bad frogs

There was a frog in the bottle!” Elizabeth exclaimed with more of a slur than Norrington would have imagined her two glasses of wine portended for her. He stood up and the world began to swim about his head, pushing back his chair he stumbled around the table clutching Sparrow’s chair and in turn the door, he collapsed laughing into Lt. Gillette’s arms. “Where did you come from?” Norrington asked smiling while looking up at his friend, oh he glowed too.

“Did you drink the wine? Did you drink the wine?!” Gillette seemed frantic, but James could not help himself but stare at the incredible aquamarine of Gillette’s eyes, he felt as if every nerve in his body was standing on end and Gillette’s hold on his shoulders was both excruciatingly painful and erotically shocking.

“Yes” James was laughing but he didn’t know why, Elizabeth’s giggle echoed his from a few feet away, tripped by her skirts she was inching her way towards the men on her belly. James turned watching her dazzled by her laughing smile. His laughter escalated to hysteria.

Gillette looked to the two marines accompanying him, he pulled his arm back and slapped James across the face. The pain felt like fire and ice- his laughter stopped in shock and James realized listened to the sound of the boat creak, the sails flap, the waves lap, there was no carousing noises coming from the rafted pirate ship, there was no noise from them at all. Captain Jack Sparrow emerged clutching his bottle of rum. Elizabeth was still laughing, a chilling unsettling laugh, more like crying because she couldn’t stop and it took the cadence of sobs. James knew it was wrong but he hated the idea of her in pain of any kind, wanted to make it go away, so damn propriety, he slid out of Gillette’s arms gathered her in his arms and held her shaking frame as she laughed without joy in her eyes. He leaned back against the ships clammy wood and tried to calm the carnivale in his head. He was now aware as Elizabeth clung to him tightly that something was very wrong.

“Sparrow did you do it!?” Gillette demanded, “why did you poison your own crew?” Jack Sparrow was at the end of a very sharp sword.

“I can’t crew the Pearl alone, savvy?” Jack had no trace of merriment either.

“Take them back to our ship.” Gillette commanded the marines at the point of a sword. One stooped to pick up Elizabeth and James, but James protested. “No, I need to know what is going on,” his vision blurred momentarily, but the feeling of euphoria was receding, vague memories of an unsettling manner of relating to Miss Swan were coming back to him, he hoped they were hallucinations, he hoped that they were not. “Gillette, walk with me.” Through only supreme effort James rose to his feet and walked towards Gillette. He stumbled and leaned heavily upon him “You are my oldest dearest friend, please do not keep anything from me, and support me. I would not have my men know that I am as weak as I am now.” Gillette put one arm round his commodore, his friend, the man he loved, and aided him to cross the pirate ship to the HMS Skirmish.
