White and Black Pearls - Chapter 5

Chapter Five

“So wait,” Will interrupted impatiently. “If Jack was alone on the deck of the Wicked Wench, how do you know this part of the story? Wouldn’t Jack have to tell that part of it himself?” He sincerely doubted that any tale this grandiose coming from Jack could possibly be true.

Bootstrap shrugged. “You’re never alone on a ship at sea,” he muttered. “Somebody has to man the helm, somebody has to sleep in the crow’s nest… I don’t know who originally told those parts of the story; I just know what I’ve heard. Whichever parts you wish to believe are entirely up to you.”

The Flying Dutchman’s captain sat back then and seemed to accept that answer. “Do you really think that Jack’s life has been so outlandishly filled with luck and chance that his first kiss came from a goddess?” he asked of his father.

Another shrug was the best answer to that Bootstrap could give to that question. “In the time I spent serving under Jack on the Black Pearl I think anything could have happened and if it was strange and impossible, it would have happened to Jack.”

That was true. Will stroked his thumb along the hair at his chin and frowned. He’d heard the man say more than once that his one and only love was the sea, so at very least this Celestiana being was no longer a part of Jack’s life, he decided. That was in itself a small blessing – if she did show up on the Dutchman tonight or any other night, he could at least rest assured that he wouldn’t be sucked into any sort of situation that closely focused upon Captain Jack Sparrow.

“Shall I go on?” Bill inquired when he saw his son so deep in thought.

Will nodded, though his gaze lifted up to the skies once more. The stars were still falling, one or two with every passing minute, and hadn’t stopped. It was a disturbing show to watch; seeing one or two shooting stars was considered lucky, but seeing what was at least seventy fall so far disturbed him on some levels. He had no fancies about the world ending but surely that many stars pitching themselves to their deaths out of the sky couldn’t be good for somebody or something somewhere.
