Chapter 27 - Bribe
Few slept; there was no where to lie and even if there had been the floor was awash with several inches of water. Several hours after dawn they watched as Oria slowly stirred and attempted to sit up, everyone quickly averted their gazes as she rolled onto her back and pulled herself into a sitting position. She shimmied back to lean against the hull of the ship and let her eyes close with a groan.
“How long was I out for?” She swallowed painfully.
“About twelve hours. It’s dawn.” Anna-Maria winced slightly as she saw the bruise on her temple.
“Ah, great, feeling tons better, now please knock me back out before the man in my head shatters any semblance of sanity I have left.” Gibbs chuckled.
“Ah you got the hammer and anvil man.” She swallowed again and gave a light chuckle before she turned her gaze to him.
“Ah, so you’ve heard of him. Lovely chap isn’t he, does grand shields and horseshoes. Now then can some please tell me, one, where we are, two, what we are doing wherever we are and three, how to get rid of said anvil and hammer man.” Will leaned forwards.
“One, we’re on the Black Pearl… in the brig, two we are currently doing nothing because we are in the brig and three I honestly haven’t got a clue having never had him visit.” Oria chuckled and gazed at him through one half closed eye.
“You’ve not lived then lad. Wonderful answers for one and two, someone please give me a satisfactory answer for three.” Gibbs pushed his way around to face her.
“Usually I find he quietens down with rum but seeing as we don’t have any and he’s not calling because you’ve drunk any I think you’re going to have to sit it out.” She nodded slightly and glanced down her eyes widening slightly as she saw the blood on her shirt. Realisation dawned, “Sara! Where’s Sara?” She sighed with relief as she spotted the sleeping frame of the girl next to her. Slowly she stirred and Oria smiled at her as Sara glanced up bleary eyed. The smile faltered as Oria saw the bruising and cuts on her face and arm. “You all right?” Slowly Sara nodded and sat up rubbing the sleep tenderly from her eyes careful to avoid the bruising on her cheeks. The cuts had already started to heal, they had only been superficial, not intended to scar just to give Oria a heart attack and get her compliance.
Oria glanced around before focusing back on the crew who were all staring at her. They quickly averted their gazes, she frowned.
“Have I missed something?” Gibbs shook his head and she nodded slowly, suspiciously, “Right, well does anyone have a plan for escaping?” Everyone looked at everyone else and there was a mutual shaking of heads. Oria sighed and tugged at the manacles on her wrists, “Ok that’s clearly a no then… does anyone still have a dagger?” Anna-Maria delved into a pocket drawing out a slim blade.
“Here.” She rolled it along the deck and Oria wriggled around to drag it closer to her with the toe of her boot.
“Thank you.” Elizabeth leaned forwards.
“What are you doing?” They watched as Oria spun the blade in her fingers nimbly getting it into position over her right wrist.
“Currently attempting to escape, if your squeamish don’t look. Sara turn away please, I don’t want you to see this.” Sara turned her gaze away swiftly. The rest of the crew frowned in confusion, Elizabeth turned away as Oria pressed the blade down into the skin over her wrist biting her lip tightly as blood began to pool. The blood ran smoothly down her wrist and under the manacle and she began to wriggle her hand about lubricating it as much as the running blood would allow. Slowly she began to tug and twist her wrist through the iron and pulled it free with a wince as it tore into her skin.
Spinning on her knees she turned to face her other wrist and wiped the bloody one over it, she cursed as the wound was already healing. Picking the blade back up she slit her right wrist sharply and waited for enough blood to drain through the manacle before tugging that one free as well. Stumbling up to her feet she regarded the thin red lines that remained.
“Well that was certainly a different way of releasing yourself.” Oria chuckled at Gibbs comment and glanced around for something to use to pick locks rubbing some feeling back into her hands. Picking up a bone she whittled the tip down to a point and approached the crews’ cell, kneeling down she glanced into the lock and began to carve grooves into it. She stood back up and pressed the bone in, it ground and jarred but eventually caught on something and it creaked open. Oria grinned triumphantly and opened the door with a flourish.
“Welcome to the Black Pearl.” She glanced down at the bone sticking out of the lock and tried to tug it free. A crunching set off and she stumbled backwards as the end snapped and her face fell. She glanced back at Will and Elizabeth with an apologetic smile, “How do you feel about staying put while we go up and search for a key and get control of the ship? Not that you really have much choice, I have enough bone for one more cell but not two.” Elizabeth glanced between the two locks.
“Release Will, he can fight, he can help you.” Oria glanced at her.
“You sure you’re happy to stay down here with Sara, locked in a cell?” Elizabeth nodded and smiled at the young girl encouragingly. Sara smiled faintly back her eyes wide at the prospect of Oria leaving her. She wasn’t about to admit that her heart was pounding in her chest and threatening to burst out in front of the crew. She knew she had to be strong now.
“Probably the safest place to be.” Elizabeth whispered, Oria shrugged and began to whittle away at the bone again, she knelt and studied the lock before pushing the bone in, it jammed and jarred again several times before eventually finding purchase and the lock clipped free. Will pushed the door open and everyone watched as the sudden movement sent the bone rattling down over the wood, it snapped in half. They paused and listened for footsteps, none came and they gave a mutual sigh of relief, Oria pushed her way to where Sara was sat and she knelt in front of her with a gentle smile.
