU TELL ME!!!!”

“Would you have honestly said yes?” he asked.

“NO! IT’S IN THE MIDDLE OF THE SCHOOL YEAR!!!”

“Precisely. Your mother wanted to give her grandson a bit of a broader education. Much like she did with you and your brothers while you were growing up. Is that so bad?”

“My mother’s idea of broadening the education of her kids was sending them to camp in Wisconsin for a summer! She didn’t even like to fly! What changed her mind?!”

“Aubrey, be reasonable…”

“TOM!!! SHE TRIED TO TAKE MY SON OUT OF THE COUNTRY!!! WHAT WAS SHE GOING TO DO WHILE HE WAS THERE!? LEAVE HIM? SELL HIM!!!? I WON’T TAKE THAT CHANCE!!!”

“Your mother – ”

“SHUT THE FUCK UP!!!” she shouted, standing up, pushing several files off the desktop. “YOU HEAR ME, AND HEAR ME GOOD, YOU FUCK UP. YOU HAVE NO FURTHER CASUAL CONVERSATIONS WITH MY MOTHER! YOU WANT TO TALK TO HER, YOU LET ME KNOW! YOU ARE MY LAWYER!! NOT HER’S!!! YOU FUCK UP LIKE THAT AGAIN, AND I’LL BRING YOU UP BEFORE THE BAR ASSOCIATION FOR BREACH OF CONTRACT, AND CONFLICT OF INTEREST! DO YOU UNDERSTAND ME!!!!!?”

“No need to shout, Aubrey.”

“OBVIOUSLY THERE IS!! BECAUSE THAT ISN’T WHAT I ASKED YOU! TRY AGAIN!”

“Yes! Aubrey, I understand! There’s no need for threats!”

“You screw up again, and it will be more than a threat!” And she left, leaving Tom with his own thoughts.

“How can he do that?” she muttered to herself, not really watching where she was going as she left the building. “How can he discuss something like that with her without my permission? How could – ” she stumbled back form hitting something solid, but as hands came around her shoulders to steady her, she looked over to what she’d run into. “Oh no. Not you again.”

“Fancy meeting you here,” the gruff looking older man stated, a hint of a smile beneath his graying red moustache.

“Fancy not, Ranger Walker,” she replied.

“What are you doing here?” Walker asked.

“None of your business, it was personal.”

“Sorry,” stated Walker’s annoying partner as he came up to join him. “Come on Walker, he’s waiting.

“You get the elevator Trivet, I’ll be right with you.”

“Hey, don’t stick around on my account,” Aubrey stated. “But I promise you that you’ll be in for a climb. The elevators are off line.”

“Hey, I’m just looking to see if you’re ok. I mean, you are my paper carrier.”

“Unfortunately.”

“Just wondered if you needed my truck again in the morning. I’d hate to come out and have to tow your truck away as it blocks mine.”

Aubrey smiled. “Funny, a comedian as well as a cop.”

“Ranger,” he corrected.

“Whatever. It should all be good. I think it’ll hold for another day. As long as it will get me through the next few weeks, it’ll be fine. After that, it can blow up all it likes.”

“Don’t say that, it just might,” he laughed. “Look, if you do run into trouble, and you can’t get help. Give me a call,” the Ranger handed her his business card, “I’d be happy to help. My home number is on the back. I figure its safe to give that to you.”

“I have it anyway. It’s on my master list. You really want to help though?”

“Sure. What did you have in mind?”

“I’ve gotten no where with the police, so maybe you’ll do a better job. I married Michael Feathers, Eagle Feathers’ son.”

“I’d heard he got married, but that was years ago.”

“True. And at the time that we married, both my parents, and Michael’s, refused to acknowledge our existence, and they even returned Sam’s birth announcements we sent them, marked return to sender by the post office, not even opened.”

“Ok.”

“Michael was killed in a car crash, just about a year ago.”

“I’m sorry to hear that. Do you want me to investigate the crash?”

“No. That was settled. Drunk driver. What I want to know, is why my parents, and Michael’s father, have suddenly filed for full custody of my son.”

“What?”

“You heard me. A few months ago, I got word from my mother that she wanted visitation rights with Sam. So did Eagle Feathers. I didn’t want to alienate my son from his father’s culture, nor did I want him never to know his other grandparents, so through lawyer agreements, a visitation schedule was set up. The next day, I get served with papers from two lawyers, both sides wanting full custody of Sam. I work nights, I can’t leave a seven year old at home alone over night. My mother would just love that. thing is, when Sam and I get together after his visits, he tells me he doesn’t want to go back, that his grandmother doesn’t spend time with him as she’d promised. I know they’re after something, or just wanting to make my life a living hell by using my son. I’ve had enough. And I want answers. Can you look into that?”

“Well…I can try. I’m not sure what to look for…”

“Figures…”

“Now hang on. I’ll do what I can, and I promise, I will tell you what I find.”

“Thanks. As long as there is an honest effort, then fine.”

“Walker?” The two looked over to the dark skinned partner to the Ranger, holding open one of the elevator doors with a security guard inside the car. “He’s waiting.”

“I gotta go. I’ll catch up with you when you come by in the mornings.”

“Ok. See ya.”

The Ra’Ger was there again. Was this male following her? If he was, he wasn’t doing a very good job of it. But then, what he observed of the courting Ooman males, the darkening hours of the day were often the most active with mating overtures. Perhaps this male was doing the same thing…with Aubrey. He had to step up the stakes a bit.

An assignment given to the Ra’Ger, Aubrey left. He climbed into the back of her vehicle, and she piloted the vehicle home. He followed closely to her inside, and at once his senses were assaulted by a strange male scent, coming in through the half open vents of his mask.

Aubrey seemed oblivious to the smell, and headed upstairs. Kal watched her through the walls and floor, safely to her bed, without anyone else there but her. He then started looking around the house. There was no one in the main part of the house, nor in the vehicle storage area. He checked the lower rooms, but there was nothing there – literally nothing…

He followed the strongest scent of the unseen male, only to find it did go up to the second level. He sprinted the stairs, regretting the creaking of the old wood beneath his bounding weight. He quickly stood still, as Aubrey burst from her room with a sweeping stick, brandishing it to strike whoever was intruding on her home. But as she found no one there, she returned to her room, leaving the door ajar just a bit.

Again he searched the remaining rooms on the upper level, taking special note of all the places that a male could hide in the boy’s room. Satisfied at last that the dwelling was safe, Kal slipped into Aubrey’s room. But as he gently returned the door to its semi closed state in the dark, that strange male’s scent came through his vents, stronger than ever. He quickly checked on Aubrey, noting her state of restful sleep, then quietly began to search her room.

The closet was empty, not even hanging clothes to hide behind. He checked the space behind the boxes on the floor, it may have been small, but a Kainde Amedha drone could slip through a hole barely big enough for a small Ooman to ass. If an Ooman were just as determined, they could hide anywhere.

He moved some clothing, noting how warm some were. Scenting them carefully he found them to be the ones the female had just removed. The space was clear, and he moved across the room to where the lav was. A few towels and female cleansing products were all that greeted him, even the shower and bath space was clear.

Whoever the male was, he was gone before they arrived, but not too long ago for his scent to dissipate. He’d have to keep an eye out for him, figure out what he wanted. If he wanted Aubrey, well…he’d just have to dissuade him.

Aubrey, smiled gently in her sleep, and Kal realized, he’d been purring. With gentle hands he pulled her covers back just a bit, and softly stroked her hair and back, sending gentle waves of reassurance into her body. She turned over onto her back, her position putting her breasts beneath his fingers. His purrs deepened as his hands gently stroked her firm mounds through the fabric of her sleeping shirt. He’d make sure she was never cold again to have to wear clothing to bed.

Shifting position slightly, he leaned over and scented along her neck and down the middle of her chest, careful not to let the cool metal of his mask to touch her skin. She smelled wonderful, rich female scent came to his senses, adult, ready, but tinged with the spice of something alien. He liked it, he liked it very much.

The familiar sound of snapping branches reached his hunter’s ears, and he quickly shifted the vision of his mask to see through the wall and floor. Someone was climbing the evergreen tree in the front of the house, the top of which was just passing the roof of the house. E hissed quietly, before slipping out the window in the lav. He’d have a chance to hunt after all. He’d marked the grounds outside as his territory, any trespassers would be dealt with accordingly.

Outside he found the intruder jogging down the lane, getting into one f the vehicles that waited there. He scented the air, it was the male that had been in Aubrey’s home, and another scent came to him, a scent he’d only uncounted the previous night.

Safe in the car, the younger man handed the driver the digital camera. “Fuck that was close!” he stated.

“I warned you to move fast,” the driver said curtly, scrolling through the camera’s images. “When she gets home, I figure she’d go straight to bed.”

“Yeah. I got a couple of nice ones of her getting ready,” the man laughed. “For a bitch with a kid, she looks good enough to fuck…Shit she’s fine!”

“Watch it!” the driver warned, handing the man an envelope. “Our business is done. Now fuck off!”

“Ok, ok. Geeze, don’t get all bent out of shape.” He took the envelope and left. As he watched the car pull away, he headed back down the street. He knew where the emergency key was, it would be nothing to get back in the house. And with Aubrey so tired, she wouldn’t put up much of a fight. As he reached for the plant pot be the front door, he heard a low growl from the bushes. Carefully he pulled his small hand gun from his pant leg and aimed it at the shrubs.

“Come on Fido, just show me your fuckin’ nose,” he whispered.

He eyes bulged in shock as something huge and distorted grabbed his outstretched hand. He tried to pull the trigger, but as several bones began to snap, he could do little but scream. Or at least try. A hard surface sealed over his nose and mouth, keeping all sound silent. As quickly as the attack began, it ended, as the intruding man sailed up over the roof to the house, the night itself the only witness to the end of the would be attacker. Brought to his end, by the angel that guarded the woman he’d sought to ruin.

The next day was much like the last. Aubrey woke early, got in her rickety old vehicle and drove to the distant refueling station. There she was given the stacks of bundles, which she broke down to individual pieces, and tossed from her moving vehicle to the different dwellings along her route. Kal was beginning to enjoy the ride in the back of the old clunker, as one of the other delivery person’s had called her vehicle in passing. He began to remember the different turns she would take, and balanced himself in the back accordingly, hanging onto the roof of the cab so he wouldn’t fly out on some of her near G-force turns she’d make. The small leaps she’d make over dirt hills was very much enjoyable, and with the noise of the wind coming in her window, he found he could laugh without being noticed. Oddly enough, there were no small vehicles waiting to attack, as they had in the past, and Aubrey finished her run in record time. Because it was so cold, and there was no water running from the pipes from the fields, Aubrey returned home to shower and change. Then she hurried off to an eating establishment, bought some food, and headed to the dwelling where she’d left her son the night before.

Sam bounded form the building with great energy, carrying his bag of books, some clothes, and a satchel of food himself. Kal purred to him, and he smiled, before opening the door and climbing in next to his mother. Aubrey waved to the woman at the door, making sure she saw her mobile communications device, then drove away. The stopped at a park, and took a walk, as Sam went over some of his book’s pages as they ate their food while walking. They stopped at a monument, and read the plaque there, before moving on again. A while later they arrived at a huge building, with many shelves of books upon books. They went in, and took a seat at one of the tables, while Sam went over some of the information in the book he carried, Aubrey went to the shelves and pulled out other books. Some she laid down for Sam to look through, others she kept and look through herself.

Kal stayed close to the inside wall of glass as this all went on, knowing that if Sam needed to learn these things, he would have to rely on Aubrey to help him. After a time, Aubrey stood, mentioning to Sam that they would have to leave if they were to make it to court on time. Curious what this ‘Court’ thing was, Kal made sure the way was clear to the exit for them, by making books fall in the paths of those who would get in their way, and climbed in the back of the truck as the two got in.

“I’m glad that Gram and Gramps got delayed this morning,” Sam was saying as Aubrey pulled the truck into a large parking structure. “Gave me a chance to spend more time with you.”

“Well I’m glad you enjoyed yourself.”

“I did. They would never think to take me to the park before the library for my history paper. How did you know to go there?”

Aubrey smiled. “Your uncle, my mother’s brother, took me there when I was your age, and had the same assignment. I aced it.”

“WOW! How come I never met him?”

“He died long before your dad and me. An accident on your grand-pa’s construction site. It really hit him hard. I don’t think grandma ever forgave him.”

“That sucks.”

“Well…”

“SAMUEL!” The two looked up to see an elegantly dressed older woman and a man in a suit come rushing towards them in the hall of the court house. “I was worried sick! Where have you been!”

“With mom, not that you really cared,” Sam replied, receiving a gentle shove on his shoulder from his mother.

“You should have come straight home!” the woman said.

“If you wanted him home mom,” Aubrey stated, holding up her cell phone. “You should have called. Martha had my cell number, as do you. And would you look at that,” Aubrey flipped open the screen, “no messages, no missed calls. You couldn’t have been worried that much. Or is it that you didn’t get back from Germany as early as you’d hoped.”

The woman looked at the man behind her, before pulling the boy to her side. “You should never have taken him without consulting us first. We had plans today.”

“What plans? It’s a school day. You’ve been out of the country so long, you’ve no idea what’s been going on.”

“I DO SO!”

“Really, what happened yesterday? Or the day before? Or the day before that?” Sam smiled at his mother when the woman couldn’t answer. “You didn’t have plans today, nor any other day, they all went up in smoke, when you couldn’t take Sam with you to Germany.”

“Ladies…” Tom stated, coming in behind the young mother. “Lets leave this for the judge to decide shall we. Sam, good to see you.”

“Hi Tom,” greeted the boy. “Put gram and gramps in their places.”

“Samuel!” the woman gasped, as the boy shook her loose and took a seat on the bench behind his mother’s lawyer. “This is all your doing!” she snapped to Aubrey. “I want the best for that boy, and you’re turning him against me.”

“You don’t want him. You never did. Or is your memory fading on you like your hair color?” Aubrey pushed passed the two and took her seat next to her lawyer, making sure Sam had one of his school books to read in case he was sent out of the room.

The judge came in, the people rose as he was introduced, then they all sat. Aubrey sat in her seat with a heavy heart. Apparently, the judge was a close and dear friend to her father. By rights, he should step down from the case, sighting conflict of interest, but during his opening statement, he said that due to the lack of sitting judges available for this kind of case, he had little choice but to take the assignment. Aubrey doubted that. The judge also indicated that his decision over the case would not be influenced in any way by his personal involvement with Aubrey’s father. That said, he called the session to order, and Aubrey’s lawyer stood.

This was going to be a long day.
